The man who plays Terry Silver is an actual Martial Artist and a Stunt Man/ Fight Choreographer in Hollywood. He had retired as an actor years ago, but he has been involved as a choreographer with Cobra Kai since a couple seasons before they convinced him to reprise the role of Terry Silver.
Yeah, I never understood this initially with the original films how everyone was cheering for Daniel and Miyagi while he's abviously a mad genious planning his worldwide Dojo-Dictatorship and Kobra Kai just tries to stop him to save humanity The only person I can remember actually seeing it the right way around was Barney Stinson, because he's awesome
I’m so glad Seth said it: Karate has a lot of take downs. This is shown in different bunkai of any kata, when practiced and applied properly. Also, Tanner (Robbie) and Jacob (Eli/Hawk) are actual martial artists who have done Muay Thai and TKD. So they definitely know what to do
Let’s not forget the true martial artist - Thomas Ian griffith (terry silver) he is a tae kwon do 3rd degree black belt , kenpo karate black belt , has trained in kickboxing , wrestling and fencing. And Zabka (Johnny) is a 3rd den green belt
A lot of the younger actors look a lot better now in terms of their technique but I want to give a special shout out to the actress that plays Sam. Early in the show here karate was really bad, it was very obvious that she had never had anything to do with martial arts before. But in the later seasons and especially season 5 she looks SO MUCH better. It's obvious that she's taking it seriously and really putting in the work it takes to learn something like that, and she deserves a lot of credit for it.
How can you tell from choreographed fight scenes ? He’s said in a interview that he’s mainly done dance and 6 months of Muay Thai. Most the cast haven’t learnt martial arts and just come from dance
@@thestruggler340 I can usually tell if the actors have some formal training when watching fight scenes in movies or TV shows. Good choreography definitely helps to hide the flaws in the actors technique, but I can, with a fair degree of certainty, often tell whether someone has trained or not. In Cobra Kai, I'm confident that the actors that play Hawk and Johnny Lawrence have actual martial arts skills that go beyond stunt/choreography training. Watch Steven Seagal's earlier films, for instance. The Aikido looks "legit" (or as legit as Aikido can look) as far as the trips, throws, and hand fighting/parrying, but his punches and kicks are straight garbage. No chamber, no pivot or rotation, just ugly ass striking. Same applies to grappling scenes: it drives me nuts seeing someone "choke" someone out on screen when the actors hand placement and grip is all wrong. It's like watching a movie with a military theme with my buddies that were in the armed forces: they can't avoid pointing out when the stuff they are seeing on screen is incorrect.
@@isaacyeon6334 you can’t be a decent martial arts unless you pressure test something and have done it for a number of years so to say they are a talented martial artist is ridiculous, if you are a dancer learning fight choreography is a piece of cake but learning how to put power in your kicks and punches, learning how to avoid and counter learning good technique and learning combos all comes from hard work and training and pressure testing. The most you can say is he has potential to be a to be a good fighter but to straight up say he’s a talented martial artist is just plain wrong
@@TheElbowMerchant you are right that William Zabka has done martial arts as he went on to learn and even become a teacher of tang soo do after the original karate kid and Jacob Bertrand did taekwondo for a couple years. Thomas Ian Griffith has done karate for a number of years also but the rest of the main cast are mainly just dancers. I agree Aikido doesn’t really work in the real world and is just flashy I’m also not a fan of point karate and taekwondo as they tend to teach bad habits from trying to only go for a quick point and grappling scenes also drive me crazy.
After seeing this, they’ve definitely improved the athleticism since I last watched it. The kicks are much more crisp and they don’t use as much slow motion to hide slowness.
With the body going limp thing, it's pretty out there, but, I'll defend this. It gives the show this very dangerous and mysterious thing that could be used as some good suspense. What would happen if Terry Silver ends up learning this technique? You know how dangerous he is now. Imagine if he knew it. How would Danny boy defend against it? Plus, I don't mind a bit of fantasy element in shows.
@@youreverydaylemonfriend560 let’s just hope they don’t get tooo pedantic with the flying FLYING kicks, because those can sometimes just be too fantastical for me so I sympathise with ya.
Thomas Ian Griffith is one of the most underrated action / martial arts stars of the '90s! I would love to see Seth react to more of his movies and fight scenes!
You should react to Avatar the last Airbender fight scenes, the styles are based on forms of karate, and the character, Ty Lee also does the pressure point attacks
A lot o them are based around different forms of Kung fu. Water is Tai Chi, Air is I believe Ba Gua Zhang, Earth was Hun gar, and I forget fire. But the way they use the martial arts with the bending is really cool.
