Sveiks from Chicago. This is such an amazing child song. I remember this from my childhood being a theme song for “Спокойной ночи, малыши», but Latvian version. 30 years later, I am listening to this song with my little one and she absolutely loving it. Thank you so much for such a great performance.
Hi! My great grandparents came from Latvian and settled in Chicago. Pa was the pastor of the First Latvian Baptist Church of Chicago in the 1930s and 40s. He was also blind. I barely remember my grandfather singing such songs in Latvian. He eventually forgot his Latvian and I so dearly wish to learn some of these songs and understand the words! Do you know how I could find the words and the translation into English? Or really, just the words in Latvian would be enough. I am used to singing in other languages. I really want to learn Latvian folk songs and children's songs! I sing in Irish, which is the language of my father's grandfather, but I learned Irish separately. As for Latvian, I remember hearing it as a small child and being so fascinated! I often pestered my grandfather to please speak Latvian! Everyone on that side of the family are singers and professional musicians, so my desire to visit the musical heritage of my Latvian side is deep. Thank you!
Mana delina milaka versija, klausamies katru vakaru jau ilgu laiku. Paldies.
My mother is half Latvian! The first time I ever realized there were "other languages" was when I was 2 years old and heard my grandfather speaking Latvian on the phone with his brother. I haven't heard the language in over 50 years. Over time, my grandfather forgot the language. I can't believe I found this beautiful singing in Latvian! How can I get lyrics with the English translation? I would love to learn some of these songs!
Translation (not intended to be word-for-word, but poetic, so it can be sung along) Sweet Sleep's resting, Sweet Sleep's waiting In the gard'n of flowers white Hushaby... hush-hush... Sweet Sleep is waiting In the gard'n of flowers white Pick a flower, Sweet Sleep bring it To my little baby’s room Hushaby, hush-hush... Sweet Sleep bring it To my little baby’s room Lightly, gently lay the flower By my little baby’s head Hushaby... hush-hush, lightly, gently By my little baby's head Zoom-zoom-zoom-zoom- rings the flower Gently Sweet Angel lifts my child Hushaby... hush-hush, rings the tiny flower Gently Angel holds my child Ov'r a lake and ov'r a river, Ov'r sweet meadow lush and green Hushaby... hush-hush, over a river Over sweet meadow green Angel lifts my tiny baby To the Sweet God’s little stars Hushaby... hush-hush, lifts my baby To the Sweet God’s little stars
Sveiks! Could someone help me? I have no one left in the Latvian side of my family who speaks the language, and I really want to find the words to this song so I can sing it! I can figure out how to translate it but I need the words in Latvian. I desperately want to learn old Latvian folk songs and children's songs!
