Momentum, with a foundation of uncertainty and the ever present unknown (injury, mental fatigue, over-confidence) and many others, we are still fans of these two incredible athletes. No matter the result, everyone wins, despite the names in this ranking. We are here to witness the history these two amazing athletes create together.

I think this race is going to be absolutely great to watch! There are a lot of variables on who will come out on top. The strategy for each lady is actually quite simple. And I know they know what they have to do. It comes down to a very simple question: who wants it more badly?

@johnwilson5743
@johnwilson5743 7 месяцев назад
There is nothing stopping them competing against the "best in the world", right now. They are both "Open Grade" athletes. (Meaning aged 20 and over) But the College system controls them and as there is no real benefit for the Colleges to have them competing in Open Grade events, they strongly discourage it. Their College scholorships do not provide for out-of-College events. For example, they could both have competed in the World Cross Country event last year (if they had qualified and been chosen to compete for the USA and had designed their training to do so) but they didn't. Why not? They reality is, they may not have been good enough to even make the US team as Open Grade runners! To be precise, in middle/long distance Track and Cross-country, College level is a lot lower, standard wise, than Open Grade. They would have been swamped and finished mid-field, at the International event. Don't get me wrong: I think KT is an excellent Cross Country runner and pick her to do well in Open Grade in 3 or 4 years time, as she gets stronger and faster.

Have enjoyed watching these two fine athletes compete the past two years. NCAA's should be a fun 6K if the weather is good. They will need to improve their 5K times on the track to be competitive in the Diamond League.......but I think they can both do it. I think Tuohy will eventually go under 3:55 for the 1500 as well.

Tuohy has been such an incredible athlete. Absolutely love following her. Valvey has been a worry all last year. She just always looks so fit and absolutely tireless. I knew she was held back by injuries, and I thought she would be a real threat when injury free. I would like to see Tuohy sweep the remaining NCAA Championships now and through spring, but I think Valvey's time has come to dominate the Championships. She is just too strong and powerful now. She visibly has more muscle mass compared to last year, is more powerful and finishes with little perceptible fatigue. Just an amazing step up from last year. I think she will win the X championship. I am anticipating that she will flatten the hills.

I said from last year. Their rivalry will go on for a very long time in the mid-to-distance races (1500 to 5000m). However, I strongly believe that Parker Val will go on to be a better long-to-over the distance events (10,000m, 10k, marathons and so on); while Katelyn will run between the 1500Ms to 10,000Ms. They've two different running styles that are suitable for different events. Parker is a more enduring and conserving runner, while Katelyn is a more of a power and aggressive runner. Moving forward, it will be great to see what they both will do in the future.❤🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🙏

Parker has my heart and she is also equally as amazing and I think she has a chance of winning but if Kaitlyn wins I might celebrate just a little bit more. That doesn’t mean that Parker does not deserve it I think she is absolutely the one of the greatest runners that exist today if not of all time, but Kaitlyn is approve and goat and see her do it one more time would be absolutely beautiful. This is the best Valby has ever looked. Breaking the course record at Nuttycombe, and finally beating Tuohy, has to have given Parker a psychological lift. Will she be able to do it again in an NCAA final on a hilly course? The way Parker has consistently beaten the Alabama Kenyans to become the 2 time SEC cross country champion, and SEC and NCAA 5K track champion, shows her mettle. Parker is primed for another course record and bolts to the lead. Tuohy will try to go with her but not be able to handle the hot pace. I expect Valby to stretch her lead over the final 2k in a convincing victory.

I agree about Florida having a chance as a team, but that is new to this program and is not changing Valby's strategy. You need to realize each coach is different as to how they run their program and what is their main goal. NCState is team oriented and I completely relate given where and who I ran for. Toughy has a job and that is to keep her lead pack tight and if she goes out too fast that causes her teammates harm. We train to stay together and need each other to be on point or that causes all 7 members to falter. Invitationals are normally where we are given freedom to race selfishly but for championships no. It all depends on what the coach builds their program on. Florida has not had a strong team until this year, why? Because Valby's awesomeness has caught the attention of incoming recruits. That's great, but that is not going to change how she races,no coach would do that to someone that talented.

