Imagine being up for your very first Oscar and not only winning, but being part of the only ever tie for Best Actress with the woman widely considered to be the greatest film actress ever
Hepburn is in a class by herself. But c'mon, Streisand gave an iconic performance that pretty much sums up the full range of her talents: humor, pathos, comedy, tragedy, dancing, and those honeyed ballads and roof-shattering belters.
I love Streisand. She deserved her win but, common, she couldn't beat Hepburn's monologues in The Lion in Winter (I could peel you like a pear and God himself will call it justice, We all have knives... we are the killers..., what a desolation...). Hepburn's stare when Henry kiss her mistress and her talk with Richard (Anthony Hopkins). Both of them deserved the Oscars. Streisand's character was a revelation but the Academy didn't care much about that. The Academy evaluated performances, NOT CHARACTERS.
This footage is GOLD. Babs was hilarious! I loved when she said "hello gorgeous" hahaha. She looked gorgeous too! I honestly thought her outfit was pretty snazzy; certainly not anything I'd expect her to wear, but it looked gorgeous on her nonetheless!
Ingrid Bergman is so beautiful, im a big fan of her since mu mother show me her movie Gaslight in which she won Oscar for the leading actress category...RIP
i just finished yesterday watching her other film with cary grant called Indiscreet... such a great film.. thanks by the way for your suggestion..i'll try to find that film later ;)
Streisand deserved the award. As always, knocked it out of the ball park with her Funny Girl performance. She is also a pioneer for breaking down various barriers that were in place prior to her arrival. Truely amazing woman.
+Stet Tan Back then celebrities didn't worry about people like Joan Rivers and so called fashion experts. People back then dresed more originally. Now mostly everyone at these awards shows look like they are wearing uniforms.
Stet Tan it reminded me of Helena Bonham Carter talking about Oscar's when she was younger that before it was about acting not dresses. That is what it turned into later on. Fashion over acting.
Speaking as a true Babs phile , I saw the move in the and begged for the album , wore it out ,Sitting there in a movie house ,looking up at the screen , Just mesmerized .. and she does it to to this day ....
I love Barbra’s win so much she shows a range of emotions, she owns the film, and she gives the best performance in it. While I love Katherine the same cannot be said.
I’m listening to Barbra Streisand‘s book on audible. And she said she was so mortified when she saw that what she was wearing was sort of see-through. Simply due to the lighting. She was mortified by the outfit. I thought she looked. AWESOME.
OMG! It's Ingrid Bergman!!!!!! I can't believe it. I took me a while to realize where I had seen this face before and it was in Casablanca :D- so surreal!!!
Kate, the greatest actress in all times!Babs, the greatest show woman in all times! In a legendary tie! I'm in heaven! Congratulations, DIVAS!Bravo!!!! :)
Sorry....I thought Gaga's nomination was born of personal popularity, and I kind of thought it might have been manipulated into reality by the Academy to inflate tune-in ratings for a show that's been in years-long steady decline. IMHO I thought Gaga was nothing special. Cooper, so much the better actor, really propped her up. And the dead giveaway to an actress's limited range (cmon guys, she's NOT an actress), was her inability conveying grief to emote convincingly in close up, so they resort to the trash-the- furnishings-in-rage scene...always a default when the talent's just not there. I'm sure she'll never win in the future. Look at Cher, also a top pop star in her time, but brilliant in "Moonstruck"...Gaga could not have pulled that character off, and she's an Italian from New York City!!!
Barbra Streisand is a natural comedienne. Fabulous in every sense that is hard to find these days. And I love that Katherine Hepburn gave her that space to enjoy the moment!
Notice the only person she didn't Thank was her husband at the time, Elliott Gould, who was sitting next to her in the audience. They were actually going thru a break-up at the time and would promptly announce their divorce months later. But Elliott was a gentleman who showed up as Barbra's date that nite. I'm sure her quick rise to fame was a heavy burden on any man who was married to Streisand at the time. To Elliott's credit, he has rarely -- if ever -- bad mouthed Streisand in public.
