Karanga: Calling of the Spirits

Come this way, these are the canoes (that travelled from Hawaiki - but doesn't explicitly say that part, it's inferred because the Waka she then listed are those that brought us here), Tainui, Te Arawa, Tokomaru, Takitimu, Aotea, Mataatua, Kurahaupo, Ngatokimatawhaorua).

It is not only addressed to the manuhiri/visitors but the spirits that they bring with them. When you are bringing someone on your own marae you have your ancestral spirits with you (some of which are the ones that occupy that space) sonthe karanga is sort of like your invite to enter from both the living and the dead of that Marae. You generally cannot enter if you haven't been given a karanga of some description without disrespecting the spirits of that place (maybe not always, I can think of instances where people didn't mind so much but not often).

I forgot to explain why that was relevant... She might for instance be telling the visitors (alive and dead) who was welcoming them on. A guess but she could be welcoming on behalf of a mixed Maori group which is why you might mention all of the ancestral waka.