@@ajshiro3957 Yes, a lot o them are based around different styles of Kung fu, which either influenced karate directly or it's ansestor form influenced karate
Air - Baguazhang and Xingyiquan Water - TaiChi (The swamp style is a mix of TaiCHi with the standard Earthbending style) Earth - Hung Gar (Standard) and Southern Praying Mantis (Toph) Fire - Northern Shaolin (standard) and Southern Dragon Claw (Sun Wariors)
Love your cobra Kai reactions! Finished watching season 5 a couple days ago. Hope to see season 5 reaction soon too.. They really had some incredible fight scenes and some were definitely more brutal. There were more fight scenes in general in season 5.
the scissor sweep takedown was the most fun move I ever learned in Shaolin Kempo. I can't imagine ever actually using it for self-defense, though.. LOL
Thanks for the your reaction, Kobra Kai is using Tang Soo Do which I think is quite well done here in some parts but the LaRusso (Miyagi) style should basicly look like more the Shito-Ryu style fundamentally based on Fumio Demuras part in The Karate Kid.
Correct me if I'm wrong, karate in general is a very versatile martial art, it includes punches, kicks, takedowns, grappling, weapons, a lot of things. I'm going off of memory here, I think the Japanese government promoted more of the kata, punches and kicks side of karate because boxing had gotten popular in Japan in the "ye olde days", when American culture and modernisation was making the rounds in Japan.
6:25 on this point of numb arm/ fake pressure point stuff. I have seen 1 persons arm go slack. Standard point sparring with protective gloves foot wear and helmets. A Brazilian dude who played soccer (at a college level) was training with us and was sparring a beefy girl (not fat, think farmer jacked lady). He threw a round house and she threw up her guard and it looked like she stopped the kick just fine, 1 or 2 seconds pass maybe she tried to through a punch but her arm drops and she can't lift it tries to keep on, but taps out within 1 minute. Come to find out he broke her Humerus. I don't think I've ever seen such brutality with my owns eyes before or since. He felt so bad he quit when he found out.
I’m somewhat amazed. I literally did exactly what you described when I discovered this was a second channel. I’d say you were somehow watching me but you recorded days before I did it…. Must be karate magic.
Fun fact: the actor of Robbie (tanner buchman) wanted to do allot of his own stuff he learned. He trained in both Muay Thai and some version of karate and kind of mixed them.
Love the reactions to cobra Kai fight scenes, huge fan of your channel and the show. You should react to season 5 that just dropped, a lot of great fight scenes.
Peyton List is the same age as me. I've had a crush on her since she was on Disney. I definitely don't thirst over the character though. Just the actress.
Canelo does the arm thing, but with brute force and repetion hiting the biceps. There is a moment in the fight were the oponent can't keep the arms up because the biceps is so swollen
The throw is a fireman carry and that other one is a scissor takedown, not to be confused for the scissor sweep from guard. I loved this breakdown video! 😊
I have seen comments calling Cobra Kai fight scenes campy and over choreographed. I guess people would rather see 750 Cuts in a 1-minute fight scene with the camera shaking all around like it's in an earthquake. Personally, I like to actually see the moves and the actors doing them, rather than watching a fight scene, being confused about who is doing what, and then needing to take some Dramamine after.
Haha. Thank you for that sensei Seth. I just started the video and realized I wasn't subscribed then that little disclaimer happened that you explained it's your second channel.
I'm a really huge fan of that Johnny Vs. Daniel fight so much personality and character is shown through how their styles clash. It shows that Johnny's formidable because he's fearless and adaptable. His arm was disabled and he immediately had an answer for it. I also applaud the choreography for finding two moves to land at the same time like that that not only look cool when they collide because it's not just two punches, but also pretty in-character for both of them. Johnny is seen as the aggressive one, striking first, bar fights. It makes sense that he would do some flashy punch while Daniel goes for a relatively safe crescent(?) kick while also trying to evade. It ended in a tie because as much as we want to know who would win we really don't, y'know? It's like Batman and the Joker. The fun of their dynamic is that they oppose each other and drive each other to do better.
They are just white belts who just wear black belts in tournaments for the looks, I think that in season 1 they lie to get to the tournament. Plus on the og movies daniels black belt is a stolen one
@@First_last988 Which makes no sense. In the 84 movie you see Cobra Kai has ranks, in between black and white, at the tournament. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sj6R4nkotKI.html In this scene here, you see a non-black belt, brown belt Cobra Kai student (although if it was actual Tangsoodo, it'd be a red belt, and the black belt in Tangsoodo is midnight blue not black)
The way to pull off a flying scissors in sparring is to put your left hand on their shoulder and push down while you jump into the scissors. Aim for their waist not their knees when you scissor.
