Once the religious, the hunted and weary Chasing the promise of freedom and hope Came to this country to build a new vision Far from the reaches of Kingdom and pope Like good Christians some would burn the witches Later some got slaves to gather riches But still from near and far to seek America They came by thousands, to court the wild But she just patiently smiled and bore a child To be their spirit and guiding light And once the ties with the crown had been broken Westward in saddle and wagon they went And 'till the railroad linked ocean to ocean Many, the lives which had come to an end While we bullied, stole and bought a homeland We began the slaughter of the red man But still from near and far to seek America They came by thousands to court the wild But she just patiently smiled and bore a child To be their spirit and guiding light The Blue and Grey they stomped it They kicked it just like a dog And when the war was over They stuffed it just like a hog And though the past has its share of injustice Kind was the spirit in many a way But its protectors and friends have been sleeping Now it's a monster and will not obey The spirit was freedom and justice And its keepers seemed generous and kind Its leaders were supposed to serve the country But now they won't pay it no mind Cause the people grew fat and got lazy Now their vote is a meaningless joke They babble about law and order But it's all just an echo of what they've been told Yeah, there's a monster on the loose It's got our heads into the noose And it just sits there watchin' The cities have turned into jungles And corruption is stranglin' the land The police force is watching the people And the people just can't understand We don't know how to mind our own business 'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us Now we are fighting a war over there No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost 'Cause there's a monster on the loose It's got our heads into the noose And it just sits there watchin' America, where are you now Don't you care about your sons and daughters Don't you know we need you now We can't fight alone against the monster America... Monster - Steppenwolf, 1968 Pay Attention, America... and VOTE!!!
ROCK ON!!! 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 i Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas... the best concert venues of my life... Royals Stadium, Arrowhead Stadium and Bonner Springs outdoor amphitheater... I Love Mo and Ks... Bushwhackers and Jayhawkers, alike.
I saw Kansas at Arrowhead in 74. They were the opener for Black Oak Arkansas. I also saw ZZ Top around the same time. I also saw Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult at these concerts. Both were middle acts, but I can't remember which concerts? I was only 11 then.
Totally agree, Captain Nemo ... totally bad ass riff! What makes the original song so cool is the interplay between Kerry's distorted guitar and Steve's Hammond C3 organ .... But Warren Ham's cheesy saxophone in place of Steve's organ just sucks!
rich Williams, you are an unreal guitarist, you can play anything,i honestly believe you are good enough to accompany any band, any at all,i'm in awe as a guitarist
bickering and cutting up people you don't even know, how could you- theY're stars, masters at their trade which is kickass rock and roll, notice you don't see any sheet music, no notes, nothing-NOTHING--THEY ARE MASTER MUSICIANS, I SAW THEM WHEN THEY WERE FORMING,STEVE HAD A SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEM, BIG FRICKEN DEAL, YOU BECOME A OVER NIGHT SUCCESS,MONEY,DOPE.LOOSE WOMEN, no matter what--- that would bring anyone down,i'm just DAMN GLAD THEY ALL MET, AND JAMMED, WE GET TO LISTEN
Great performance by John, even better than the original. I understand why people are upset over the sax, but it's an addition to the organ, not a replacement. And personally I think it's sounds smooth and mighty. But John's voice is really mighty here, extremely controlled range and clean pitch. (Y)
Selmer1430P Yeah, Selmer, Phil plays a cowbell in this song. I think most every video of a 70's rock song that has been uploaded on RU-vid now has at least one "more cowbell" comment. Am I the only one who thinks the "SNL more cowbell joke" has finally run its course?
anybody KANSAS hires on the mic, would be top tier talent, does not matter you don't know them, there are talents you will NOT learn about till they become ""FAMOUS''. BUT REMEMBER NOTHING BEATS FIRST DESIGN..... kansas was genius when they first played i remember, i'm old and saw them as kids, god they're talented, KERRY FOUND THE SOURCE, LOL HE SEEKED--HE FOUND--ENJOY CHILDREN
Bobby Steinhardt was the primary vocals here. definitely not Steve Walsh. Steve Kicks ass, but I would have wanted to hear Steinhardt's voice more often in the band.
They've replaced all of the cool organ parts with some cheesy saxophone ... don't like it .... most of all it no longer sounds like Kansas. But if you ax the sax and add some organ, this would be a great sounding performance.
