This is the new Kanwrite #9 fountain pen nib in the Kanwrite Mammoth pen! I ordered this pen a couple of weeks ago directly from Kanwrite, though they are generally not available yet (in India or the USA) on the Kanwrite website. The nib is big and beautiful, and the Kanwrite Mammoth is also a pen with a ton of potential, although I'm not crazy about the clip. I may replace it.

Since people keep asking: This pen is not generally for sale yet on any websites, including the Kanwrite website, but if you email Kanwrite, they may sell one to you directly. That's what I did, and they had one to send along. My price was $80 plus shipping ($30 to the USA), and I understand that in India, the price is 6000 rupees, though I'm not certain that either of those numbers is completely settled; it may be more or less when the pen finally goes up for sale on their website. Good luck!

I followed the steps you suggested and bought the black version of this pen. It’s been great, all except for a slight leaking problem which was fixed by heat-setting the nib. I have tremors and arthritis so a big nib on a fat pen like this makes writing much easier for me.

I'm very tempted by this pen. I love big pens with nibs that match, but your observations regarding the clip and cap design are putting me off it for now. The clip looks identical to the Noodler's Neponset and Konrad clips.

At the recent SFPenshow Magna Carta had a couple of pens with massive nibs. I could be wrong but they were at least #10 and maybe even #12. Seems like we're in a nib arms race. I just hope that someone will be able to reproduce a nib that's equivalent to a vintage flex nib.

The cap finial along with the clip resembles the mammoth and its trunk . Probably it may be the intended design.
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
Possible, I guess, but I don't see the resemblance to a mammoth at all. I'd be much more inclined to believe that it was intended to look like a vintage Wearever pen, some of which had a very similar cap shape.

1. I detect no size-related differences in performance in nibs ranging from #2 to #8. 2. Some find it easier to see what they are doing with a larger nib. Some prefer a grip section further from the paper. 3. I agree the cap looks misshapen.

I typically hold my pen higher up on the body, so a bigger pen is best for me. Namiki Emperor is a bit too rich for me, but this seems perfect so I ordered one. First thing I’ll do is remove that clip when I get it!

I like the two pens for different reasons, so it's hard to compare. I prefer the body shape and build quality of the Ranga. I think that the No.9 nib on the Mammoth makes it really unique, and it's also a nice pen. I could have ordered the 9B with a Bock No.8 nib, and that would probably be ideal, but if I had the choice of writing with one of the two for a week, I'd go with the Ranga.
@thorhilda

Yes, it was a very interesting video. Thank you. As for the Mammoth, I feel that this is a slapdash design, released quickly just to brag about having a larger nib than a oversized #8 nib. Kanwrite may see itself as a direct competitor to Jinhao. There are so many things they could have done with the mammoth theme, but it feels more like an urgency to get something out, sooner rather than better.
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
Thanks! Yeah, that's sorta how I felt about the pen (pretty obvious from the video, I guess). So frustrating... if they had just taken the time to make a bigger clip for the pen they could have used a more attractive cap design. As it is, the clip feels like something I'd get on a $3 pen, and that really ruins the feel for me.

Actually, the No.9 nib was in the works for a couple of years... I saw a post on Facebook of Kanwrite showing off this nib's prototype... My guess is it took the release of the X159 for them to finally put that nib into a pen.
@veryhealthy9962
@veryhealthy9962 Год назад
Understandable pov. But I actually suspect the maker is currently busy looking for affordable mass manufacturing vendors. You mentioned they only sell direct for now - An indicator of it being made by the current experienced prototyper. (He/she can only make realistically make 3 dozen at most lol)
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
@@veryhealthy9962 My understanding is that the first batches of Mammoth pens have been distributed to Indian pens shops, and when all of the Indian shop orders have been filled, Kanwrite will list them on their own site. So, for those of us who are not in India and can't visit the local Indian pen shops, contacting them directly is the only option. I don't know that these have been rushed to market... but if so, that would be less concerning than Kanwrite making the decision to use this common clip (for example) to save money and increase profit.

