These terms are used unnecessary by some headlineseekers...some pay heed..some doesn't. .nothing to do with normal cinemalovers..his knowledge about film is unparalleled..he may not convert it to films
As much as people like to hate on Karan Johar (including me for some of the films he's directed in the past), we cannot negate the fact that he is a mastermind businessman. Not a fan of him as a director, but he carried on the legacy of Dharma, produced some exquisite movies, introduced some brilliant actors to the audience and is probably the most well-spoken celebrities out there.
How? All the BS talk in the world and he'll keep churning trash that no one can give 2 shits about. Did any of us care for SOTY? Do average desis care what he keeps going on about in designer trash? Or NRIs for that matter with all his tacky films? The only thing that Dharma has done good is help germ small indies where the hidden game plan is to eventually turn those filmmakers into tomorrow's mainstream trash delivery device! YAWN next Netflix bs title please!!
@@Iminoamino Being self-aware is very difficult too. Takes a toll on your mind to actually embrace the criticism. I love the fact that he knows and sees a big gap between two or three different varieties of cinema. And I personally feel that, if given the creative and artistic freedom, he can make an unapologetically realistic commercial movie. He knows he is not the best... He never wanted to. He just wants to redefine the concept of Hindi cinema. I also like what he says about a good movie. A good movie must be watched by all the avid film lovers. You must have a target audience. For commercial movies, the target audience are the folks that come to theatres. For arthouse and indie cinema, the target audience are deep cinema appreciators and the critics and jury members of big award festivals.
One thing you take away once again is KJo knows his stuff & most importantly knows what he isn't good at. His analysis of Bollywood & its evolution to where it is today is so totally spot on! My favorite remains Kabhi Alvida na Kehna & I really wish to see more of such work from him.
yes he knows his stuff, and stuff is about being gay... and chutiya ... :):) is chutiye chakke ko bacche god lene pade kyunki chutiya impotent he .,, ispe bhi bata na tu chutiye...
@@ananyadobriyal2733 I am not in the field of filmmaking (yet) but I know my fair share of world cinema. The first step to that, as he said, is watching a lot of stuff. I've watched a healthy chunk of arthouse and world cinema and I too want to be a filmmaker.
23:30 Interesting that he mentioned that he had such a positive relationship with his dad and had no conflict, which made it uninteresting for making a movie...But Gautham Menon also had such a relationship with his dad and always uses a great father role in many of his movies...I remember he once told BR that he could never write a negative father role due to his love for his dad...
And that is what he did tooo anupam kher in kuch kuch was a great father ... Kabhi alvida had a great father ... What he meant was he cannot have a story apart from that..
I personally feel "My name is Khan" is his best film by far.. He has a great sense of music, every film of his has great music in it. My fav "kavi alvida na kehna" album
Galatta plus : you have interspersed the content every one minute. I get that you want to monetise your channel but have some thought on user experience . A 44 min interview is now more than an hour long , ads appearing in middle of sentences . Come on
I must say One Thing that Bollywood is more known worldwide for Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham than for Lagaan despite its nomination at Oscars ....so Kjo shud be proud of his work
Frankly people laugh when they watch that stuff. The colors attract them, but believe me when they actually watch that crap, they feel irrirated and frustrated.
He is one of the best filmoholic, technical , businesses he knows every part movies .. how movies works .. and working towards bringing all industries in one platform
Karan, you make beautiful movies. Please keep doing that. Ignore all the negatively. KANK and ADHM are your best movies. KWK is the best indian show ever. Lots of love and power to you.
I would absolutely pay to watch KJ being interviewed by Neelesh Mishra on The Slow Interview. The guy can just talk and talk and also be super honest about himself. So much one can get through that.
i love KJ. his attitude, his taste, his treatment of cinema is unparallel. he is simply amazing. one can either hate him or love him. If there is someone from Bollywood that i want to meet is Karan. I just loooooove him
I think even Karan Johar didn't realize that he has evolved in terms of so many things when BR asked about Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. It was a intense Karan Johar love story which was missing from a long time. And he has a excellent taste for music. The songs blended with Indian classical music and western music. What an album it was. Look even Pritam cannot recreate the same in other movies. He is an excellent filmmaker and great judge of a movie. He looks as the movie as it is. He looks like an elitist snob, but really isn't. He genuinely care about Indian cinema.
