Great! I use pretty much the same interpretation for visualization during my solo practice of the kata. I like to use the very last movement(salute)in the kata to get behind the opponent and use as a face grab takedown. Or you can use one hand to grab the chin and the other to grab some hair. So easy, and so effective!

Love your work Chris. I have recently been working on a variation of this. My variation assumes that things have gotten hot very quickly and needs to be shut down immediately. It starts with a left handed shove to the chest followed by a swinging right hand and then a wild swinging left. My version has the left arm raise to intercept the swinging right, while I step in with the right upper cut. Assuming that the uppercut hasn't shut down the attack, I throw a left uppercut with the same movement that I throw up the right arm to anticipate his swinging left arm. Currently, I am only focussing on getting off 2 concussive uppercuts; nothing too fancy.

+Russell Bray That sounds pretty good Russell. If you can align all your applications to the principles associated with self-defence and the typical situations you'd come across then you're half way there! Thanks for the kind words and happy to hear you enjoyed the video :-)

So you’re not interpreting the Morote-Uke as a block (Uke) and more like Morote-Tzuki. Decades ago, i started pondering Morote-Uke as it is prominent in the Kata, but I had not seen anyone use it in Kumite nor any reasonable explanation in Bunkai. I thought the way we use the “supporting” hand doesn’t really provide support. I began to think that a major purpose of that hand was to allow the same side hip to turn toward the opponent. I changed that hand to an open palm to really provide support. The first time I tried it with a light application on an opponent, they went flying backwards and sliding across the floor on their back. Many years later, I demonstrated it with a Black Belt with the same 40-50 years experience as me. Again, he went flying across the floor on his back. He wondered why his Seniors never showed that application to him. I told him that they probably didn’t know the application, that no one showed it to me either, I made it up!

This is the first video I’ve seen where someone gives an application for the kosa dachi/kake dachi part! I have to be honest - I think I’m just a little disappointed by the kata itself. Your application for it made sense, but for the most part, it’s not a move that I would ever try to execute in reality.
