Geelong are a fairly poor side too tbh. If the too old too slow thing wasn't true before it sure is now. Fact is Power beat one top 4 team ALL YEAR. And that was us, by two points, while we were playing literally our worst footy for the year. That's not a flag team. Hinkley knew it too which is why he dropped a man behind as cover but basically left Bailey Smith to do what he wanted and gave us an extra in the middle. That's desperation stuff.
@PremIndi
@PremIndi 2 года назад
Port have a great team with a lot of youth and will continue to challenge. They have what it takes to go to the next level. But...Melbourne and Dogs are going into a GF and neither have a player over 200 games. That's scary. The Dogs and Demons may well own footy for the next five years.
@tweegeTX3
@tweegeTX3 2 года назад
@@PremIndi I agree with most of your points generally, but you’ve majorly exaggerated them for effect. I wouldn’t say a “fairly poor side” would make a prelim at all, ask everyone they beat to get there. And regular season games determine the finals structure, relying on “you didn’t win, we just lost” logic doesn’t cut it, Port beat you fair and square against their own challenges, then on Saturday, Bulldogs blew Port off the park completely. Congrats on the win but don’t pretend you called it - you didn’t. Remember you also thought Geelong would beat Port - they didn’t. It’s easy after the fact to say ‘see, told you so’, but you know full well you didn’t see the margin being what it was.
@PremIndi
@PremIndi 2 года назад
@@tweegeTX3 so I'll clarify a little. When I say a fairly poor side I'm going by their record. They had a very good regular season record, had a good draw, and played some good footy, including against top sides. Only September matters. They got smashed by Port, beat an also ran that was literally running on fumes, then got embarrassed by Melbourne. Not the stuff of great teams. May go down as one of the worst finals performers ever, under Scott. I wasn't taking anything away from Port's win, it was not a 'we lost it', it was a great win. I was referring to Port's record against the top four, and in that respect I was bang on. They beat one top four team, just, when that team was undeniably in the biggest form slump of any top four team this year - they even missed the four as a result. How do you know I thought Geelong would beat Port? Definitely wasn't meant to be an I told you so. I had the Dogs by 2-3 goals but certainly not pretending I called this. I actually had Port by 28 when Keath went down. I changed my tip when the government banned Dogs from training. A confident team would've been outspoken about wanting to beat the very best version of their opposition. Would be louder than even the other team about it. Port's silence was exactly what the Dogs wanted. Even if only thru inaction, Port literally have the Dogs the thing they want most - to feel up against the wall, outsiders, underdogs. My comment to my mates when I changed my tip? 'This just has the feeling of another Hinkley own goal'. Now I definitely called that ☺️
@sarcasticgenius8563
@sarcasticgenius8563 2 года назад
It wasn't really a shock. The Doggies are a lot better than what their ladder position indicated (they lost a few late season games that they shouldn't have) and Port had a pretty horrid record against top 8 sides this season. Tell the tale any way you want but the teams who made the GF are undoubtedly the two best teams, and were for most of the year. Their prelim dominance is a reminder of that fact.

Hate the perception that making a prelim is accomplishment enough from TJ there. The club feeds us the “we exist to win premierships” line every year, if we are going to say that then we can’t go patting ourselves on the back now because we made two prelims in a row - serious ramifications need to happen if supporters are to keep taking that line seriously
@Trinsicity
@Trinsicity 2 года назад
Making a prelim is a pretty good accomplishment though. Given only 4 of 18 teams do it each year, it puts your team in the top quartile. Not to mention most players play their entire careers and never make it to a prelim. But to do it two years in a row? You're looking at a statistical probability of 4.88% which is definitely nothing to scoff at. If every club had the mentality of "premiership or failure" then they'd be sacking 17 coaches at the end of every season. Sure, winning the ultimate glory is everyone's goal, but when it's a zero sum game and there can only be one winner, you have to cut teams some slack for doing well enough to make the top eight on a semi regular basis.

What a difference fielding a competent ruckman makes. Martin did not win the day, but he did enough and was valuable. Imagine how strong the dogs would be with a Naitanui or Gawn. A lot of the credit must go to Beveridge. Motivating a team is a gift few coaches have.

I think the problem at Port isn't Hinkley, it's the board. Signing him on for another two years in January was a shocking call - even amateur clubs wouldn't do that! Should have told him to wait until the season was over before they renegotiated his contract. It's a coach's job to make sure his team is hungry and switched on before the game and it's clear that they weren't. They showed up for about 10 mins or so in the third quarter and then they were snuffed out for good. Anyone with any clear sense of the game knew it was over at half time. The club needs to make some tough calls in the next two months with Hinkley and some of their older players but I can't see it happening because the board isn't professional enough.
@darrenmiles-morland8038
@darrenmiles-morland8038 2 года назад
Geelong has got exactly the same problem. In mid 2018 before that season had gotten close to being over they signed on Chris Scott until the end of 2022. Look at the damage that this has caused. Even though Scott has continued to produce excellent home and away results that have seen his team finish inside the top 4 with the double chance every season since, come finals' time his outdated coaching methods have been brutally exposed by opposition teams because of a mentally fragile playing group that cannot handle the heat of finals' pressure, and who in my opinion no longer look interested in playing for him. But Chris Scott will ruin that club for years, not only because his methods of coaching couldn't produce a premiership but because the man is too stubborn to realise that his time is now up. He will remain as coach at least until his contract expires because he is too proud to step aside and put the best interests of the Geelong Football Club first and his wants and wishes to coach them to another premiership (which he doesn't look capable of doing anyway) second. Geelong could be spending many years in the football wilderness as a result of this as they undergo a complete and total rebuild.