You are right Karan! Many of us enjoyed those videos you posted on your kids. Their innocence and being themselves brought a smile and joy during those Covid times. And BTW, many of us LOVED Kalank even though it didn’t do well at the Box Office. Even though some of the settings were unrealistic to the plot, we forgave those inconsistencies and enjoyed the story (and the superb acting of every actor) as it unfolded under the direction of your director, Abhishek Verman. I would also like to add- calling Alia Bhatt the ‘best’ actor in our country across all genders is only detrimental to her career. We all know that’s not true. Every actor has their good and bad movies. I watched the trailers of both Gangubhai and Sadak 2. She was amazing in the former and Razi but her shrill voice in Sadak 2, made me want to shut off the trailer right away. And we have so many amazing actors in our country. So calling her the ‘best’ is false praise which will not be helpful to her.
@@rajivjonathan6836 not true...anushka shetty has given back to hit films which fetched 1000crores like rudramadevi, bahubali 1&2, billa, arundati etc.
No Karan, Kabhi kushi gham one of the greatest films in India, first game changer, whenever I see that movie literally goose bumps, do not think the films which talks about issues are great films, even though larger than life film ..the touch gave to human emotions is unmatchable.. through out the movie a lot of scenes made us cry with happy tears.Do not say u r underperformer.
k3g make hindi cinema really big & Shahrukh khan famous all around the world, every child in my small village know who Shahrukh khan is, if you talk about india Shahrukh khan & k3d come into their mind, that's karan johar power, k3g is huge family movie all ages can enjoy it.
even though telugu cinema have been coming up with movies fresh scripts like jersey, pelli choopulu and jathi ratnalu it's always been commercial movies which made to the top.. but these young generation actors have also become equally popular if not more across india..
sadly telugu cinema is a long subjected to selective viewing and selective criticism. (they only watch the big ticket masalas and only judge based on them.)
@@silaakkidumma being a telugu can you just name at least oka padi movies poina samvatsaram ochinavi? edit: cinemalu chudaru kani kathal dobutaru. Also who said anything about SS Rajamouli?
@@silaakkidumma i said "(they only watch the big ticket masalas and only judge based on them.)" and you literally did the same. you missied some quality cinema like cinema bandi, akshavani, naandhi, pitta kathalu, gamanam, republic, konda polam, skylab, ek mini katha, polimera, shyam singha roy and jathiratnalu and many more. on a side note, ela kathal dengadam mani cinemalu chusi denginchuko... aa tarwata vagu...
@@Sai_2346 Selective viewing??? Seriously... You are cherry picking one or two films which are relatively better than most other Telugu films and accusing others of selective viewing. Even the movies you mentioned aren't "new" concepts or ideas in anyway, they are just new to telugu and different from the rest. I can't remember a single movie from past 12 months that was not a masala film. Nothing wrong in making those, but the problem with Telugu is we only make those.
With all the negativity around Karan for his stupid shows and supporting nepotism, I am a fan of his knowledge on movies and his talent as a director. Everyone has to accept that fact.
I saw a completely different Karan Johar in this interview. You have a knack of helping people open up and talk about their vulnerabilities so openly.. wow!
I love the way soty was presented...with all the songs and college life even though it was called very dramatic...but it was made as a ' film ' and not as a real life story. My name is khan is one of the best movies of karan johar along with K3g.
I had watched lot of interviews of karan, may it be roundtable, one on one but one thing is quite compulsory.. Bahubali 2 collected 500cr in hindi belt shell shocked him.. Great feeling everytime as he praises bahubali 2.. Telugu cinema 😍😍
Karan Johar was the presenter of the Hindi versions of SS Rajamouli's Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. So he wasn’t shocked. He was lagging all the way to the bank
He is a much better filmmaker than all these one film wonders now. He picturises beatiful songs, gives one or two great dialogues to the actors and can still make a classic hindi movie lover sit in the theatre for two hours. Also, i don't think he preaches anything.. like ever! It's all the subtext. Would love to see him getting into his strong forte 'Family' Genre again.
