Enjoy this full show by old era Kansas! I've digitally enhanced both sound and image (in 16:9) to make this 30 year old gem shine again. In 1981 Kansas was the top grossing live act worldwide and this recording from the following year clearly shows the reasons for that: unsurpassed individual musical skills and impeccably tight playing as a collective. Live the band sounded even better than on their studio albums. I mean, just compare the album version of a song like Crossfire to what you hear here... This is the original line-up minus Steve Walsh, who had left a few months before and had been replaced by John Elefante. Also helping out during the Vinyl Confessions live shows was Warren Ham, formerly of Bloodrock. He would later be asked to join Toto but went on and joined Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope instead to form the band AD. Interestingly enough, after Kansas' initial demise in 1984 John Elefante was also asked to join Toto as their new lead singer, but he declined as well.

Robby Steinhardt, the violinist and singer on this video died on July 17, 2021. Robby was the standard bearer for mixing classical violin with blues based rock & roll. He was also a friendly person to fans. Robby will be missed tremendously.

@@MrGarymola Complications from Pancreatitis. The violent word was a computer spell change. Robbie is the best violinist ever! Some parts of songs are so intense they are sweet and are so dear to my heart and some parts are so complex that only Robbie and his years of practice could share his gift with us.

To me it all comes down to preference. I could name several great drummers right off the top of my head and all of them definitely bring something to the table, but when it comes down to it give me Phil Heart all day everyday. He is my favorite and always will be.

HIs posthumous album just came out, they were overwhelmed with a thousand orders so backorder is a few weeks. Crazy good material along with some great musicians in the jazz/classic /prog rock scene. Looking at the list, Robby made a HUGE impact in the industry. Waiting for my order, will be a few weeks. US distribution only due to the demand but sure they'll fix it soon.

I saw them 6 times starting with their first tour after releasing their first album. 1974, South Bend, IN. Mott the Hoople opened and Queen was supposed to follow but their guitar player got sick and a new band was introduced - KANSAS. I fell in love and saw them more often than any other band. Their music from 1974-1990 is my favorite.

I’d like to give a shout out to all the guys but especially Warren Hamm, who sings & plays keys, sax & flute here. He’s been one of my favorite musicians from Ft. Worth. Vinyl Confessions was such an underrated album & so is this fantastic set of musicians! God rest your soul, Robbie. Omaha got a real treat this night!

Glad to see somebody give Warren props. I was/am a big fan of Kerry’s post Kansas band AD - Warren (along with ex Kansas bassist Dave Hope, who KILLS it in this concert!), Michael Gleason and drummer Dennis Holt. Sadly a short-lived collaborative, but still several solid releases. Check them out if you’re unfamiliar with their stuff.

Regardless of the naysayers around here, Elefante's vocal performance here is top-notch. His wardrobe choices and stage presence leave a lot to be desired (as he himself will tell you today), but hey, he was young, and as for the fashion, it was 1982. Do yourself a favor and turn off the monitor and just listen to the audio. It's fantastic.

I remember this show like it was yesterday. Wow! What a treasure to find this on here! One of the best concerts I ever saw, no doubt about it. I was 17...and 32 years later I can still feel the energy that filled the Civic Auditorium that night, it was incredible.

Michael Dean Not as good as Steve, in his prime, but Steve is not as good as Steve in his prime. Once Steve returned, his voice was done. Elefante - as much as I disliked anything new from that lineup - was as good as you can get, if you can't have '70s Steve.

Dave hope and Phil Ehart is a rhythm section that cannot be denied Dave's tone and the syncopation between him and Phil is incredible, with so much else going on with the rest of the musicians not many people realize how good Dave and Phil really are

One of the most underrated bands in music history. These guys were extreme musicians that did some of the most complex things. The problem is that they not only made it look easy, but it sounded easy. To the untrained ear it's just good music, but to any real musician that knows, the complexity is above or at least on par with other progressive bands like Genesis, Yes, etc. who got way more accolades for their work.

This is one of the best live performances of Kansas I guess. The sound is just incredible and I think that John Elefante does a very good replacement job. And the guitars sound exactly as they should. Epic band.

