They called the sped up soul samples "Chipmunk Soul" back then.

I think Quincy Jones made that sped up soul sound famous on Michael Jackson’s song PYT, by speeding up MJ’s background vocals. Later the RZA made it famous in Hip Hop in the 90s.

@@ABoomerReacts it was very subtle how Quincy sped it up at the end of the song. The RZA is the de facto leader and producer of the greatest Rap group of all time. The Wu Tang Clan. I hope you get into them soon.

The sped up samples were a style back during that time. Most samples vocal or not were sped up to make the song different then the original, probably why most young people don't know that certain things are sampled. Also Chaka Khan, must have felt the same way that you did, cause SHE DEFINITELY hated this song with a PASSION!, lol.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Zkb5Yfvv0E.html

I would highly recommend Hey Mama before moving to his newer stuff. Really contextualizes his relationship with his mother that permanently changed his trajectory with his career. Originally there was a trilogy of albums he did with "Through The Wire" and Jesus Walks" being from the College Dropout, then Hey Mama is from Late Registration, and the final album was Graduation in 2007. He was going to make a album called Good Ass Job about graduating "ghetto university" as it was later referred to, but his mother passed and he recorded a entirely different album sonically and emotionally from anything at the time from him or really anyone else which is called "808s and Heartbreak." Kanye has the kind of discography that really builds context each album into who he truly is as a person, and so on certain songs, especially from his last 3 albums, they make a whole lot more sense when you look back at what hes said and gone through over the years. The best example of this is his relationship with God on his latest album (which is also named after his mother Donda). He starts the album and seems to be falling back on God in a negative way, almost expecting him to help him out and it comes off arrogant. By the end of the album hes clearly transformed his idea of who he is as a person, and it feels like for the first time since Graduation released, he sounds like he's actually accepted her passing and moved on from the way the media has treated him (much of his songs have been about this). Hey Mama is a personal song to Kanye and he even performed it live on Ellen with Donda in the crowd. Highly highly recommend

The high pitch cartoony sound was really popular in 90s hip hop samples because most producers sampled slow records, and put the vocals on faster beats. They didn't have the technology back then to speed it up and keep the octave the same. I think hip hop listeners became accustomed to the chipmunk samples.

"Through the Fire" was a very popular song back in the day. I like Chaka Khan but I wasn't a big fan of this song. I think Kanye should have just paid for the use of the song, and had some other vocalist sing it as "through the wire".
