10:26 the way the drop off lane works is A. It double drop off lanes next to each other like most airports B. It’s separate from arriving passengers C. It’s separate from busses Ubers etc D. They will probably enforce no standing meaning you drop of you leave no waiting

Hey just a note for you- this is not a new airport. This is a new terminal. All the runways and most taxiways are the same. The garage at terminal B holds 3180 vehicles, the garage at terminal C holds 4350. Circle parking (between the old terminals) holds 895. So there’s really going to be less up close parking. Also, a tram and a bus are two very different things. 😂

You drop people off on the upper roadway section and you'll pick people up on the lower roadway section. As you enter the terminal, the departures sign has you drive on the upper section and the arrivals sign points you toward the lower section. That way people aren't trying to drop off and pick up passengers in the same area. This is how it is at most modern airports, Indianapolis being one example.

Something interesting I found out from watching another video on the new terminal is that there is going to be a flower garden sitting area outside the lower level of the new terminal/baggage claim area, which will have a layout as a tribute to the original KCI. The benches are circular and look like the original A, B, and C terminals, and there will be a fountain shaped like the original "monolith" style air-traffic control tower KCI had up through the 1980s/early 1990s.

Looks good, but there is really an AC or ventilation issue. My gate was at the very end on delta’s side and when everyone was gathered around it smelled and felt humid/hot. I had to sit like 3 gates down where there was less people. Plus, all the walls are glass, which makes the sunlight worsen things on top of that. Ive never had that issue, even in atlanta where its the same thing but even more people.

In this terminal's design, not sure how this can be considered "a great place to hang out". In your comment, you would go several hours in advance to check out the terminal (LAX, I believe). From what I have seen so far (via RU-vid, not in person), you would be able to go to the "Check-in" hall and... that's it. Every amenity is inside of the secure area. Only a single Dunkin Donuts in available outside the security area. Also, unless they are planning to bring in seating that was not available at the time of the "sneak-peaks", there is literally no seating outside the secure area. If I come to meet someone flying in or I arrive early enough to get bags checked and have time to relax with my loved one, where exactly am I to wait. I feel that this was incredibly short-sighted of the designers and airport authority. With the "horseshoe terminals, at least there were amenities where non-travelers could wait with their friends/family prior to going through security. Poor planning.
@fountaincity
@fountaincity Год назад
Well, LAX was almost the same way. Many of the amenities were past security, and it was still a fun place to be. Yes, LAX has a bigger “check-in hall,” but all the shopping and restaurants were past security. What I would do coming early is to hang out/people watch in the upper check in hall, and then when the time comes, head downstairs to do my pickup. Thanks for your feedback!
@EricDDeyo
@EricDDeyo Год назад
@Fountain City Kansas City But that's my point: where are going to people watch from? I have seen no seating in the Check-in Hall. If you are seeing someone off and it's still several hours before flight departure, there are no amenities to spend time (or money?) at to pass time and, again, no seating. I've flown into and out of San Diego dozens of times and there are many shops, food options as well as seating available outside the secure area. I would argue that, while marginally better than the horseshoe terminals, they swung and missed in comparison to other airports.
@fountaincity
@fountaincity Год назад
@@EricDDeyo I usually don’t spend money at airports unless I’m traveling, so that’s not the biggest deal to me. I didn’t notice the lack of sitting space, admittedly I wasn’t looking for that! I would think it would be an easy addition for some benches or seats there. I didn’t mention this in the video, but traveling through the airport when you do fly will be so much better-then you will have all the amenities after TSA.

I am an Architect and was even on one of the three original bidding teams that were chasing the New Terminal design all those years ago. We did not win, but as a long-time resident of Kansas City, I continued to participate in the citizen outreach events and design review over the following year in the early stages of the work. The lack of most amenities forward of security was there from the start and several people (including me) pointed this fault out. What I pointed out many times, to the actual team members of the design group, was that not only did they have next to no seating and food options, they also had a small toilet footprint and no capacity to handle early arriving persons - especially for groups needing to leave together, i.e. sport teams, band groups, school programs,etc. The best example of this, that I witnessed at Terminal C (international) was a school group congregated in the narrow concourse prior to their group departing. This appeared to be for a foreign exchange program and they wanted to make a head-check of the students and meet with their chaperones prior to going though security. Some of the students and their parents had arrived hours earlier. Luckily there were food options, services, and such all along the ring of Terminal C. Now imagine a similar thing happening at the New Terminal. It would be a very bad experience. A few dozen students and their family having to sit in the sparse lobby (Ticket Hall) with only Dunken Donuts to eat and about 4 fixtures in the only available toilets. Since only ticket holders can make it past security, everyone is stuck in that one Ticket Hall. Not that great a place to see off a loved one. Too bad that weak aspect remained all the way through the design. There are a few minor items that did show up that I distinctly put into the suggestion box and that I shared one-on-one with a planner - it is cool to see they made it into the plans.
@nonstar8182

The big question is how many passengers are going to being doing layovers in Kansas City. They will need quite a few for those businesses to survive. Of course, the old airport was going to be a great hub as well right in the middle of the country. Here we go again.
@fountaincity
@fountaincity Год назад

@markb3806
@markb3806 Год назад
The old terminal's inflexible design pretty much eliminated Kansas City as a place for connecting flights. It became a positive feedback loop that made KCI much less effective than it could have been (especially given its central location): no connecting flights, no layovers, no need for services behind security, even fewer connecting flights because the terminal lacked services and on and on. That won't be a problem with the new terminal especially in an era where airlines are starting to depart from strict hub and spoke systems.