What’s with all the nay saying about KJo…he was born with a silver spoon but worked hard, smart and built one of the most successful self brands and studios which has given plenty of filmmakers , actors , smaller artists , associated peripheral industry a living …. The people who started and continue to nurture some sort of hate and other ‘over used’ nepotistic views against KJo need to have a hard look in the mirror . Take a chill pill and start appreciating creativity and STOP supporting those pessimistic jealous hate mongers. Good interview BR ! Keep rocking as always
Kuch kuch hota hai is definitely forms part of Archives of Indian Cinema. Karan Johar you don't what you have given to teenager of 90's We have a memory to live with when we watch KKHH , K3G and ADHM
This is not true. He just stopped bullying outsiders publicly. We don't know what he does off camera. Until a couple of weeks back only he tried to sabotage Yami Gautam's A Thursday.
The day ‘Bollywood’ stops talking about the ‘commercial’ aspects of cinema, they’ll do well. The only thing that the movie makers in Kerala is doing is to be as sincere and genuine to their craft rather than thinking of how to trick audience and loot their money. They don’t insult the sensibilities of the moviegoers. They respect the audience. In Bollywood, the bosses of the production houses-like this guy is the king. Whereas in south, it’s the audience who are treated royally with rich content.
As a film director...he is good but as a film producer...he is marvellous 🔥 and for me Dharma productions is the best production house ever...(Even better than YRF) because they always tried different genres....!!!! Eg - Kuch kuch hota hai (Coming of age....that to in 90s) Duplicate (Action Comedy) Kaal (Supernatural Thriller) Gippi ( Teen Comedy Drama) Agneepath (Crime Action drama) Bhoot Part 1 (Horror Thriller) Raazi (Spy period Thriller) Brothers and Upcoming movie Liger ( Sports Drama) Kesari, Gunjan Saxena and Shershah (Biopic and War dramas) AND NOW THE BIGGEST MOVIE AND GENRE BRAHMASTRA 🔥 (FANTASY ADVENTURE SUPERHERO) I love Dharma productions ❤️❤️🔥🔥
I wish karan johar, or anybody from Dharma could have used this exceptional talent called parineeti chopra more in their films. Most of their strong lead characters went to Alia bhatt. Parineeti Chopra is a talent which is underused. She was fantastic in hasee toh phasee, sabdeep aur pinky faraar, ishaqzade, ricky bhal, shudh desi romance, meri pyari bindu etc. Talent like her deserves wayyy more than what she is getting.. 💛
I've watched the entire interview, something which I've rarely done, and I must say that Karan has a brilliant mind and perspective, coupled with an equally brilliant oratorical ability. Effortless and succinct!
He is not at all wrong in saying that alia is trully one of the finest actors we have. She is trully who had proven her muscle over and over again put her in a bad movie also she has an ability to lift that also. Such sheer talent she has.
The problem with the HINDI cinema is they are becoming more western in the storylines and taking. South Indian films are more Indian and talking about everyday Indian. Indians don’t want to see Geharaayin or other Bollywood bullshit.

With all due respect, your understanding of regional cinema was minimal. Regional cinema like Telugu Tamil and others too made some great films in 50s and 60s. Classics like maaya bazar and missamma and it’s just that audience for regional language is limited those days unlike Hindi cinema . Now regional cinema is surpassing those hurdles and that’s the only difference. Honestly its not Hindi that taught South about angry young man hero types. Telugu made some great commercials with Shri NTR way back and he is a pioneer in the mythological s and later Chiranjeevi Garu mesmerized audience. They just didn’t get a platform unlike the current generation.
Exactly our mythological movies, some NTR, ANR movies and especially K. Viswanath sir’s movie had universal stories. Also their making and story telling was on par with any Hollywood director. My belief was Bollywood has always underlooked south industry. For example P suseelamma, Chitramma, S Janakamma, SPB sir are equal when compared to Lata Mangeshkar Garu, or Kishore Kumar or Mohammed rafi. But we rarely see Bollywood appreciating south talents compared to what we do to north talent.
