I think this is called a reverse punch. It is a karate style technique I've been using with a lot of success even in non-karate sparring. Give it a try and go subscribe to Sensei Seth!

@@QuantumPyrite_88.9 It depends. If the person is a newbie or just a hobbyist. Then yeah. My cousin who is a 2nd Dan Black belt at that time with amateur boxing experience had fucked up a well-known known thug in our village. There are many eyewitnesses who've seen it. We live in a rural place and few people could buy expensive camera and Cell Phone with Camera was not invented yet, Nokia 3315 was the most famous CP back then. So there is no video I could show everyone. But a lot of people saw that fight because it happens during afternoon at about 5:00 pm near the basketball court. Every afternoon a lot of locals come out to watch basketball but their attention were shifted when they saw my cousin and a well-known thug nicknamed Antot who is now at his 50's and crippled, started to fight. Antot got fucked up. Went home to grab a knife and came back to plaza, but my cousin is gone and the next week travels back to Manila to look for a job and of course avoid a possible fight again with Antot.

The reverse punch is one of my favorite punches to throw in sparring, especially if you establish a strong kickboxing/muay thai pattern beforehand. Switch it up, land the reverse punch, and then shout "HI-YA!" 9/10 out of ten, your opponent will cry. (Results may vary)

Hey Mike, you should do a lesson on the "Blitz" in Karate, which is probably one of the only useful techniques in point sparring with a real world application.
@haffoc
@haffoc 4 года назад
In his 1975 book 'Winning Tournament Karate," Chuck Norris suggested a couple of things that should enable you to execute this attacking reverse punch and then be in position to make a follow up attack. 1) before you lunge, bring the rear foot to the front foot, then push off in the lunge. This will give your lunge much greater distance. 2) don't leave your rear foot behind, which makes your stance really long, but instead drag that rear foot along behind the advancing front foot. This will result in a shorter stance that gives you enhanced ability to execute a follow on technique.

In most Styles it is called "Gyaku Tsuki" which is translatable as "Reverse Punch", yes. But the thing is: It is just the punch with the rear hand, so it is the "cross"-version of Karate, while the punch with the leading hand is "Oi Tsuki" (or Jun Tsuki if you feel more Goju Ryu).
@davidriddell5573
@davidriddell5573 4 года назад
Small point on terminology: Oi is stepping in this context. Choku-Zuki is forward side punch. "Oi-zuki" is a stepping Choku-zuki, whereas "Oi-gyaku-zuki" would be a stepping reverse punch. I don't know why it's different, I only know enough Japanese to know how bad I am at it
@FredKuneDo
@FredKuneDo 4 года назад
@@davidriddell5573, Choku Tsuki is just the punch itself. If you are standing in a stance with no foot leading, like Kiba Dachi/"Horsestance", both punches are "Choku Tsuki". Oi-Tsuki means "Same side punch" while Gyaku-Tsuki means "reverse side punch". Yes, most of the time an "Oi Tsuki" comes with a step forward, but not always. It is really just the question which side is "same side with the lead leg" and which side is the "reverse side". There is no such thing called an "Oi-Gyaku-Tsuki".
@davidriddell5573
@davidriddell5573 4 года назад
Fred Groeger I was incorrect. I went back to my textbooks for confirmation. Kizami zuki is same side. Oi zuki is literally “lunge” or “pursuing” punch. It’s described as “an embodiment of the choku-zuki with foot movement”
@FredKuneDo
@FredKuneDo 4 года назад
@@davidriddell5573, now it gets complicated. Yes, you are right: In Kumite you will do an "Oi-Zuki" always with a step. Most often with a lunge forward, but also backward (although this is not so common).ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J3lntW546Kw.html But "Kizami" does not mean "same side". It means something like "carving" or "shredding". And unless a Kizami Zuki is a lead hand punch, the definition is more about the "jab"-like, short traveling, because it is thrown from your "Kamae". If you would throw a Gyaku Zuki, pulling back your lead hand while doing it, then punch with the lead hand, it would not be a "Kizami Zuki" for example, because of the preloading.

Try throwing a reverse punch with your right hand (your back hand). It should come back quicker then it goes out. You can use it going backwards as well. Chuck Lidell uses it very effectively. Target is the head.

Back when i was training, one of my training with roots in TKD was to use fighting stances(long & short) as a springboard to close and lengthen distances just above the floor/ground. Close enough that at first I tripped many times on the ball and heel of my feet. The benefit being able to move without giving away too much information of where I was moving to and do. Only in sparring training a few times, I would use this to move forward but just past their side. By the time they realised I was no longer in front of them, I would be at an approx 45 degree angle behind them and tap their inner thigh with the flat of my foot. Always a tap. Nobody wants to lose a thigh or femur during sparring. I agree with no style. Find a style to develop your roots from then traverse across styles to find what works best for you. I saw you on Jesse's page.

That rear-hand straight to the body has been used in traditional western boxing for ages. Can really sap your opponent’s strength. The follow up blow is a lead hand hook to the jaw. The body shot is a great counter to a lazy jab. Jack Dempsey used this combination from an orthodox stance. Back then, it was referred to as a “right under the heart, left hook to the head”.

A surprisingly effective follow up to reverse punch (against a more aggressive opponent) is a short shuffle step back and a jab. Basically baiting them with the heavy reverse punch and let them run their face into your fist. Not great on someone who can keep their head in a fight. But I've had it work more than not.

Oh man. I had a few thoughts. Had to do the motion just to get a better idea. But you could lead hook to the head(with force or just make him raise his hands) and follow with the left uppercut to the body or left hook to the body. Lol. After the punch, you could sidekick the back of the knee or calf. Either just a push, or slam your weight into it. You could do that back trip takedown you showed in a previous video. You could grab for a single leg after the punch. Just a few thoughts. lol.

I mean use your legs then just pop the chin straight up as you're driving up with your legs. Come right down with a short straight right on the guy's chin sticking up in the air. Ok I'll finish watching now. If you guys say the same thing boy will I feel stupid.
