Karvachauth is an Indian festival celebrated mainly by Punjabi's and a few others also on the chauth tithi of the holy Kartik month. On this day, married women observe fast for the well-being of their husbands and their long life.
The starting of the day is marked by having a lite meal early in the morning (before the disappearance of the stars in the sky around 4 am.) This meal is called SARGI which contains 5 types of sweets(Meethi-matthi, sev-bundi, shakkar-para, laddoo, feeniyaan etc) which is offered by mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law.
After this meal, women observes a fast throughout the day and in the evening listens the Katha of karvachauth. After listening to the Katha, in the late evening, after the moon is seen the fast is broken after worshipping moon and offerings is also made and this marks the end of the fast. Once this is done, the husband feeds her wife with sweets and water.
This is how karvachauth is celebrated and is celebrated for the well-being, prosperity and long-life of one's husband.
