Yes she was. He was fortunate to have someone who spoke English so well. But he seemed to be navigating his way around quite okay, so all good. I hope he's back home looking at his lovely sword and remember his Japan holiday.
That’s store is heaven. Thanks brother! I was looking for a store to buy a katana for my Japan trip in summer. Love this ! Make a video about how you brought back to the states. Very cool !
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck to you and your move. I also will be relocating my family to Japan as soon as the Japanese border reopens. Stay tuned for more Japan footage soon enough
That’s cool that they let you hold and feel the weight of it. There’s a swords store where I stay that sell cheap functional katanas but they won’t even let me hold one or feel it just to check one out. They did that to me twice so I ended up buying online from people who actually wanna sell me something.
yeah I bought a Wakazashi (shorter version of the Katana) and had it boxed up and bubble wrapped. I was able to check it in with no problem with customs. I think the golden rule is that you cannot carry any sort of weapon into the plane. Just pray your sword does not get damaged in the check in process. great video and happy shopping!
As a collector, I would go CRAZY in that store. Now "shinken" ("live blades") either antique or modern, is a WHOLE different story, when trying to bring it over to the States. (De-registering it, Ministry of Cultural Affairs for export, and I think a bout a 20 day processing period). I'm not even sure, once the process is done, how you can even get it past Japan's airport customs. I get all of my antiques via registered mail and it takes about a month to receive it/them.
You sir, made the best choice 😉 I was in Japan December 19 to January 20. Went to Arashiyama and only found out about Tozando back in Tokyo 🤦🏽♂️ Thank you very much for making a long video and showing other things like tsubas. I need to get a katana when I go back.
Tozando is a good store. I was there in February of this year. I purchased a Yumi (longbow) from them and had it shipped back home. I also got to try on one of their sets of Armour and hold an original Yari (Spear). I noticed that you ducked through those arches in the display room upstairs so I'm guessing you are well over 6 feet tall as well as muscularly built, in which case those armours they have might not fit you as they made them to fit the average Japanese body type. No harm in asking if they make custom/tailor made armour next time you visit.
First off thanks for checking out my video, I appreciate the support. Getting around in Japan is a bit of a challenge in certain situations due to my stature; I am 6 ft. even but very broad so door frame gives me a fight almost everywhere in Japan lol. But asking about custom armor is a great idea, I don't know why it didn't occur to me that I wouldn't fit the pre-ready gear lol I would've learned the hard way.
@@affluentapproach1213 If you live on the continental United States and want a set of tailor made customised armour I would suggest Iron Mountain Armoury.
Update: I’ve bought my first katana on amazon it’s a wall hanger sword And it’s gonna look great on my shelf or wall or any place actually but one day I’ll buy myself a real katana like a full on battle ready full tang razor sharp and all that one day in the future if y’all wanna see the sword, I’m gonna do an unboxing on my channel THE ROWER so if y’all wanna check that out stay tuned I guess
Hi, do you have a video of your experience with customs when you flew back with it? I'm thinking of doing the same but want to avoid the hassle at the border. Thanks!
I know this post is 4yrs after yours, hang in there my man… you haven’t posted But, Congrats on your Iaito Purchase dude… I can tell from your enthusiasm, your want to learn the language, and your numerous travels that you appreciate the culture. I recommend since you bought an Iaito sword that you also take lessons in the Iaido Martial Arts if you have the ability, I think you’ll love it since it also helps w/ focus, clarity, some meditative aspects. It also teaches u different parts of the sword, the fittings, how to handle a sword, etc etc… keep up the good work!
I randomly found his channel today. Was shocked to discover from other comments that hes in jail rn for killing his wife. Youll find out more if you google his name. Very sad.
tozandoshop.com/ , My camera setup is the Sony a6300 with the 16-50mm f. 3.5-5.6, rode micro and manfrotto tripod. I am soon to upgrade my camera system tho, I wanna go full frame Sony
I just got my katana yesterday and been walking around the neighborhood waiting for the women to come flocking. At least that's what the salesman told me would happen when I bought it.
Thanks for sharing...I got to say I’m extremely curious on what it cost American dollars? I have numerous katanas, All battle ready, Forged from modern steel, Differentially Hardened clay Tempered with Hamon , Sharp as hell and great cutters, buyback they are made in China ..Mine cost between 150 and $300
These are practice swords, There are serious laws and regulations in japan about making and selling of Battle ready Katanas. and they are extremely expensive. We are talking $1000s
I'm not sure what you mean by mediums, are you referring to what metals they're made from? Also if they can be transported on plane varies depending on what country you're going to, check with your local and international flight authorities before attempting to fly with a sword. To America you can travel with them as long as they are sheathed, wrapped up and stored with your checked in luggage. TSA did inspect it upon arrive and took longer for me to get my luggage but the sword made it home safely!
I didnt price Tanto, Not quite sure. I did however purchase a couple higonokami as gifts to give to my relatives in the states, the were about $55 USDa piece.
Can you bring practice/decorative swords to the USA? How did you get it through customs? I'm seeing a lot of Japanese laws about not being allowed to carry a sword. Does that change when it's decorative or dull? Thanks!
Exactly right, because it is for decoration purposes and it is not sharpened it does not classify as a weapon. Customs opened the box and checked it but allowed it thru with no problems. when you buy the sword the shop gives you papers stating its purpose
@@affluentapproach1213 what if you don't have the papers? Or maybe if you bought an "iaito" on a second hand store? Hope you notice this coz it would be a very big help 😇🙌
day at a time my man, I am actually recording a fitness inspo video right now. I too got out of shape but I'm working extremely hard to bounce back. Check it out once I publish it. its dropping Jan. 1st
They did have throwing daggers and I almost purchased me a set, they had throwing stars too but I decided to get my family back home knives instead. Bought back gifts
@@affluentapproach1213 Looks like they had everything, very awesome opportunity to travel and experience such a cool store, I had a friend in 90s who was in the navy and stationed in Japan that bought a set of throwing knifes, an amateur could throw them and make them stick, but the finish in them was spectacular, I probably would of done the same and bought authentic cutlery knifes,
Bro. I bought a real Katana from the Tokyo Area in the 90's and brought it back to Canada. Now, when I fly. 100% of the time, my luggage is thoroughly inspected. If you Fly back with a Katana (real or not) and declare it on your customs form, you can expect to ALWAYS be scrutinized at the border. (I was in Japan in the 90's and still, to this day I can expect all my luggage to be separated from the masses for further inspection. Shipping it is 100% the way to go.
Good tip my guy, I will definitely ship next time. I received the experience I wanted and now I dont want to walk around with heavy items in my hands anymore lol
Those smaller “daggers” you were looking at were actually made for ritual suicide, And next time you should get a tanto which is the second sword samurai carry; also I don’t know if you know this but if you ever get a real katana you have to oil the blade to prevent rust.