I didnt know you were 6 foot tall. Im also 6 foot, so i have longer than avg fingers. Combined with the anatomy of my hands and the fact that fountain pens are optimal at a 45 degree angle, most pens arent comfortable for me to grip, because the grip section is too narrow. My favorite grip section is on the Jinhao x159, but the nibs are poor quality. Other pens with a grip section similar in width is the MB 149, which costs 1K or Namiki Emperor, which costs 2K. I wish more pen companies would produce wide grip pens for more affordable prices. The cheapest pen with Jowo 6 size/quality with a Jinhao X159/MB 149 size grip that I've found, is maybe the Delta DV, which costs around 200. It's not terribly expensive, but there are so many sub-100 dollar Jowo 6 pens, that it sucks Id have to pay significantly more just for a wider grip section.

Well that's an interesting product but in my view the cap is simply ugly along with the clip size which is just odd. I find this to be the case for most of the India made pens and the reason why when possible I order them clipless. I've got a few Rangas setup this way compared to the FPR I own I much prefer without a clip, plus the cap is then turned from a single piece of ebonite or acrylic without the discontinuity that adding a clip generally create. Now that is not the main event of course and I am quite curious about this No 9 nib with an ebonite feed it must be close to a firehose, which you seem to confirm. Hoping that they can come up with a decent looking pen with this nib, I would maybe try to buy one if the price is reasonable. Thanks for sharing this review.
@thewetpen

This nib is certainly nice and wet, although it's not a gusher, surprisingly... just good, heavy flow. As for the clips on Indian pens, it really depends on the pen. I'm a big fan of the current clip that comes on the Ranga Splendour, for example... but yes, I tend to order them clipless too.

I don't mind large pens generally, but a pen with a grip this large takes a little getting used to. I'm generally a fan of Kanwrite nibs; I only wish that they flattened the writing surface of their broad nibs a bit more; often they are a little too ball-shaped to write as broad as intended.

Thanks, Chris! Yes, the arms race of nibs is just beginning! I don't mind the bulk of the pen body, actually... it's a comfortable size for writing and not the sort of thing that I'd put in my pocket, anyway... but with a nib/feed of this size, the grip is getting a little too large to be comfortable. I got used to it, but this will definitely be the upper limit for me. I do like the fact that I can buy this whole pen with No.9 nib for (a bit more than) half the price of a Bock #8 nib unit, so its a reasonable way to try out a very large nib. Still they didn't manage to get this pen onto their website, strange. I agree regarding the clip. It's flimsy doesn't fit to the overall appearance of the pen. Reviewers have often emphasized the size of the nib eg. 21k Sailor Progear realo v king of pen - bigger nib on the latter. Re larger nib: the IMPRESSION I get, perhaps my own inference rather than the reviewers, is that bigger might be a little softer. Stunning pen and I love ebonite... I actually think that the pen is beautiful, I'm a big fan of these type of tapered caps. Pens of the 40's and 50's would often have them (eg P-51). Ok, from the clip to end of cap it looks linear but in my opinion this adds to character. Clip size, well again it also adds to character and in fact and rhymes with the overall "practicality". I would argue that Kanwrite got it right.

Hi Matthew, great video. I use a Kanwrite Desire, with a gold flex nib as my everyday writer. It's an outstanding affordable modern flex nib and the pen is perfectly proportioned, including the clip. After watching your Ranga Giant 9B I bought the same colour - I love the pen but not the Ranga nib I chose for it, which may or may not be a Kanwrite nib. I think you make a really valid point about the clip - which is a real missed opportunity for Kanwrite to make a real talking point pen, just the like the Jinhao x159, which I also bought, for its proportions but that nib is very ordinary. The nib, clip and body need to be in proportion for my aesthetic tastes. BTW I'm considering a Good Blue Gold flex nib unit for the Ranga, but I might have to purchase the entire pen just to get the nib, so I'm holding off for the moment. I'll let you know how I get on. I personally like larger nibs. I won't buy a pen with a nib smaller than a #6. I find not only is the added girth more comfortable, but the added height also accommodates the changes I seem to have naturally made since using fountain pens ie. moving up the barrel of the pen. Another reason why I think once you start using a fountain pen, it's harder to use a ballpoint - but that's another story. I do find the #8 nibbed pens very nice to write with. More so than expected. I think the pen looks great, but the taper of the pen cap looks weird. May be they did it for the clip. Hey, you just said that now in the video. It isn't the first pen that has a short clip on a giant pen, but I don't think it would look that bad if not for that taper. I think they should not have added a clip, and put a roll stop instead. One thing that is interesting and unique, is that converter and added cartridge. That's a nice detail.