Very true. South had great mythological and fictional(Jaanapadhaalu) films which were unique and in one way brought epics into every home. Vittalacharya was a great example of creative thinking and way ahead of his time in terms of technique. We had balachandar garu who took up strong woman characters, vishwanath garu who brought a sense of aesthetic to films.
He is in real life or was as a young man a very genuine and honest man, who got caught up with the whole Bollywood thing, but if you look at his early career and the earlier seasons of Koffe with Karan, he is very respectful and professional. I disagree with some Koffe Episodes and rankings and some things he said on his show, but he also said that it‘a all fun. But if you listen to him talk and how he works shows his talent and understanding of indian cinema. He also made iconic movies like Kuch Kuch and K3G. Every actor of this Gen says that they grew up with both movies and even internationally all his movies did amazingly well. In Germany everyone knows who Karan is and everyone watched his movies. Also i personally find it very sweet that he made K3G for his parents as a love letter

Admire him for being so appreciative of tollywood - tohfa, Himmat wala, maqsad etc all are from tollywood. Even before, in black and white times there were many tollywood movies remade in hindi with the great Meenakumari ji.
Box office collection of South Indian movie and The Kashmir Files is a eye opener. Good Karan Johar is acknowledging it. Karan Is pure businessmen 💙💙 He loves business of cinema . That's great.
70s and 80s were considered as the Golden Era of Kannada cinema, where most of the film made here were remade in hindi and other languages... There were back to back films that won national awards.. Nationally acclaimed films etc.. Distributors and exhibitors restricted themselves to Hindi. Thankfully after the digital platforms like YT came in, everyone had access to all content and people started liking the work of South Indian Cinema.. So know facts Karan Johar
very well said 👏👏 60s -80s was the golden era of kannada film industry...directors like siddalingaiah, dore bhagwan, puttana kanagal, girush kasarvalli, sunil kumar desai, dwarkish, geetapriya, b v karanth, g v iyer etc. made women centric, wholesome, content oriented films. the success rate of KFI was the highest among all south industries. now the malayalam n marathi industries are praised for doing contwnt oriented, realistic cinema but kannada cinema has always been doing it!! mid 90s to mid 2010s kannada films hit their lowest...everyone tried to recreate OM n jogi n get success n failed miserably. thankfully since last 4-5 years we are making good movies n gone back to our roots. film makers like raj shetty, rishabh shetty, pawan kumar are doing greta jobs. hope they continue to deliver such content oriented movies than do the overused mafia, rowdism, mother sentiment shitty story!

from the industry, karan is one of the few people who i can listen to at any given point. he's self aware, speaks well and is just accurate at all times. his intellect when it comes to the industry amazes me to no bounds. keeping aside the aspect of nepotism or anything else he may have been responsible for, the keen listener in me will never be tired of hearing him speak. !
Sholay was a rip-off from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. So, it is no textbook. I'm sure Karan Johar hasn't heard of filmmakers like Puttana Kanagal, K Viswanath, Balu Mahendra, Balachander, Bharathiraja, Adoor Gopalkrishnan, and many other contemporary filmmakers like Vetrimaran, Lijo Jose.
dude, don't show off your camera count. Please keep the frame steady. It's difficult to focus on his words if you are switching frames without any requirement.
I must say he said it rightfully few things anyone in this business do it commercially for money, to live a better life for their kids.He is absolutely correct
He gets so much hate and trolling these days, but sometimes i do ask does he deserve it? As a 16 year old watching K2H2 was a phenomenon, i was in my 10th Grade about to move to 11th grade (junior college) that movie made my late teens special. A guy who went crazy abt Hrithik Roshan in KNPH got to know he will be joining none other than Mr. Bachchan & SRK in K3G which also had Jayaji, Kajol n Kareena you must be living under a rock to not love this cast, whats in the movie is a question not even asked. N you go into your single screen balcony and watch the visuals unfold was special. The houses, the sets, the dance routines, the locations. It was all so speacial! Tears still roll down when you see Aman dying in the penultimate scene of KHNH, Rohit was as cool as he was funny and Naina was Nai..Naaa..(hear Rohit saying "why are you saying Naina Naina?)! And as Mr. BR says he did change with time with movies like MNIK & ADHM, so he is doing fine. This guy is a big part of my life and people who were born around that time.