Ingrid Bergman looks so chic, and beautiful. Who designed her stunning gown? A gal could wear that today with confidence, 53 years later! Babs sheer, "peek-a-boo" Arnold Scassi pant-suit, doesn't hold-up as well, but it did put him on the fashion map!
damn its a shame Hepburn wasn't there. one of those rare times aswell the winner isn't even there to accept the award. damn shame. wouldve been interesting to see her next to Streisand
Not sure if anyone else commented but I do think Barbra at 3:36 appears the most unguarded I've ever seen her. Her eyes seem to show a lifetime of hurts in that moment.
Perhaps the strongest category for Best Actress ever? Every single one of those performances was magnificent and deserved to win. How you choose between Hepburns scorching performance as Eleanor, Joanne Woodward's masterclass performance in Rachel Rachel or a career best from Vanessa Redgrave...it should have been a 5-way tie.
Her outfit was actually a costume from On A Clear Day, but it wasn’t used in the film. She even refers to it when she angrily tells her fiancé, “my outfit isn’t too high cut or low cut or too dark or too light…..in fact, it’s see-through!”
That happens to be a very chic Scassi number. It make all the headlines back in the day because what she didn't expect was it was under the studio lights the outfit was see through and the audience sitting there (including about a billion television audience) saw her backside ... totally cl ASS ic Barbra:-)
GREAT BARBRA STREISAND , GREAT KATHERINE HEPBURN AND GREATEST INGRID BERGMAN THE EPITOME OF ACTING AND OSCAR PRIZE. SHE' S REALLY GORGEOUS HERE AND AS USUALLLY HER CHARISMATIC SMILE.
"The Lion in Winter" is undoubtedly in the Top 5 of Hepburn's Best film performances. Hadn't won the Oscar the previous year for " Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" she would have been the one and only winner in 1969. Barbra was lucky enough to have odds on her side. But then, hadn't Streisand won the Oscar for "Funny Girl" the Academy would have probably award her for "The Way We Were" in 1973 since Glenda Jackson (winner that year) had won it two years before.....
You are absolutely RIGHT!! In fact, there was some controversy that Streisand got to be a voting member of the Academy so quickly. If the Academy waited a lil longer, Streisand would've lost to Katherine Hepburn by one vote. Just think about it. Who says one vote doesn't make a difference?? In this case, it did !!
As the accounting firm representative handed the envelope to Ingrid seconds before she walked out he said, "READ EVERYTHING ON THE CARD!" She got no other info and walked out.
Arnold Scassi designed the pajama-pantsuit outfit, but she tried it on for a friend late in the day in a not-very-well-lit room. He just saw a hip 1968 bell-bottom pantsuit, and said that it'd be a nice contrast to all the dresses. No one realized that when the hot lights at the Oscars hit her the fabric would turn see-through, or that the fabric might get caught on something & tear. She could've had one of the ORIGINAL "wardrobe malfunctions"--On A Clear Day, You Can See Forever indeed!
There is only one voice and she's got it Barbra Streisand no one could ever come up to her, we may a queen of soul, king of Rock n roll and king to Pop but she stands in a class of her own? THE VOICE !!! Her acting is superb in both roles comedy & love stories. Way to go girl, keep it up Babs !!!!!!! Her new show Back in Brooklyn was just great with her son, Jason.
Barbra , is one classy woman, tying Katherine with 3030 votes each. In her debut starring role tying with a legendary icon. The "Hello Gorgeous is the opening line from the movie she won for. Katherine had won the previous year for "Guess who's Coming to Dinner" in my opinion only, a more memorable movie than "A Lion In Winter" Although both performances were great.
