One of the greatest skaters of all time. Her choreography, technique, and artistry set her apart!! Tremendous athleticism!! The joy on her face says it all!!
Dang - this was so good. She did the moonwalk on skates , that’s just insanely awesome. I admire her choice , the choreography and the artistic quality of it .
I was around 12 when I happened to catch this electrifying performance live on tv, and I knew it then, I knew it very well that these was going to be one of those wonderous moments that will never ever forget.
Remember.....the Cold War and the Iron Curtain was still a Thing in 1988. So the Use of a Michael Jackson Song as an East German Athlete was something very Special!
Considering the 'seriousness' of Bizet for the olympic gold in the same year, just goes to show what versatility she had, and rhythm she had as an skate artist.
Незабываемая фигуристка! Мастерство, талант, темперамент! С ней было трудно соперничать. Тогда немецкая школа фигурного катания была в расцвете. Спасибо за видео!!!
You could already feel the wall falling in Berlin- a champion from East (GDR) performing on Michael Jackson song with such ease and joy was really something at that time. Even though- nobody could imagine that the end was so close ... And Katarina really is exceptional talent, personality and charm up until these days.
I was too young at that time to watch it, let alone understand the actual happening. Was this performance meant as an exhibition or was it part of her olympic programme over there?
It was a post Olympic competition exhibition. Katarina had won her second consecutive gold medal basically by playing defense against America's Debbie Thomas (who was leading going into the long program). The tactic worked, not only at the Olympics, but the World Championships a few months later. What made the exhibition interesting was because how much popularity women's figure skating was receiving during that time. Katarina vs Debi was quite a catalyst in achieving that popularity. Not to mention West Germany was still Communist at the time, and she skated to Michael Jackson. Back then that in and of itself was a big deal.
ohmixmaster Thanks a lot for your very detailed answer on my question. I was still a young child at that time. But I guess my father was very delighted to see a young Katarina Witt in action... I can't remember if my mother was that happy about him looking so "interested" at Witt's performance. Do you also know to tell me which one of these two champions was in your eyes the better one? Was it Katarina Witt or her American rival Debbie Thomas? Thanks again for your nice answer.
Your welcome. And yeah, your father was not alone, my teenage self along with pretty much every other man in the world was rather, how should I say, "captivated" by her...lol. In regards to who was "better" I would say Debi was the better athlete, but Katarina was the better performer and strategist.
ohmixmaster lol, I like your very polite way to describe your interest in Witt, apart from her excellent figure skating performance... you were "captivated" ;-). Seems as if I have missed two of the greatest female figure skaters , shame. But therfor we have youtube and such. I do ice-skate too, but I'm - at best - not a quarter as talented as Witt and Thomas were.
Oh, this is gold. No wonder she got Olympic gold that year. (I know this is the after-exhibit, and she got gold for another performance before this.) Superb!!! 💕🤗
Again and again and again, the more you watch from 1980's the clearer it becomes how much better 1980's is than any other decade ESPECIALLY the horrendous disgusting 21st century, everything was awesome, best cars, best music, best athletes, best olympics, best everything
Me at the age of 12 saw her live in karl-marx-stadt dancing to this great song by mj, it was unbelivable in that year bevore everything changed in germany, she was absolutly amazing, will never forget that night - kati you are our best girl, stay healthy and all the best for you
1988 - the berlin wall was still up but kati could do this already. the system was crumbling. the comrades allowed kati to do a michael jackson. a few years before this would not have been possible yet. - a year later the berlin wall fell and kati was a free girl to dance to whatever she liked on ice shows all round the world. freedom and democracy is the most valuable thing in life.
Such a stupid comment! Michael Jackson was viewed in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) as a black Guy, who had successfully made it to the top of the music industry - with critical songs against rassism. Don't be trapped in your anti-communist biased thinking.
Freedom yes, the most amazing thing, true freedom though, which is not found in any of the political systems on earth yet, perhaps the human nature is the very reason behind this, also the US was a different country back then, waaaay different from what it is today
ART in the best way of this sport w/o every 30 sec a jump. Clear that's was the show part of the Olympics. But for me this was every year after the championships the best part, especially with Katarina Witt 🤘🙏 This was Katarina's clear statement (for her East German government)... I'm ready for the ice shows and you must keep the word, what you have given to me. Second Olympic Gold against American Ice show 💪
Last one to skate for the night. 1988 Olympics what a way to end it. She just has that natural 😍 appeal. She can really sell what she does best. The world fell in love with her.