I do not like how you predicted that I was going to scroll down and notice the channel and hit the subscribe button almost hte same time as you did in the video, Sensei. Chill on the ESP. :)
Every tournament I've reffed for, we always had three and you look down and close your eyes to call points so you can't be biased from seeing the other refs
I love this clip of yours Sensei Seth. I do a bunch of fight scene analysis for my own club (am a Wing Chun guy though) and love your breakdowns. Our whole club are big fans of Cobra Kai too. Would love to see your thoughts on season 5 fight scenes. Please get one of those out as soon as you can. And I'm subscribed so don't kick me 🤣
Hey I finally made it on your channel.... as a background sensei from the tournament lol. Everyone from the show was great to work with, Payton List even took the time to video chat with my daughters!
Yeah I got a call from one of my friends asking if my dojo had people that would want to go. A few days later we where heading down to Georgia for two weeks! It was a pretty awesome experience all around
I don't know what was better, you fighting yourself or your skepticism about your own injury. I'm ready to subscribe to Sensei Seth Reacts To Sensei Seth.
Sensei Seth can you do a video where you break down the fight scenes in The Raid, The Raid 2 or The Night Comes for Us? Those movies have some of the sickest choreography and very high skilled actors and stunt doubles
I'd really like to see the choreographer encourage advancing/retreating footwork with all the punch/parry stuff, it would give it just that extra pinch if dynamism and some realism (you can say they got out of range, rather than they just stayed out of range) without needing to be that much more complicated
My Sensei, Matsuda Shinji helped give advice on the first season of Cobra Kai. I also believe he is one of the referees in one of the episode. Great man, amazing Sensei.
did you see UFC's Chris Barnett have an adverse reaction in the middle of the 1st round, while the org's doctor and commentators ignored the fact half his face was suddenly dead, and kept the fight going!? SMH --- Is still alive (a couple of weeks later)?
That kick that Daniel did to Johnny when Johnny did the backfist and they knocked each other out at the same time when they were fighting, that kick Daniel did, I’ve only seen ITF Taekwondo practitioners do it, I think they call it twist kick, I’m sure others do it, I’m not an expert and haven’t seen all martial arts practices but so far I’ve only seen it in ITF, maybe Kungfu
It is indeed a move we do, Pitura Chaggi I think? Twisting kick. Now in most of our Tuls or practise we train it as a low kick or middle kick i.e. target the knee of inner thigh or the midsection. It is also trained high section but not as often
I would also point out that if they are calling them by their character's name.... they likely don't know the name of the actress so they use the only name they know for the woman in question. I would further point out that while I do not approve of molesting young girls and such it should be noted that until fairly recently in Earth's history many of these "Girls" would have been considered adults and of marrying/breeding age. Again... not saying it's ok to mess with little girls... what I AM saying is maybe the only reason they are considered to be young girls is because society now says they are... when historically many of these Girls would have been married off and starting families. Either way the actresses are young adults so nothing taboo there.
Expanding on why you don’t really get hurt in the air. When you’re in the air you aren’t able to increase force. You can’t push off of anything. So when you’re launching of the ground there’s a large force then you’re actually decelerating in the air then lending you have impact. So whatever you’re doing in the air is a result of grater forces you exerted on the ground.
03:23 this is a modern day Kata Guruma (shoulder wheel) in Judo, since the traditional way that goes like a wrestler fireman carry is no longer legal under the current IJF rules because you can no longer grab the legs, so they came up with this variation that looks like a back carry throw somehow.
The leg stop is referred to as "Checking" at least in Kung Fu, and if you get it right and their weight is moving forward you can get the person to plant on their face.
One thing I love about this show’s karate is that they play off each other, specifically Daniel vs Johnny. 7:53 they started off the fight with Daniel-D and Johnny-O, but then they switch it up
Sensei Seth so you don't get copyrighted you should re enact the fight scenes, playing all the characters at once! that'd also show them you could replace any of their actors if the need arised 🤣
the funny thing about the finals fight of season 4 is that jacob bertrand and tanner buchanan (the actors for hawk and robby) acually had a bit of competition between themselves as they were the best at martial arts between the actors. and I forget if it was in the filmings of season 2 or 3 where they had a sparring match to determine "who is the best" between them too. but I dont think they ever said who actually won. so this season 4 fight seemed like a nod to the actors own "rivalry"
Lol I was going to say since Miguel has a previous injury that could actually happen in the air because your. Thought your right that if you don't have any issues then it usually when you land and your body doesn't absorb the impact that some thing goes wrong.
The part with the pressure point shutting down a limb, I've never seen anything like that except in the UFC (Chito Vera vs Sean O'Malley, Mighty Mouse vs Henry Cejudo, Anthony Smith vs Jimmy Crute) where they will calf kick their opponent that hits a specific nerve. I think its the peroneal nerve?
