Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Live at Salzburg, 1987. One of my favourite pieces of footage of the great conductor, in his Indian summer with this great orchestra. Even has time for a wink to one of the players, must have played it just the way he'd imagined :)
Also if anyone owns the copyright to this material, just post a comment or something and I'll take it down straightaway

This is my very favorite of Wagner...so very beautiful it almost hurts!

In my mind, this man understood how to pay homage to every composer's wishes. His technique, pristine and impeccable....he did not "overly emote" and yet...there was a depth of heart and soul contained within each interpretation. Too many do not understand this. I have argued this point with my colleagues many times. He understood both the instrumentalists as well as vocalists. This is most beautifully demonstrated in his interpretation of Beethoven's 9th. I've never heard anything before or since then, that has come close. Er war ein Genie. Vielen Dank!

You're very welcome :) Yes, quite often people comment about his interpretations as being too perfect/superficial, but ironically its them who can't see beyond the surface.

I don't think he really understood EVERY composer and was able to pay homage to their wishes, as you say. For instance, Igor Stravinsky actually publicly complained about Karajan's interpretation of "The Rite Of Spring". Most of Karajan's modern music recordings are a bit superficial, honestly. I am not talking of this specific recording here or any of his interpretations of classical music. But give a listen to Karajan's recording of Rite Of Spring and then compare that to, say, Michael Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony or Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Or to a recording with Stravinsky himself. You're definitely gonna hear a huge difference in quality. I agree with you regarding his recording of Beethoven's 9th. That was awesome ;)

Johnny Cashe chacun la goût! are you also a pro conductor? i DO agree about Zubin, and can name several other mentors. Again....everyone has...."opinion" :-)

bravaLiz Sure :) I would never generally say "Karajan is a bad conductor" or anything like that. It's just a problem I have since I am listening to late- romantic and modern music most of the time, and I suppose Karajan's strength lies more in conducting classical music. Which is fine, of course. And no, I am not a pro conductor ;) I just love music in general.

This was the last concert Karajan gave before he died. Later in the concert, Jessye Norman sang "The Death of Love" ("Liebestod") from Tristan & Isolde.

I can see how Seiji Ozawa was influenced by Karajan. Many of the conducting motion and hand actions look similar . Karajan's conducting almost all music by heart is very impressive.

Perche 532 like? Troppo lenta forse per questo mondo che va (andava, scrivo in pieno corona virus) veloce?