Interesting video. Very well produced, which is always a bonus. I had a similar Kanwrite model in the smaller Legacy series. The smell of the pen was unbearablen ahad to throw it away. No Kanwrites for me in the future unless they sort this issue.

Hey Dustin! I like the nib and the pen isn't bad, but I probably wouldn't buy the pen again, at this price. I'll wait until I can get the nib in a Ranga pen or something like that, next.

Towards the end of the video you showed 7 different pens. Can you provide some names, brands for hose pens. Also, excellent presentation. So elegant and classy. 👏👏👏👏👏 standing ovation on your videos, your presentation,
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
Ahh, yes. Those seven pens were: a Ranga Abhimanyu (with a Kaigelu nib swapped in), a Ranga Abhimanyu Grand, a Lotus Everest, and a Delmoon Jentel (there are videos about the preceding 3 pens on my channel here). There's a Birmingham Pen Company 6th Avenue made in their "Sea Holly" acrylic; Birmingham mostly seems to just stick to making ink now, but their Nemosine nibs are excellent, and their pens are good when you can get them. Then a Ranga Giant 9B (also a video), and another Ranga Abhimanyu Grand. Glad you're enjoying the videos!

Great video. You mentioned it was twice the price of the Moonman. Bock or standard? So approximate price? Thanks.
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
Yeah, I left out the price because I don't know if what they charged me is going to be the standard price outside of India, or if they were just gouging me because it's early and I'm an American, and that's standard practice... Anyway, the pen was $80, plus $30 shipping from India. So, not cheap, but not terrible.
@AtilioEscobar
@AtilioEscobar Год назад
Did you mention how much the pen will be? I might of missed that..
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
I didn't, because it's not officially for sale anywhere yet. They charged me $80 plus shipping, but I wasn't sure whether they were taking liberties with me because of my zeal (and because I'm American), or whether that's what the real price is going to be. Seems like the Indian price, though, is about 6000 rupees, so somewhere in the $75-80 range seems pretty solid.

Wow...the nib looks great. What is the weight of the pen? The pen is not available on their website? U contacted them directly?
@thewetpen
@thewetpen Год назад
I did contact them directly, and they were able to send me one that way... but I think they'll be on the Kanwrite website soon. The weight with the cap is about 39 grams, and without the cap its about 29 grams.

Very impressed by your editing! I was interested in this pen but now I can't unsee the weird taper in the cap lol. I might have to overcome it for the novelty of a #9 nib.

Thanks! Yes, the cap is odd, but I should say... I actually got used to it after a couple of days and it started to look normal. I never did grow to like the clip, though :-)

Yes, they're not generally available yet, but you can contact Kanwrite directly via email, and they might be able to sell you one that way (that's what I did). They say that the pen should be listed on their website soon, but I don't know whether that means this month or this year or what.

Well, Noodler's pens are made in India and use Kanwrite nibs, so it wouldn't be too surprising :-)
@ronwoch
@ronwoch Год назад
@@thewetpen I knew they had stuff made in India, didn't know by who. Makes sense! Especially when I realized the clip also looks very similar to the ones used on Noodler pens. :) Either way, pretty cool! I remember reading somewhere (on the internet, where everything is true!) that a lot of collector's prefer the larger nib vintage pens, saying that bigger nibs have more "character" to the writing. I have noticed that the larger flex nibs DO seem to have a *little* bit softer feel. But vintage pens are all so unique even when it is the same model and same nib, it's kinda hard to say it is the size of the nib, or just a softer or harder individual example.

I'm very happy with the weight and balance of the pen alone, while writing. Nice and comfortable, for a large pen. Does the gold nib feel any different to you? Some of my gold nibs feel a little softer, but others feel basically the same as steel.
