A short documentary on Kathak in Pakistan through the years. From Kathak's true essence to how it survived during the first military dictatorship. As recounted by the captivating Bina Jawwad, a melting pot of countless passions.
This documentary was my first experiment working solely with a cellphone camera (iPhone 7). But it definitely will not be the last!
With special thanks to Sohail Anees, for being just the help I needed when two arms and a tripod were not enough in the end.
Credits:
Harmonium | Zaim Meraj
Tabla | Kamran Meraj
Vocals | Bina Jawwad
Narration | Hajera Sheikh

I had been in Lahore in 1991attending a SARC event on Architecture and was amazed by a performance based on a Hindu mythology hosted by the students of NCA,Lahore......My deepest respect from Bangladesh towards all the torch bearares of finest form of our classical culture.

@Arunitaaa31 It has a Hindu origin. Culturally however, its scope is wider than Hindu culture. Kathak went to Mughal courts. That's how we also have non-devotional numbers such as taranas and compositions with salaami. Traditional taranas are a big part of Kathak as we know Kathak today. I think taranas were not performed in temples in pre-mughal India. With Mughals came khayaal singing and with khayaal came things such as taranas into Kathak. Best of whatever I understand. Also, not all thumris are devotional or about Krishna. They have shringaar ras and/but aren't about deities.

Reminded me of a must attendance to the annual music conferences at the openair theater at the Bagh e Jinnah Lahore. Thats where i witnessed Gopi Krishan dance and Begum Akhtar sing. That was early 60s, arranged by the (I think) owner of Hayat Auction Mart. Wish I had discussed all this when Bina visited Qadir Nagar some years back.

Min. 9:38 "...But when I used to dance, I would just dance for...I don't know, some higher power ". Well, I think this wonderful lady - Bina Jawwad - wants to say that she was dancing for the sake of art. That ( very well said ), "higher power" is ART. Because... "Art evokes the mystery whithout which the world would not exist". "Art is a lever on human nature that enhances sociability. If humans are social beings it is in part, beacuse art is conducive to this". "Art expresses the beauty and the harmony of the Universe and we are part of it." And so on... Thank you!

it's sad how our own leaders have made a mockery of our ideology. Dance is a religion in itself - it teaches love and oneness through story telling, just like Islam.

A Pakistani researcher said Indians danced for god's and they did not turn their back to god's. If it was Krishna dance it should not have turning and circles. According to that researcher Mr Faqir Hussain Saga. Kathak originated in courts if Mughals. It was for kings.