Warren Ham added a lot to this tour. Dude can play about any instrument, and high backing vocals. He could have been a lead singer for them had they not brought in JE. I think they were at the top of their game this tour and all of them gave 150%.

Elefante IS a monster musician and was a perfect fit for Kansas after Walsh left. This remains a favorite of mine 30+ years after watching it on VHS! A real magical set! Livgren, Ehart, Steinhardt, Williams, Hope, Elefante & Ham killin' it and having an absolute ball!...it shows!

Another thing: Stepping into the lead singer's shoes of an national group is not easy (God knows it is not a job I would ever want), BUT, John Elefante does it about as good as it can be done! Kansas is great with Walsh and Kansas is great with Elefante. Have seen Kansas six times with Walsh, Steinhardt, and Williams in the lineup and once with (can't think of his name) who recently replaced Steinhardt. I regret that I did not have any resources in the 82-84 era to see them with Elefante and Livgren. Regardless they have not disappointed each and every time I have seen them. I would like to add that imo the most underrated guitar player is Rich Williams. The guy literally plays perfect.

I have always loved Steve Walsh's voice and consider him one of the best, but I have to give credit to Elephante, the notes that Steve sounds strained on, John hits effortlessly (like the full-voice high note before the violin solo in Dust in the wind;amazing!) John has much the same characteristics of Steve's voice without sounding strident on the high notes. It doesn't surprise me that Toto wanted him; he's got an amazing voice and would've been a good match for Toto.

Steve was never strained, that's just how his voice is. A little raspy that sounds like it's on edge of breaking on some notes but he's not even close.

The band sounds really good and they were having a great time. Steve's presence is missing. He had a lot of soul. Elefante has an alto voice, so he can handle Steve's vocal parts with relative ease. Steve was a tenor who had great range but years of touring takes it toll. Not to mention lifestyle choices. Steve had a grit and stage presence that was all his own. He's also a good keyboard player and could bang the hell out of the bongos! His Jokester side is also missed here. The manic force he performed with. Elefante stays himself, wisely. He does a great job here vocally. True, he does come off as a bit of a pop tart. That said, the guy has a great voice and obviously enjoys being a part of the band. He smiles a lot. He dances around like a mini version of Tom Jones. From what I have read he is a really good and decent guy. The extra player on various instruments gives it all a freshness that is most welcome. Kudos to Kansas for carrying on at this time and playing their asses off. Just like before. Amen!

As excited as I am to hear this concert again, after so many years since, I just want to make a plea to listen to Dave Hopes bass playing during “No one together “ it really stands out how tight of a bass player Dave is…He must’ve lived Kerry’s music, because he really has it down. I saw Kansas in 1979 and they were really good, heavier live than on record. But this is an awesome show too. John Elefante does a superb job and in fact my favorite Kansas song is "Play The Game Tonight," one of his.

It's really interesting to note how much that single resurrected the band on the commercial stage, and was definitely the catalyst for them getting this spot on national TV - something that I just didn't see happening back in the Monolith or Audiovisions days. However, Play the Game Tonight was penned by an outside writer, and was originally called "Stay with me tonight". Elephante and Livgren changed the verse, and hence, the title, to "Play the Game Tonight", and rewrote much of the verses (source: Seeds of Change autobiography)

Ya know, once in a great while, the stars will line up just right. Not only did we get one of the best bands in the world to enjoy, we got TWO of the best singers to ever walk the earth! I love both Steve Walsh and John Elefante. These two singers just add to Kansas's greatness.

It is astounding to me how good the songs from Vinyl Confessions sound in this performance, in particular Right Away, Face It, Windows, and Crossfire. Obviously I would prefer a Kansas with Steve Walsh, but Elefante was a fantastic replacement.

The funny thing is John stepped and did a great job, but the more talented singer is the unspoken Warren Ham. They brought him on this tour. He played sax and flute and a variety of other instruments. He had an incredible voice. Probably a bit more soulful than a Walsh replacement needed. Check him out on some of Kerry's work with A.D.

