Kareem has said elsewhere that small, mobile centers, who could shoot and draw him away from the basket, gave him trouble. Reed fits the bill, Cowens and Dan Issel too.

Jerry West who played with Wilt and saw Kareem his whole career picks Kareem as the better player. In my opinion I’m taking Kareem as well because he can shoot free throws. Think about this. Wilt lost to Russell in the playoffs by a combined 9 points. If Wilt hits his free throws he wins all of those close games.

That is the delusion of youth. You think the guys from then were not as high quality as now and you are wrong. Better dribbling, better defense, played great offense. I think Shaquille O'Neill is great, but the idea that these guys couldn't play against him is ridiculous. Wilt Chamberlain was every bit as strong and athletic at Shaquille. He could bench 500 lbs, he ran and moved like the best today. Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Bill Russel, Bob Cousy, Connie Hawkins, so many greats that could do anything the guys today do. The only thing players do better than before is three pointers and that is because it was not a first line offense move that it is today. Before 1979, there was no reason to shoot from 22 feet. So no one did. After 1979, it was a end of game, or broken play option. Only recently has it become a first option line of offense.

Wholeheartedly agree with the preceding comments. I’ve watched NBA bb for nearly six decades and following the Lakers in particular, I would rank Shaq third in the succession of great Laker centers alone, behind Wilt & Kareem. Both were very skilled & athletic. Shaq is talented no doubt, but relied on his massiveness to dominate. He outweighed most centers by 100#. There’s no way he would score the points the young guy alluded to if he played in Wilt’s era, as there were other great big men like Bull Russell, Nate Thurmond and Willis Reed to name a few. But, having said all this, if Shaq and Kobe could have co-existed longer, they would have likely racked up a couple or few more rings.

Right before he was lost for all that time, in November of 1973 he held the stud Jabbar to 18 for 40 shooting in 86 minutes as the teams split. Jabbar was only able to shoot 45% against the 6'9" badly wounded Reed! In the 1974 playoffs his knees were so bad he averaged like 3.4 points and 2 rebounds in 11 playoff games. In the 1971 playoffs in game 1 of the Atlanta series Reed badly injured his shoulder tearing muscles and played with one arm for the rest of the 1971 playoffs. It's why he only shot 41% in the 1971 playoffs and the Knicks lost for the only time in 6 playoff series in a row to the Bullets in 7 games with the last game a 93 to 91 loss! After the series Wes Unseld admitted we knew that Willis badly injured and couldn't shoot and was used for his defense, rebounding, and to set screens. The Bullets went to the finals and lost to the Bucks for Jabbar's only NBA title without Magic Johnson! A healthy Willis Reed and the Knicks go back to defend their NBA title and beat the Bucks! If there was real medicine during the Reed era and he was able to play healthy to 35 like Russell or almost 37 like Wilt would of won 5 to 6 NBA titles! Bad medicine stopped Willis Reed! He played in 99 regular season games his last 3 seasons and yet somehow in the last 3 games of the 1973 finals against Wilt was able to play 96 minutes and scored 61 points with 33 rebounds and 10 assists shooting 54%. He was wearing the massive Lenox Hill Knee Brace on his left knee and yet was able to will his body to play 96 minutes in 3 games and be great! It was his second Finals MVP and NBA title! Remember in the 1970 playoffs over 9 games in a row before his early game 5 injury in the finals Reed scored 266 points had 122 rebounds and 30 assists shooting 53% against Alcindor and Chamberlain at 6'9"! In the first 4 games of the finals against Wilt, Reed had 127 points and 60 rebounds shooting 51%. How is 31.8 and 15 against Wilt in a team basketball share the wealth offense? Walt Frazier always said Willis could of easily been a 30+ average scorer but that wasn't how we played. He sacrificed for the good of his teammates! A healthy Willis Reed in the 1971 playoffs and Jabbar would of had no NBA tiltes until Magic Johnson!

Jabbar had the stats, Reed had the wins and in a big spot Jabbar didn't get it done. An example was when the Knicks came back from 18 down to win 87 to 86 on November 18, 1972, the Knicks mounted the largest comeback in NBA History. The Knicks closed out the game on a 19-0 run to defeat Milwaukee 87-86, after a fourth quarter when New York outscored the Bucks 29-16. If you watch the last 4 minutes, Marv Albert at one point says Jabbar and Reed in a battle inside as we see Willis muscling Jabbar. Jabbar went 0 for 6 with an airball sky hook with Reed leaning on him and an airball jumper with Reed leaning on him and Reed never took a shot but had 4 rebounds and an assist. This was the Reed wearing the massive knee brace just back after missing 71 games in 1971/72. Jabbar dominated the game by the numbers but in the clutch when it mattered Jabbar came up small and Reed held him to 0 for 6 in the last 4 minutes. Without knowing the entire game one would conclude boy Jabbar amazing and Reed big deal but then you say when the Knicks scored the last 19 points what did Jabbar do? The 0 for 6 was from 86 to 77. The clip doesn't show from the 86 to 68 point when the Knicks mounted the comeback. Jabbar was probably worse than 0 for 6 but they didn't show the entire comeback.

I'll take Labron over Bird every day and twice on Sunday (today), and I like Larry Bird. Labron drug some mediocre teams to the finals. Bird had a stellar team along side of him. McHale is a legit hall of fame player. Dennis Johnson was a fine player. The Chief was a very solid center, even got a season of Walton backing him up. I might even take Karl Malone before Bird. Tim Duncan is another great player. The mailman was a beast of a player. When the Joker gets done with his run, he will be in the mix somewhere.
