Visitors to Karangahake Gorge can enjoy
interesting views and a memorable experience exploring the
disused gold mining tunnels as well as the remnants of the stamper battery near Waihi. The gorge offers a window on New
Zealand’s past social and cultural identity.
Video and stills taken on a road trip over to Waihi with my foster sister.
Take a look at the remains of gold mining, the rippling waters of the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta
rivers and the massive geological upheaval that has
resulted in the landscape you see today. This place has been
transformed by the development
of mining technology and the
industrialisation of the country
in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries.
There are cycling and walking tracks following the old mining railways which include narrow dark tunnels and truss bridges over the river.
Don't miss the amazing Owharoa Falls - an easy walk even for seniors.
Unfortunately I was there on a rather dull day, but well worth a stop on your way along SH2 .
So much history in a small area, here is a link to the the DOC site www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-rec...
