Anatoly Karpov was number one for almost 12 years and number two for 14 years,got about 2800 live rating,have been in top 12 at age of 50,and almost 2700 and in top 30 at age of 55.One of the greatest players ever-respect!
Fischer would have beaten him in '75. Fischer had a rating of 2785 in '72, Karpov's peak rating ('94) was 2780. Even Kasparov said Fischer would have beaten him, but beyond that who knows. Too bad Fischer was a nut job, otherwise he would have kept on competing and been the first to break 2800 barrier.
At 2:13 Qd5 was great. threatening mate and pealing off that H1 rook like it's nothing.....Karpov is positional player yes but still has immense tactical ability even at his age. One of the greatest players of all time and one of the nicest and most humble too. Mad respect the GM!
@CaptainSvy well... Kramnik actually defeated Kasparov in a 12-game match. Kasparov was unable to win even a single game from Big Vlad and lost two himself. Credit is due to Kramnik who is the only person ever to win a match against Kaspy.
I wish I could calculate a checkmate like that in a matter of seconds. Proves that playing someone at Karpovs speed is like playing Tiger Woods on the golf course. When you're at that level you know who on the planet is capable of beating you...and believe me its a very short list.
Chess is a very individualistic game. Chess players at tournaments aren't a very social bunch. Everyone who is serious about doing well is so preoccupied with winning their games, booking up and practicing that there is often little socializing between games and after. Chalk it up to the nature of the game and the tendency of chess players to not really be social butterflies to begin with. It's definitely a different culture than what you'd find at board game/card game tournaments IMO.
@TomValedro mmm not quite:D!for u see,it's not Karpov that chickened out...Anyway,it's a matter of taste,but i think Karpov would have won,really tight,but a win.
@applenick12345 What a ignorance. Kasparov is much younger than Karpov. Karpov was unbeatable at his prime. It is world order that younger dethrone older eventually.
Get tired from these Fisher Fans!!! "Fisher is the best, he would beat anyone and bla bla bla".... He was one of the best, may be the best one...but he is gone forever... the game is between Karpov and Bareev!!!! KArpov and Bareev!!! Not Fisher and Bareev, not Karpov and Fisher!!!! Analyze current game and stop talking shit about Fisher and how great he was....
