By special request, here is Kate Smith on the Jack Paar Show, 1963. I love Paar's comment at the end, "If a rainbow could sing, it would sound like you." Enjoy!
Just one of the greatest singers of my lifetime...I'm 84. Pitch, volume, interpretation, control and utter confidence!. One of America's most wonderful voices!
Kate Smith is unknown in my home Germany and that is so sad. Her singing has such a masterclass and how she sung THE WAY WE WERE , GOD BLESS AMERICA, WHAT KIND OF FOOL, CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN, ETC. IS SO BEAUTIFUL. For me always the greatest joy and away from her singing she was a so dear lady füll of best values.
This shows the real artistry of Kate Smith: how she can so immediately change the mood and meaning of songs as she goes from one almost directly into another, never losing contact with her audience. She does this through her God-given vocal gifts--that unique legato sound and her ability to do word-coloring so consistently, her innate sense of musical temperament and always wanting to share her talents--the real sign of a true musician. If memory serves correctly, this is about a year before her beloved manager, Ted Collins, died from a heart attack, at which time Kate declared that she would never sing again. Thankfully, she was persuaded to resume her career, but she was still on an emotional rollercoaster. If you see her 1965 "What's My Line" mystery guest appearance, she had, by then, put on a great deal of weight.
Wonderful singer and song! Look at the clips of Kate in the later 60's and 70's and see how she became more and more beautiful! And always a beautiful singer!
At this point Kate had slimmed down considerably and when I saw here in concert at Arie Crown Theater in Chicago in I think 1969, she had slimmed down even more. And was at the top of her game.
This is one great singer with everything: voice (which she knew how to use), diction, phrasing, interpretation, personality. No frills, no screaming, no raunch, no sounding like everyone else, just absolutely fabulous singing. She was also a patriot -- yes, with a lot of class -- and today? The lowest of the low have dragged her, this truly wonderful woman, through the mud and slime of their own perverse existence It's just heartbreaking to me.
As a 71 year old female who adored Miss Smith. I could not agree with you more!!!!!!!!!!! She was one in a million. It made me sick the way they demeaned her after her passing. It was horrible, and with no reason but for her wholesome and Christian beliefs! God bless you, dear Kate!! Look her up on What's My Line sometime. It's really funny and delightful!! It was from about the 50's or so!! SHE FOOLED THEM!! One of the few that succeeded!! The high voice was the best!!🤩🤩🤩😂❤🩹🤍💙👍🙏🙏💐🥀🗽🗽🎵🎼🎶🛐✝
Someone mentioned that she slimmed down at some point in the 1960s. I seen to remember that she became a diabetic around 1964 or 1965. Perhaps she lost some weight for health reasons. I loved her at any weight.
And all done with without that GD auto-tune shit most so-called singers need to use now-a-days! Ladies and Gentlemen, this is pure God-given talent at it's absolute best!
What a wonderful clip of Kate. I just love her version of these two songs. I have such fond memories of watching her late afternoon TV show somewhere around 1954 or so.
Kate Smith was SO MUCH MORE than "God Bless America" her signature song. I think we sometimes overlook her immense talent and the ability to make any song her own!
It's so refreshing to see and hear Kate Smith stand there and sing without ridiculous special effects and distractions. What a powerful voice. Total talent and no gimmicks. I miss television like this, especially Kate Smith and Jack Paar.
Kate slways said her voice was a gift from God and that was so true. Miss Kathryn E. Smith Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, a true patriot. RIP Kate you are missed!!