Don Smith, I thoroughly agree. Warren is another greatly underrated musician but then again, most studio quality musicians rarely get the limelight. I loved him in AD!! The thing with John E. too, is that he started out playing drums with the band he was in with his brother, Dino. I was surprised to see that in this video, he's playing keyboards & a little guitar. Very talented man. However, the outfit is really cheesy! I guess I just forgot how we dressed back then!

I have to say that John Elephante is one of my favorite singers of all time (along with Steve Perry). He fit in with Kansas very well! Didn't even know he was in Kansas until seeing this video. Turns out he was an original with them. I have listened to "Windows" over and over and still not tired of it!

I saw them shortly before this on the Audio Visions tour and Steve Walsh along with the band put on the most masterful performance I have ever seen. That being said, I love Elefante's contribution to Kansas along with his scorching yet clear voice. He was brought in to fill some of the biggest vocal shoes around and did so in a most admirable fashion. This performance is typical Kansas perfection and it has to be noted that speaking as a disciple of Geddy Lee, Dave Hope is ripping a new ass on that Steinberger.

Awesome talent with REALLY well written music. I love the way they didn't just "do the hits" and stayed deep in their catalog. I get so tired of bands that just do greatest hits concerts, when most of the real gems never got airplay.

Regardless of what Gen Z or Gen Alpha think. The music their generation is producing does not even come close. The music industry in general has gone downhill since the early 90s. The music Kansas and other similar prog rock band produced was miles ahead of the garbage being produced today. This concert was recorded live, a testament to the musicianship of Kansas' band members.

Thank you very much for posting that awesome concert. I loved that era of music and performance. I feel like that early 80s time was the peak for so many bands. Muscianship and performance meant more than just blinding LED screens behind the performers like suffices so often today. Kansas was at their peak in my opinion. Like many fans, I don't think they have ever been appreciated for their consumate artistry. Glad this performance was captured for posterity.

Top 3 concert gems on RU-vid. Sonically, this is as good as it can get. If the core members of Kansas were honest, this is the best they ever sounded live. And yes, I’m a huge fan of Steve Walsh. Record label and MTV changing tastes killed this band relatively shortly after this tour. Check out John and the band’s vocals on Hold On, Dust, Chasing Shadows and Crossfire, heck all of the songs...

I remember seeing Kansas live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in the 70's they were the lead act.King Crimson and the Kinks were opening bands. Excellent show!!!

I am almost 60 years of age and I still consider myself lucky to have seen Kansas perform at Radio City Music Hall some 35 years ago. Kansas rates as one of my favorite bands along with Jethro Tull, Yes, Boston and Pink Floyd. Rock and Roll will never die, at least not for me!

Always made sure we caught Kansas when they came around back in the 70s/early 80s. Saw the last tour with all the original band members. They were at the forefront of the instrumental/prog rock movement. Always tight and gave a great show. One of my favorite bands of this period.

What an Incredible group of talented, brilliant artists. Only other bands that could hold a candle to their light - Alan Parsons Project, & Asia (RIP John Wetton). John Elefante was a huge influence on my vocal style. Dennis Deyoung got a free pass into my favs because of him. Sadly, I was never able to find other musicians interested in doing progressive music. I often wonder if we will ever see bands like them again

Dopple....Sadly the dumbing down of the population ( done on purpose ) is the main reason progressive rock is too often overlooked these days....I'm 67 now & have watched this happen gradually over the past 40+ years to the point where some of the younger generations overall astound me at their inability to think for themselves....there are exceptions of course but overall it's not good & school test scores show it clearly.

Prog Rock is still progressing. A new band that I've gotten into in the last couple of years is YYNOT. They started out doing Rush cover videos, but also do their own music. They have 3 original CD's, and there's not a weak song on any of them. I've seen them live twice.

As you say, your post is a true gem! OK, Steve is not there, but how the band performs! 'No one together', wow! I will see Kansas live for the first time on July 29 in Stockholm. I bought Leftoverture when it was released in 1976 after having heard 'Carry on...' on the radio. From that day on I have listened to Kansas every week! Thanks from Johan in Stockholm, Sweden.