HUH? Paul..WHAT THE FUCK? Let's think about this. Your Outlandish Thoughts. So you think back in 1968...there was 6060 Academy Members..NOT TRUE. TO even think...NO one else in this Best Actress Category even got a VOTE..other than Katharine and Barbra...Foolish thinking. It is 100% lame ass thinking. FAILURE PAUL..PAUL YOUR THINKING IS A FAILURE! And PAUL..Being 100% a failure...it is Katharine...NOT Katherine. FAILURE
Paul Featherston Your statement holds no true. you must steal medication out your mom's purse...Your statement is a 100% LIE...And it shows YOU don't know shit! Failure. 100% Failure. Let's review...Failure is Paul. He believes..cuz he is stooopid beyond believe, that no other Actress nominated that year..got any votes...FAILURE. Paul..your own Mom..Anita Dick told me your a Failure.
Hey Dumb Cluck Gabriel..YOUR not following this right..The Dumb Cluck..OP...said they split the vote..the dumb cluck didn't factor in..THERE WERE 3 OTHER ACTRESSES WHO GOT VOTES ALSO!!!! FUCKING FAILURES...plus there were NOT over 6000 ACADEMY MEMBERS IN 1968!!! FUCKING FAILURES...Thanks for playing DUMB CLUCK!!!
Barbra , is one classy woman, tying Katherine with 3030 votes each....THIS IS WHAT THE OP WROTE>>>NO CLUE!!! ONE MORE TIME...THE DUMB CLUCK OP..THINKS three other actresses DIDNT GET ONE VOTE!!! STOOOOOPID SHIT!!! lol
If I was Streisand I would have grabbed the opportunity to hug and kiss Ingrid Bergman and also Katharine Hepburn if she had been there. They were such great actresses and stars.
@donatord her dress looked like that when you flash cameras. she didn't realize until she got onto the red carpet that her dress was transparent. It was a big news the next day. (really big news). She didn't wear it intently, it was an accident.
I wish more women in Hollywood could direct and star in their own films. Barbra for Yentl was one of the first examples. I want to see it happen in my lifetime. Men have done it all the time.
Barbra was furious when she discovered her ensemble was so translucent under the lights, and let the designer know it. I appreciated her outfit, but what was the designer thinking not lining it?? Regardless, you looked great, Barbra.
CLASSIC clip!!! Classy Barbra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No wonder she won this Oscar :) Brilliant film and brilliant work! She is simply THE BEST, even when she was this young!
Now imagine a Best Picture tie. Toy Story 3 and Inception (or The Social Network or whatever) in 2011. And La La Land and Moonlight in 2017. Now THAT would be epic.
For Best Animated Feature I would have wanted to see a tie with Moana & Kubo and the Two Strings in 2017, Incredibles and Shrek 2 in 2005, Despicable Me 2 and the Croods in 2014 and Encanto, Raya or Mitchell’s Vs the Machines this year
The Lion IN the Winter. Lol funny Ingrid. There needs to be another major Oscar tie one day but with 6700 Academy members nowadays the odds are against it. At least we got a great Oscar shock this year with the best picture envelope mix up.
So this is what Barbra is referring to when she said that she had no idea that the plastic sequence of her outfit becomes transparent when hit by the light. haha She's sexy though! Love her! Fashionista.
“I remember a dreadful thing,” Harvey said. “When we went to the podium, Ms. Streisand was ahead of me, and we went up four or five steps to get to the stage and by mistake I stood on her dress and it ripped. By the time we got to our places, I’m standing next to Ingrid Bergman and all we could see was the back and her behind. We started to get absolutely hysterical.”
On Golden Pond was great and so was she, there was a tie at the 2013 Oscars. I forget which category but Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty both won. A tie is always shocking.
Love that moment when she's up next for her speech and she looks at her Oscar and then she says "Ugh...hello gorgeous!" XD I love her she's so precious
Imagine if Hepburn had been there to accept her award with Streisand. Y'all know she would have been wearing pants standing next to Streisand in whatever the heck she was wearing, lmao.
She forgot Elliott Gould, and at the end you can see him in the audience while everyone is clapping. He is conspicuously not clapping. A portent of what was to come.
