KARATE VS BOXING: BEST LECTURE BREAKDOWN!

NOTE, READ BEFORE COMMENTING! For sure much depends on the PERSON using the method. My point here is to point out where Karate goes and went wrong regarding other styles including Boxing. Here I am referring to APPROACH! I have done BOTH and know the strong points of both approaches. If you do not, you should listen and learn. Lastly, I refer to Karate as it was taught in Okinawa and how it was meant to be taught. TRUE KARATE is made of these elements:
1) NE-WAZA (GRAPPLING)
2) NAGE-WAZA (THROWING)
3) ATEMI-WAZA (VITAL POINT STRIKING)
4) SHIME-WAZA (CHOKING)
5) KANSETU-WAZA (JOINT LOCKING)

As always very insightful and accurate analysis. As a life long karate practitioner both traditional okinawan and bare knuckle knockdowns styles I can completely agree with your viewpoints. Over the last four months I've taken up kick boxing out of my local MMA gym to supplement my training and just like you said I've found that my biggest problem is attempting to deal with the sheer volume of punches coming from those trained in boxing the same way I might against a karateka, it's simply not possible. However again as you've stated I've noticed whenever I connect solidly with my opponents they're always surprised at the amount of force coming from what was a seemingly short or un committed strike especially on the counter or retreat. Finding a balance has been an interesting ride and continues to be a fun and challenging experience.

Speaking of Mayweather, almost all of the people talking about him now didn't follow him until about several years ago.Up until he fought Oscar De la hoya, almost all of his wins came way by Ko/tko.Like you said,he focused more on precision and power, which is why he was one of the accurate strikers in western boxing ever.Another boxer whom used a karate technique probably w/o realizing it is Roy Jones jr.He used to dart in with his reverse punch and he didn't telegraph it.People swore it was him being super athletic because he played basketball when it wasn't really the case.

Love boxing, love Karate... competed in Shotokan Karate and crossing over into boxing now... I see alot of my karate habits haunting me but there are some benefits... . but also keep in mind... you nullify the fighter, not the discipline. The biggest thing I took from competitive karate coaching is intercepting an attack... beating you to the punch backwards and forwards, body and head. We avoided blocking all the time... we were coached to punching through your punch... downfall is... the point system.

Sayf, those of us who understand the history of boxing and acknowledge how the sport has developed and changed based on rule changes from Bare knuckle period to the Marques of Queensbury rules and forward greatly appreciate your knowledge. In fact I have recorded to disc many of your training tutorials and stories related to boxing technique which have a direct application to training boxers (Philosophy) if you will. You are appreciated by me, more than you know. Thank you for your knowledge. Michael Coppola.

I started boxing around 9 years old in The Boy's Club. Fought outside of the gym a lot. Jumped A LOT. Did Shotokan starting at 14 at a hard core school with a bunch of killers in the lineup. Some guys were local street legends. My boxing helped me a great deal when Shotokan sparring , even against adults. The intuitive merger of the two has carried me through a lot of things in my career that revolves around conflict situations. I say, why pick one? Get your elusiveness (especially head movement and pivoting) and in-fighting punches and angles boxing. Get your kicks, gritty hockey shirt pulling, stand up joint locking and other stuff from real hard core karate. The two are great. Again, why choose just one? For reference, I was born in the mid 70's.

I think you should start every video of with a pre recorded clip of you saying if you're soft you're going to get your feelings hurt please leave now hahaha . Love the video great insight karate is more about a person's mindset going into a fight then it is the techniques that they use although they are very important as well

Great point My Pops used the Sweep on my uncle who was a damn good Boxer when they were playing around showing me some moves. Then My Uncle may he continue to Rise In Power would say okay no Bruce Lee his nick name for martial Arts🤣🤣My Pops would say straight boxing Hell Nah🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I knew at like 12 years old it was advantages in both.
@lsporter88
@lsporter88 4 года назад
Sounds like there are useful elements from both. But I agree that Karate was designed to disable or kill quickly in a Martial situation. The use of the legs in Karate adds a dimension that can't be discounted. However, adding the covers, slips, and uppercuts of Boxing make for a versatile fighter. Superior commentary.

