(Lyrics):
[Verse 1]
Our little army boy
Is coming home from B.F.P.O
We've a bunch of purple flowers
To decorate a mammy's hero
Mourning in the aerodrome
The weather warmer, he is colder
Four men in uniform
To carry home my little soldier
[Chorus]
(What could he do? Should have been a rock star)
But he didn't have the money for a guitar
(What could he do? Should have been a politician)
But he never had a proper education
(What could he do? Should have been a father)
But he never even made it to his twenties
What a waste, army dreamers
Oh, what a waste of army dreamers
[Verse 2]
Tears over a tin box
Oh, Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know
Like a chicken with a fox
He couldn't win the war with ego
Give the kid the pick of pips
And give him all your stripes and ribbons
Now he's sitting in his hole
He might as well have buttons and bows
[Chorus]
(What could he do? Should have been a rock star)
But he didn't have the money for a guitar
(What could he do? Should have been a politician)
But he never had a proper education
(What could he do? Should have been a father)
But he never even made it to his twenties
What a waste, army dreamers
Oh, what a waste of army dreamers
Oh, what a waste of all them army dreamers
Army dreamers, army dreamers

For those of us who do not understand why the kid joined the army, he originally joined for the money. The song is calling out the preditory nature of war/armies on the lower class into thinking its their only way to achieve. something.

There was also the fact that war was seen as something amazing to take part in "Fight for your country" "Honor your family" Children were always encouraged to join the army.. There is a poem "Dulce et decorum est" That talks about it They were never warned of the horrors of war..only encouraged to lay their lives down..Glorification of war..
@akiokami9367
@akiokami9367 3 месяца назад
The great war was a concept of wonder. Reports did it no justice, but there were actually too many people volunteering (for Britain at least, and in the beginning). It became a spectacle, with soldiers talking of the excitement of war and encouraging others to join in. But then it turned, war advanced, and soldiers were taken down. WW2 was when the true turn happened, ptsd wasn't as prevalent in the first. But we quickly had a name for it during the second. The second was no spectacle, it was brutal, one that had no surplus of volunteers, and one that many injured themselves to avoid.

‘My son lost his face Not by losing a race Not by telling a lie Why did he fight?’ Sinistrous trenches will never lead the right way Sun had choked with the beast’s fumes before it rose Metal hail is hungry for flesh, ready to suppress the beating Which in my ears is louder than commander’s orders Like commandments rehashed, heads will doze Bodies will keep the mantra of motion, competing With their creator, who temporarily ignores dismay ‘My son lost his face Not by losing a race Not by telling a lie Why did he fight?’ To have spat acid lungs for me seems a stroke of luck I just looked out once to see my lucky star soaring Only to see it plunge, as if it was telling me to duck In vain - cheekbones opened in warm wet welcoming Steel kissed my eyes promising a mask worthy the opera It’s better to lose one’s face than give up honour, is it? Since when is slaughter honourable and proper? ‘My son lost his face Not by losing a race Not by telling a lie Why did he fight?’

The country I'm living, Vietnam, the wars, men were actually volunteered to become soldiers and fight for independence; they risk their life for the love of the country. This hit hard because deep down inside I kinda want to join law enforcement , I didn’t tell anyone. My parents want me to be a doctor or a lawyer, father says lawyer, my mother says doctor bc I’m good at bio and an excellent debater or so they say. I think both medicine and law are fun but I’m indecisive and don’t know what career path to pick. I’m seventeen and next year will be my last high school year. What sparked this sudden urge to join law enforcement was this game I got as a gift a week or two ago. My father gifted me the latest RE4 remake since I was doing well on my exams. The game is really fun, I have a weak heart but I personally felt a shift in myself. Like I’m not as frightened by things as I was before. I’m so indecisive a few months ago I wanted to be an astronaut. I don’t know what I want to be when I’m of age. Honestly everything seems so fun to do.

@@sandrasorto8375 Thank you, I’ll try. I’m just very worried because I want to make my parents feel proud, and I want to do it as soon as possible. I feel that it’s the least I owe them. I love them very much and I want to impress them by attending a prestigious university and excelling at my future career. This summer was so jam packed with extracurricular activities and SAT prep. I want to ace the SAT on my first attempt (hopefully). I’ve somewhat settled on becoming a lawyer. I feel I sorta have a knack for it though I’m not very confident.

My father was in the military, yes. He had been a high ranked soldier, he fought hard and for many years. He has passed, this song reminds me of him, the way he had been fighting for his country. The lyrics “What a waste, army dreamers.” Remind me of him, his dream was this, he thrived for this and struggled many rough years, but what he got was death, he died on the battle field, I find myself visiting this song and even though it was created a few months ago, I think it’s relatable for me.

There's so many boys who died without wars, just serving at military service, sometimes by misunderstandings between soldiers, sometimes by injuries that they're got while in military service. Sometimes by keeping the area they're forced to keep from criminals. I feel sad for all soldiers who died by wars or just by being in military service. 😢 You all heroes! RIP 🕊

Listening to this song while reading one of the short stories about a young soldier they lost was unbearable.

I may not be someone that knows the insides of the military and how they operate. But I'm pretty sure they have people that would manage reports and logistics. After all, an army can't sustain itself and it has to have someone plot out supply line routes and whatnot. Furthermore, if you're someone that can speak multiple language I'm sure it'd be great to have you as a radio operator to intercept any comms and gather intel.

really random but for the marauder fans out there.. "What could he do? Should have been a rockstar. But he didn't have the money for a guitar." - Sirius Black "What could he do? Should have been a politician. But he never had a proper education." - Regulus Black "What could he do? Should have been a father. But he never even made it to his twenties." - James Potter "Oh, what a waste of all them army dreamers." - The Marauders Era as a whole

Surprising that so many people in the comments instead relate this song to fictional situations than actual wars. Seems like we are way too sheltered that war seems like an intangible concept to us.
@Invel-967
@Invel-967 5 месяцев назад
I get what you mean, but at the end of the day it is a song so there isn't exactly a limit for its interpretation. (I personally do not like the idea of war, so I am thinking of a fictional scenario because I like that safe distance. Again I do understand the tragedy of war and I do not disregard it, I simply choose not to fully embrace it. )
@dulcetscreaming
@dulcetscreaming 5 месяцев назад
@@Invel-967 Art can be interpreted in many ways; you'd be correct. But there's somewhat of a moral unspoken rule that if the song is about a political bias, it's to be treated as it's meaning.
@Invel-967
@Invel-967 5 месяцев назад
@@dulcetscreaming You put it very nicely. To be fair, I think that if we choose a more loose interpretation while still showing respect to the tribute and the purpose of the song we are within moral rules and guidelines 😌.

I see this song for a lot fictional stories that are just as dark, when you take all the fancy details, its someone who never got to make it to their true potential, and a beautiful life wasted.
@soulslvr9562

Weird considering how the world has never known peace since before 9/11 if even then. But again art can be interpreted in many ways... death of the author and all. But yes looking at this, this is a anti war song lamenting a mother's pain after her son comes home to her not by her door but by casket. But again people can interpret it differently as they wish. As what is art without the ability to interpret things differently