This man thinks south cinema starting exploding in 1980's or so, and until then there was 'no other option' than Hindi cinema. So uninformed! Totally living in a bubble! Telugu and Tamizh cinema were a HUGE success even in 1940's. Back in 1950's, the classic Mayabazar collected as much money from two states as Chalti ka naam gaadi collected from the entire country! These bollywood people live in a bubble and grossly undermine things they are not exposed to! They overrate Hindi cinema greatly! A superhero fighting evil is no template created by Hindi cinema - it existed in South even in black and white films. (Edited to add:-) Salim Javed had a certain template of cinema and there are many current writers influenced by it, but it is foolish to think that is the only template. There are several South Indian old films much before 1970's in which a superhero goes killing an evil villain making the film a huge hit. A normal proper Google search will give the information. I wish he knew he did not know!
For his this attitude we Hindi people hate and boycott his movies. He always dumb starkids, and he even mention in one interview that new talent have no handsome looks so he scared to launch them.
Karan Johar with his elitist attitudes again. Still doing his "Punjabis are loud, how funny" movies. He couldn't handle the fact that someone said that movies must appeal to a Rickshaw Puller to a Rich man is a legit point. He cannot make those films doesn't mean other people in Bollywood aren't capable of it. See the cinema of Anurag Kashyap and many more. He still blowing up Alia's stock coz he knows if a no name person does his movie he will be exposed for what a mediocre director he is. He positioned himself as the spokesperson of Hindi Cinema somehow. Please invite some other people from Hindi industry. He knows about the history of Bollywood doesn't mean he knows the future too.
The guy is a businessman. He relies on Ormax media surveys to write plot points for his movies, that shows how shallow he is as a creative person! He inherited a production house, so had to take on the role of creative head.
Well i agree with rest of your points But its not compulsory that the film should appeal from rickshaw puller to rich people Yes the emotions should be felt by everyone But otherwise its not compulsory
4:50 Look at the contribution of the Khan family in the Hindi cinema. First father Salim khan changed the screenplay writing process. Then son Salman changed it with MPK and Dabangg. They’re the true representative of Hindi masala genre
I have been watching movies regularly for the past 40 years. I can say that of all the Indian Languages only in TELUGU CINEMA you can see HINDUTVA and Respect to Hindu Dharma. Traditionally Telugu Cinema has been culturally rich and beautifully represented Sanatana Dharma & BHARATIYA SANSKRITI in various movies from 1940s onwards up till 1980s. From 1980s onwards Telugu Cinema became Mass Masala Entertainment. But even in 1980s , KALATAPASVI Vishwanath Garu made Cinematic Masterpieces like SHANKARABHARANAM , SAGARA SANGAMAM , SWATI KIRANAM , SWATI MUTHYAM and SUVARNA KAMALAM.
KJ always understand movie business at its core values he has deep insights & knows which flims Will work on which mediums but he is never told straight to the face of the star
It's sometimes sad because actors like Pankaj Tripathi and Vijay Raaz are so much more talented than all those leading ladies and men in bollywood but still don't get scripts written well for them and no recognition... They play small roles in few movies.
After hearing KJo, im worried what will happen to Hridayam in Hindi.. it was a well rooted college story and then a coming of age drama.. Bollywood will make it into some hi-fi non realistic bollywood masala movie. Im shocked to hear him talking about Rohit Shetty. I have no idea what is in Rohit Shetty movies!!!
I can hear this man speak forever. He is so smart and really am bothered by the fact that he has been targeted. Keep strong Karan. There will be a time that people will talk of your brilliance. From where to where you’ve taken Dharma.