@@darrenmiles-morland8038 Fair call. I think in last years GF, Scott made a huge blunder keeping Ablett Jnr on the park. I get it that you patch em up and see how they go but it was obvious during the 2nd qrt that Ablett could only use one arm. The Tiges were already a man down and he should have pulled the plug on Ablett. The fact he didn't says to me he can't make the really tough calls that need to be made at the highest level. There are 2 main things with Port 1. And it’s fixable, but can Hinkley, the answer is no, it’s too late but read on. We often heard Hinkley’s “ mantra “ we play our game” he would say that quite frequently. It was a welded on philosophy, but he became a captive of it. You only had to look at the coach’s box, he even seemed ‘frozen’ after the bulldogs had only kicked 2 goals. It means that Hinkley sort of trusted the players to come back to “ our game” . But they didn’t, and it demonstrates that he was not a flexible coach, he probably got fed with the stats of the asset coaches, which put you into a drug induced state of “ I’m in control”. But the stats are very raw, they just don’t matter a lot in the sense that there are some very poor things when you look at video footage as Lloyd and Brown do brilliantly. So it seems has hie eye on the wrong things. .. You know , you saw player McKenzie strolling back with his back to the play, another Bulldog onslaught. But your mind keeps telling you Hinkley is mainly still locked in, in fact mesmerised by his “ mantra”. So wile he can hit the reset button, can he or will he. He needs to consult trusted Port smarts to get him to see this. But Yiu’d have to think, that his destiny, is now much more going against him, no flag in a year with home finals, but a massacre. It does take the stuffing out of coaches, a lot. Buckley was absolutely a wreck I’d say after losing the very winnable GF against West Coast in 2018. In fact, he went on, but things began to slide , they do, they just do. And his personal life deteriorated at home, no doubt due to the hard work and failure, the massive work done for nought. Look at a Goodwin and Hardwick.. it tells you it’s hard to get things right. No criticism here, just demonstration that it’s so hard to get things right. Buckley in particular, no premierships as a player, yet would have had three at the Lions and maybe even another two because if he was there, aside from other mids, Brizzy would have had the best 2 mids ever . Voss the best AFL player to have played the game, and Buckley with him at centre bounces, galactical. So he would still rue not staying with the Lions, big time. No premierships as a coach. Hinkley’s time in hindsight has really passed him. Just one example - age of their two key players. Boak and Gray both 33 years old. 2. Port don’t have a match winner, a game breaker, a top shelf player. Dixon is 29, so the graph is treading brown. I feel for Boak.,

They say successful campaigns are built on the hardwork put in in preseason, we are just seeing it playing out. The Bulldogs are a real chance to be flogged in the GF next week.

Maybe I’m wrong - but from the start Ports tactics where not working - for the whole game it was kick it either square or forward and hope for the best - where was the run and carry that Port can play so well ??? - surely this is where the coaches earn the big salaries - the ability to read a game and change your tactics if they are not working is the sign of a great coach - this change in tactics was totally lacking -from start to painful finish it was the same crap

After surgery and months of rehabilitation, to have the expectation he will return to his best football straight away is where you went wrong Kane. Get behind the bloke and show a bit of support of how well he has been going after such an ordeal which is exactly what Luke Beveridge and all of the Bulldogs' supporters have been doing. You're just another journalist bringing others down for no good reason but to stir the pot. Comments like yours are enough to affect young players' performance and confidence. The Cats have to be included in that discussion too. Their record since the 2011 premiership stands at 2 Elimination Final defeats from as many appearances, 1 Grand Final defeat from as many appearances, 6 out of 7 Qualifying Final defeats, and 5 out of 6 Preliminary Final defeats. All under Chris Scott's outdated coaching style. For some reason however Geelong does manage to show up for Semi Final week, winning 5 out of 6 Semi Finals after losing the Qualifying Final the week beforehand.

It is Mark William who has the "we exist to win premierships" approach, and the very side who now rates this approach as the changing factor in their own rise to power is playing the dogs in the grand final this week. Williams has instilled this same mentality into the Dees and if they win the granny they will largely have Williams and this attitude to thank for giving them the edge. Port Adelaide is the most successful club in the world in terms of winning flags and the Williams family have won as players and coaches more flags than any family in the world. If anyone can say this Port Adelaide can that's part of the reason it feels so good when they get flogged.

I have hated Port Adelaide from the first time i went to Alberton Oval 54 years ago so was pleased to see bulldogs whip their arse but to say they choked last year against arguably the best team in this millennium by 6 points is just stupid. Stick to facts and engage brain. Last time they were accused of choking the mofos won the flag the next year so encouragement is not helpful in case they repeat history and equal Crows 2 flags to one lead.
