Karajan conducts Beethoven 5th Symphony

Master French director Henri-Georges Clouzot produced with Karajan a series of music documentaries dubbed “The Art of Conducting” - this prime example of “music to watch” has hardly ever been surpassed. Shot in a stunning true “film noir” black and white, indeed more “film” than filmed concert, as exemplified here by Beethoven’s Fifth, become all the more apparent when seen alongside efficient but conventional direction of classical concerts later on.

There is only one conductor for this masterpiece. There is only one orchestra to perform it. That’s called PERFECTION.

This is so good that no other conductors in many generations to come can surpass Karajan not only because of his impeccable technique but also because of that genius is genius therefore they can't be replaced.

Polecam film ,,Beethoven,,...Karajan to arcymistrz

Remark on the wonderful timpanist.... see how he plays in a fully German military style... as I recall when I saw the BPO in the early 70's the timpanist played exactly like this. He played so loudly in the storm in the pastoral symphony that the Times newspaper of London wrote a front page article on him.
@navigator1074
@navigator1074 3 года назад
That was Werner Thärichen, Aristocrat of timpanists. BPO was (and is perhaps still) a Prussian orchestra with a very distinctive and refined sound. How I miss that bass driven sound and hard playing of the old BPO... Most orchestras of today have no character at all.
@antoineduchamp4931
@antoineduchamp4931 3 года назад
@@navigator1074 Indeed Sir I do recall Herr Tharichen... I remember an interview with him on the BBC... like you I do miss the sound of the 'old' BPO.. I have him playing of course on so many CD performances of this orchestra.... as we say in England..."they don't make them like that any more" - being an expression of respect.

Ah, the 'old' Berlin Philharmonic... though today they are great, they do not sound as good as this. It was from here until the middle/late 1970's when they were at their greatest. I heard them live in the 70's and I will not forget it, ever. At least in this film we get to see the players... in later times, in these films, we only ever got to see Karajan, and nothing of the players... most of these guys had probably played for Furtwangler. Thank you so much for posting.

This is a tremendous achievement. Note that the dates of the Clouzot-Karajan project were 1965-67 and this one was filmed in '66. I have been enjoying the 1963 Karajan BPO Beethoven symphony recordings but the 5th simply doesn't share the same masterful intensity found here. Still, for sheer brilliant nuance, the Kleiber 5th reigns supreme in my heart, although for dramatic power on the podium, no one, not even Bernstein tops von K. (A chacun etc.)
@juanuceda401
@juanuceda401 3 года назад
Kleiber's performance is as powerful as Karajan's one until 6:55 when Karajan got the right tempo, sound, intensity and wrath (at least for my ears) and Kleiber's performance was left behind... Until they met again at the end of the first movement...

I grew up watching Karajan. His executions are personally irreplaceable. The sound of the orchestra, of the Berlin Philharmonic, has not been until now that I write similar. Because he was unique in what he did. From the direction of the presence to the last sound from each family of musical instruments. At that time, women were not allowed in the orchestras or in this particular one due to the statute.

It is such a uniquely powerful performance, as if capturing that the composer was an emotional, angry, deaf artist, desperate to get his talent registered for posterity. Unfortunately, for me, having grown up listening to only this version for ten years in the 1980s, I cannot warm to any performance currently offered. None capture the sheer weight, the colossal gravitas of this conductor, this orchestra, this performance, where every note is given a reverence.
