For service animals, I work at walmart. No one is required to ask someone 'anything' about an animal they bring in unless that animal is being problematic, and even then, we still don't ask if they're a service animal or not. We just ask them to remove the animal from the store. The little vests and jackets are not a requirement either. Also, service animals will jump on you or act hostile if you put their charge in danger. It is the service animal's literal job to care for and protect their human. If you attack their human, they aren't going to sit back and watch. And the officer is correct. A customer has no right to ask or take it upon themselves to question whether or not an animal is a service animal. If the business does not care that's the only thing that cares.

That airport one seems so bizarre to me. I'm from the UK and there are always signs that say any unattended luggage will be destroyed. That service dog one really got to me as I’m a diabetic with an alert dog who goes with me everywhere. The Karen was demanding proof which first off, there are no formal papers or anything like that in America for proof of a service dog, second only people working in an establishment and officers can ask two specific questions: “Is this a service dog” and “what is he trained to perform” and that is it. Thankfully the trainer I got my dog from gave us a card she makes for each dog she trains with a picture of the dog, their name, some info, and on the back a QR code that takes you to her website and often showing that works for proof in other places like Canada who do need papers or a card for proof. Either way this random Karen cannot ask any of these questions as she isn’t a worker in the store.

They cannot ask what your disability is. They cannot ask you to have the dog demonstrate the task. They cannot ask for proof/registration/certification because it does not exist under the ADA. Only 2 animals currently qualify as Service Animals: 1) Dogs 2) Some rare cases, miniature horses Cats, rats, hedgehogs, snakes, bunnies, turtles, fish, spiders, Guinea pigs; pigs, cows, non-miniature horses, ferrets or anything else you want to bring along, have absolutely zero claim to Service animal protections. Her, as a third party though? No right to ask as it’s not her property. The problem is that since there’s no official means of separating real from fake service dogs, that people now abuse the system to bring their pets everywhere and no one’s allowed to question it. It’s really frustrating, especially for people with legitimate service animals getting touched by entitled people who are now accustomed to being allowed to pet “service dogs” who are really just ESA or more likely, glorified pets.
