Visitors to Karangahake Gorge can enjoy
interesting views and a memorable experience exploring the
disused gold mining tunnels as well as the remnants of the stamper battery near Waihi. The gorge offers a window on New
Zealand’s past social and cultural identity.
Video and stills taken on a road trip over to Waihi with my foster sister.

Take a look at the remains of gold mining, the rippling waters of the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta
rivers and the massive geological upheaval that has
resulted in the landscape you see today. This place has been
transformed by the development
of mining technology and the
industrialisation of the country
in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries.
There are cycling and walking tracks following the old mining railways which include narrow dark tunnels and truss bridges over the river.
Don't miss the amazing Owharoa Falls - an easy walk even for seniors.
Unfortunately I was there on a rather dull day, but well worth a stop on your way along SH2 .
So much history in a small area, here is a link to the the DOC site www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-rec...

What an amazing area, great driving experience. It's hard to believe all that crushing done by the stampers. The waterfall is lovely. Thanks for taking us along 💯👍👍😎

Hi, thanks a lot. Yes that seems a huge amount of rock - most of it coming from a mine in Waihi a few km to the east. That’s now been made open cast and they are still dragging gold out !!!

Thanks Anna, it would have been good to spend more time here but I was actually on my way to the next town to visits friends. Some year back I did walk the tunnels with their wet raw rock hewn faces and complete the darkness.

Hi Chris- loved joining you for this road trip! Beautiful lush green trees and plants along the way. Interesting rocks and road cuts too… cool bridges over the highway. Wow, there must have been a lot of mining there- that stamper was huge. Nice history information …. beautiful river and waterfall, very peaceful and inviting! 👌☀☀ - Jen 😄

Hi Jennifer , not the best weather the day I went through and I wasn’t 100% happy with the in car video , I’ve just got a polariser for my action cam so that might help 😀. Truckloads of early NZ history in the area. The original mine at Waihi has been open cast and its a massive hole in the ground right next to the town. 👍

Well from here it looked great! The mining history is really interesting… I’m not sure we learn much about mining history in school, though it’s an important part of economic history. 👌@@Chris-NZ

Thanks Peter, sorry for the late reply I had been using Studio to find the unanswered comments but noticed not all of them seemed to make it to the videos and if they did I couldn’t edit out typos . It’s a pretty historic area in the gorge and of course historically connected with the gold mining in Waihi (my last video) . There is a biking and walking track on the opposite side to the road and same side in parts using an old rail route.

Well done. I have seen the river as a raging torrent. The train ride is a bit boring. It's a shame they didn't replace the track on what is now the walking track.

Hi, interesting comment on the train, I’ve never done it and every time I go past it hasn’t been working which is a bit off given the degree of signposting it has. Perhaps I’ll give it a miss and I agree it would be a hell of interesting if it was put back in those dark walking tunnels 😀