I've enjoyed all chapters of Kansas. This concert is fantastic. Quite possibly the "fullest" sounding lineup ever with 7 pieces, Livgren and Williams famous wall of guitar. The group vocals are the best with the added utility guy,,throw in extras like horns, woodwinds. Steinhart took a more prominent role after Walsh left. This is a very real authenic version of Kansas. I disagree about no good Kansas music made after 1980. I saw the Steve Morse version, awesome, 2000's "Somewhere to Elsewhere' was the best album since Leftoverature in my opinion. This is not a knock to the great Steve Walsh. Nobody could touch him in his prime, I'm glad I saw them a few years ago before Walsh left, it was in Dekalb Illinois with the NIU college symphony, they were on that night and Steve sounded better than he had in years. I got to meet the band for the first time, and i've seen them 13 times since 1977, I only wish John Elefante would have rejoined when Steve left, I never had a chance to see the band live during his tenure. The guy they have now is not a suiyable replacement for Walsh, only Elefante is.

Steve McFate I Agree so much about the fullness of the sound with the 7 piece line-up, and, I mean, Warren Ham is such a hot addition to any band. Also was the only time they did real great 3 part harmony singing. This is the first video concert I had of Kansas (like so many other fans) and I just adore it, what a performance !!!!! Robbie was right when he said it would be noticed I did get to see the master Steve Walsh live at his prime, at the Forum in Inglewood, CA, Point of Know Return tour (same tour as the live double album "two for the show") WOW ... and then again in the early nineties, same tour as "live at the whisky"

Steve McFate Steve,just wanted to say I did get to see them when Elefante went out with them on his first tour! Here in St. Louis,Mo. at the old Kiel Auditorium! I didn't get to see them with Steve but as you saidif anyone should have taken Steve's place,it was John! He was the closest thing to Steve as far as vocals go that you could get! they played everything,just like it sounded off the albums,which was one of the many things i loved about them! I was lucky enough to see a lot of my favorite classic rock bands back starting in the late 70's all the way up to the early 2000's! Probably close to a hundred different bands over the years! don't get to go as much anymore,so damn expensive! lol Just saw Little River Band last August,our village mayor got them to come in for a festival we hold every year! best part is it's free! haha This August they got Charlie Daniels,whom i've seen a few times but always love him! Also going to see El Monstero in August,and they are in case you don't know a Pink Floyd tribute band and are comparable to the Australian Pink Floyd Band,so I can't wait! Well I was long winded too,but when i saw your post i had to tell you this! Thanks for posting the concert and keep on rockin!

I became a Christian in June of 1980. Growing up I learned how to play my drums listening to Phil Ehart.I played, or tried to play, just like him. After I got saved this was the last concert I ever went to. How awesome to see this and download it to RealPlayer I may put this on dvd and see how good I can do. This was the last concert that I saw. This was when I saw Kerry had short hair. He'd gotten saved around that time also. Dave Hope is a Christian to.

truly they were the tightest ass kicking band ever! from the drums keyboard, that beautiful violin and these lead guitarist are still blowing my mind as i sit hear picking my jaw up off the floor! and John Elefante although only with them just 7 months here he is a phenom on lead with that beautiful gibson Les Paul, his voice and he plays beautifully on the keyboards himself, what a great concert i missed eh? but i know i'm not the only one. simply phenomenal this concert you cleaned up. t/y!!!

I honestly feel that Kansas never got it full due. Perhaps there is just too much to consider? People like the hits but their really deep stuff is off the main stream and too few really ever made it there to appreciate the messages they were sending. Groups came along later that were OBVIOUSLY influenced by Kansas, Dream Theater but none really captured that 'all about the music' vibe that Kansas had, they were so NOT about image and the shallow can't process doing anything for a greater good. Its too bad...these guys were either way ahead or way behind...but there just doesn't seem to be a place for this much talent and musical skill.

Dream Theatre never wrote real songs. Nothing ever felt natural, everything is written for the sake of being written. Kansas, Rush, Yes, early Genesis all felt very organic.

This is Fucking Incredible!! What a fuckin' show!! I did not realize how much live music, today, has fallen from grace (or from God's like these guys). I miss the 80's !! Todays live shows ALWAYS has some form of previous recorded enhancement because,.......TODAY'S MUSICIANS AND SINGES ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PULL SOMETHING LIKE THIS OFF.