I guess that's the kind of adjustment Bruce Lee made for Wing Chun. Instead of chain punches, aka volume, he went for more precision and power (I remember you saying in another video you didn't like chain punching much as well). That's also the Karate mindset. Another great video. Thank you.

I would dare say that back in the day even brothers who would slap box were deadly. Slap ti the face full contact bate knuckle to the body including elbows. After learning this style when i was introduced to the empty hand arts of Filipino Martial arts i tecall saying id already learned this!

Back in the day ive hit boxers in the FACE with traditional spinning back kicks. Youre so righr .real Karate is taight as a balls to the wall all or nothing to the death thing that ia very hard to deal with. Yiy feel luje youre fighting a kulling machine.

Youre taking about the kind of karate that was taught foe free because people werent willing to pay money ri get beat up the karate i learned in Harlem. Tradirional hard core fhetto karate is feightening if tiu never encountered ir. I recall fighting a gut using traditiinal karate where i was also using my KIAI and he went to peices. He felt disoriented frightened and disconnected. One of myvdojo mates uaed traditional karate right down to the so called impractical stances as his job as a bouncer on forty deuce back in the day

@TheUmmahFightCamp
@TheUmmahFightCamp 6 лет назад
Black King Of Scotland: In the US I do not really know. The schools that keep it close to real are usually associated with Kyokushin (Oyama karate, Ashihara, Enshin) They mostly punch to the body though. I will be doing something in the future. GW :)

TheUmmahFightCamp I've always respected Karate. When I was first introduced to it as a kid, I didn't have any knowledge of the different styles or variations of it, "Karate was just Karate to me." I do find that any dojo ran by ex cops, are you usually the more liget ones to train in, since they have some street fighting experience gained from their former occupation. Also, I'm wondering if you ever heard of the Black Kenpo Karate Federation, they're well known out here in the west coast.

This is very informative, the thing I took from this video the most is how you defined "Martial Arts" and that Martial arts are to fight to defend and kill. The context is important to understand. I've done a battlefield art for 10 years and its a weapon art with unarmed techniques. It will only work as an act of self-defense and battlefield or dueling situations due to swordsmanship etc, not for sport. I also do kickboxing so that I can work on my unarmed and can defend myself against a boxer or if I was in the ring. I know both have their strengths and weaknesses in their own context. Thanks for the quality content and putting things into perspective.

Very very very good stuff elder sayf! I study & practice boxing & I am aware of limitations in boxing versus other martial sciences. Even tho it's limited it's so very vast @ the same time which just keeps me amazed & in love with it. The simpleness & effectiveness is y Bruce lee felt it was necessary to incorporate it in jest Kune do( way of the intercepting fist in my Bruce lee voice lol!)I feel it can be used against other styles but u must be ready to adapt & modify things in certain situations as not to be overwhelmed by a style as a boxer is not used to dealing with. Cuz as u know boxers are more used to seeing other boxers as compared to other martial styles. I know that was long winded but it's something I keep in mind a lot. But my ? To u is how did eastern arts show up in western boxing? because I've noticed thru out the years there are subtle similarities.

@TheUmmahFightCamp
@TheUmmahFightCamp 6 лет назад
Andre Lewis: Karate has 5 components: Strikes, Throws, Grappling, Vital point striking and Joint manipulation. Kick boxing has become a generic term that includes Muay-thai, PKA and other rule layouts. I call Muay Thai, muay-thai because it deserves to be. other methods generally use hands and feet with little tie ups.

Good afternoon Coach/Sensei Saif. I subscribed to your channel last year and learned some great information. I particularly enjoyed this video. I started training in 1984 at age 18 in Harlem, New York. My first style was USA Goju aka Harlem Goju. My Sensei was Dave Thomas a student of Grandmaster Sam McGee who is the successor to the late Grandmaster Leon Wallace. Grandmaster Wallace was a student of Peter Urban. I am currently studying Okinawan Goju under Sensei Luis Morales in North Arlington, New Jersey. I presented my lineage to let you know I fully understand the information in this video. I love your teaching style and will attempt to incorporate some of your methods into my approach to teaching. Please continue this great and informative content. Osu!
