I moved back East from California in 1979. Driving to work one day I heard "Here in California." I had to pull over to the side of the road to listen and get my emotions under control. listening to hear who the artist was, they said, "The late great Kate Wolf." I've been a fan ever since.

The first time I heard Kate was on KVMR radio (Nevada City). Driving over the Altamont Pass in the golden hour just before sunset, I heard this beautiful voice singing about "the golden rollin' hills of California..." It was one of those almost surreal moments when what you are hearing and what you are seeing are in complete synchronicity. After the song, the announcer came on and said: "That was Kate Wolf, who died last night. Rest well, Kate." What a profound loss.

Me too, when I first heard her sing this song, I was completely blown away. Now every time I hear it, it reminds me of years past and driving around Marin County and the beautiful rolling hills. What a beautiful memory and God grant her peace. I heard she died of breast cancer, probably from the same thing that almost killed Cheryl Crow, don't leave your plastic water bottles in the sun, they will give off chemicals and those chemicals will kill you.

Add "Here in California", "These Times We're Livin' In", "Across the Great Divide"...people say that she should have been "bigger", but she's the perfect size for me to treasure. Always has been. Thank you for this. I had the honor of knowing her briefly in the 80's. A fellow-minstrel she'd known for many years in San Francisco was in a folk-duo with me in Sonoma (circa 83-84). I just wanted to thank you for making the halcyon days in West Marin, Sonoma, & Mendocino live again. I cry when I see her, but not for myself; it is for the less fortunate souls who didn't experience her magic in-person. Unselfish and STRONG. Brother Warrior, Eyes of a Painter. I just now knew about her. Yes very much a loss. My goodness I'm glad I know of her now, I was actually doing some hawk sounds to listen too. To feed a hawk coming round , fresh as I could from some defrosted pork over steamed water with a fork to tenderize. Hawks around here most of the time. But I'm very partial to My Crows. I hope they won't take offense. I don't know ya, but I pikt this reply/ comment platform to leave my condolences and my interest. Thank you hope that is OK. I'm not able to leave a comment on my own why idk. But I'm not letting that stand in my way. Maybe this special lady will recognize that today for me , she walks freely among the Hawks. And Wolves. I hear you friend. I first heard of Kate Wolf from a folkie friend here in the NW US back in 1998 and that was 12 years after she had passed away. Prior to that I had never even heard her name, ever. I recognized then that she was a fine song writer, singer and musician. The question was why so few knew about her. My only guess is that she got started a little late in the folk music game, her first album was released in 1976 which was quite awhile after the folk music scene died down. She never had a hit song although she has many (lots and lots of) wonderful beautiful and finely crafted songs that are just marvelous. But I will tell anyone that will listen what a fine singer, songwriter and performer she was. We all need this kind of music. It is great for the mind and soul to listen to such songs and tunes.

I am awe struck by the beauty of this music. The mandolin is achingly beautiful. Many ,many thanks to you, Kate, Wolf Woman. Howl with the full moon and run with the wind.

Nina Gerber playing the mandolin. I was fortunate to catch her live when she accompanied Karla Bonoff here in Bellingham, WA in 2014. She was amazing. It didn't surprise me, as I'd been listening to her for decades as Kate Wolf's accompanists and always had liked her sound.

@@rajsuss I went to Western for grad school and would have stayed in Bellingham if it weren't for my girlfriend and family in the Twin Cities. Living in Bellingham was like being on acid every single day.

Nina Gerber heard Kate perform and knew she had to be in her band so she took guitar lessons. To me that’s profound.

As a California refugee, this is a beautiful but very sad tune. Helps me remember what was, but is no more.

The first time I saw the beginning of this video, I figured Kate had some high school girl on stage with her, to get some experience. Nina looks so young and girlish. Then Nina started to play, and my goodness, she put out music that Ricky Skaggs or Bill Monroe would have been proud of. Her work on this song is among the finest works I have ever heard. And there is one point, there they are all playing, and Nina takes that mandolin solo. I can see Kate catching the fire from it, and when they all kick back in, they are all truly inspired. Nina is a great musician.

Nina WAS a high school girl when she started playing with Kate. Nina said her goal when she started playing was to get good enough to play with Kate. And boy did she ever. When I first did sound for Kate in Mendocino California, Nina had just started appearing publicly with Kate, and she was still in high school at that time, in 1979. Owl Records, founded by Kate and still run by her family, just announced the coming release of a new collection CD titled Kate Wolf: Live in Mendocino. It should be released by June 2018. You can find details and song samples at www.katewolf.com/albums/live-in-mendocino. Nina's mando playing on this song on the new album was even better than on this video, if you can imagine such a thing. Today's date, January 27, was Kate's birthday, and one year ago this date there was a special Kate Wolf 75 concert at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley that featured Nina Gerber and many others of Kate's friends and band mates.

Thank you for such beauty and something that will make my Dad's soul rejoice. He loved singing and used to sing and dance in the street with my Mom. He was never allowed to sing anywhere because he was Native California Reservation Pomo. In fact, my parents could not marry at her church. I played and sang as a teen but huge throat and sinus surgery put an end to that dream. I love your music, it is so the feeling of a wild soul raised part of the year on the rez in the divorced kid doing the back and forth marathon between city and rez............I now live in "the golden hills" of California, where the poppies used to be.........we still have a few, but mostly just malls and a little desert in between.