I really like both these ladies, I have been following KT much longer and she is my fav no matter what happens. I am not a fairweather fan like many. I will say with all of Touhy's records and times, if she is full form, I'd hate to be anyone else. Of course, KT hasn't won every race, but she has held records in every distance she's ever run, indoor, outdoor, xc, except the 10000, which she did win! Parker, what can we say about her. She also, is the definition of class! After KT passed her last year, she didn't have to do that interview, but she did anyway, displaying great charm while not winning. Many times the reporters will ask embarrassing questions, and she handled it very well!

Lots of holes here. Why Valby sits in the outside lane on the track, racking up extra yards. Or why Tuohy let Valby get SO far ahead in CC. My strategy knowledge is 40 years old, but I'd say it's best to look at Tuohy's per km times. If she is running negative splits by just a bit, her wins are no surprise.

It should be a great race. Valby looks great but as anyone that has run cross knows, it all depends on how hilly the course is. Those courses in Florida that Valby runs on are mostly flat. Yes, golf courses in most cases, but still not very hilly. Not sure what the Nationals course is going to be like, but if it is really flat, then it will go to Valby. If it is hillier, then the nod goes to Tuohy. Last year, Valby went out really fast and Tuohy just sat back and waited as the course got a little more hilly towards the end, and then she put the hammer down and left Valby. Again, as anyone that has run cross knows, it is all about the hills and I think this is where Tuohy is a much better runner. I am quite sure Valby does not want to see a repeat of last year, but if she does not conserve some energy, Tuohy will run her down and that last 1k she has a beast of a kick. Again, Florida is mostly flat with the exception of the area around Clermont. That could end up hurting Valby in the long run if she is mostly training on the flats. You really can't compare times from one course to the other as again, it all depends on the hills.

How much time build up to getting into such running form from injury to having performances well above her last years? I dont think Tuohy not being her freshest makes it not-sus. Chmiel finished behind Tuohy in the timerange she always finishes behind her teammate...

People need to remember that Valve is racing for an individual title, even though her team is there and scoring, she is racing for a single goal...1st place individual. Toughy is racing with a completely different strategy, keep lead pack tight and bring home a TEAM championship. Last year's race was a prime example of the different mindsets. Toughy had to race smart and could not race for her own personal goal. She was given the go ahead, with a kilometer left in the race, to go for Valby because the team had a locked win. We won't know who the better athlete is until they meet as pros. My personal opinion is Toughy will prevail in the future. And as a former female NCAA D1 XC/Track, Toughy is the ultimate teammate to race with, given the sacrifices she continues to endure and racing line to line with only a team strategy, and most people won't ever understand or relate to what she is doing. @samanderson7745

That is literally not how Katelyn has been racing at all during her collegiate career. She heads to the front, or at the minimum she sticks with the lead pack. She has some other teammates that are talented enough to also be in the lead pack but she absolutely does not hold back to keep the pack tight (she's actually shown that she panics a bit when she's around other runners who are matching her pace in the later parts of a race). Lowest score wins in CC so sending someone after 1 point vs 7 can be all the difference between the team winning or getting 2nd. NC had no idea if they had "locked" the win. If you want to talk about bunching up then New Mexico absolutely did a better job than anyone else last year as their 5 scorers were between 20 and 34 while NC was spread out between 1 and 74, so no, they had no idea if they were winning or not as the gap to New Mexico was only 26 points. If NM had a Katelyn or Parker who could have scored 1 or 2 points instead of 20 they absolutely would have sent them after the individual title as that could have improved their team chances for the national title. Instead, Katelyn won that race because she ran a much more metered effort and maintained her pace and had enough left for one of her notable kicks while Parker slowed up in the last 800 meters or so because she went too hard, too early and started to run out of steam. She's been doing a much better job this season on evening out her effort over the distance and as such has been the benchmark for the other gals to beat. But, again, it makes zero sense for your number 1 runner to only score 5-10 points when they could be scoring 1 point.

@@samanderson7745 yea, a bunched up pack is not a Touhy concern, now, Kelsey? Nope, as you said low score wins. A bunched up pack...is the resposibility of the slower/slowerst pack members, push to close, ain't no one slowing so you can finish tight.

@@michaellayman945 Agree, with her delay; unless she has changed to that format this year. Parker's forte' is to get way out front and allow others to chase her down. This works unless you have someone like Tuohy and hills. You are right it will be a facinating rematch.
