Yes; Katherine knocked that song out of the park and yes it can bring a grown man to tears. When she danced in America on DWTS every week some New York collumist would comment on her beauty and yes Kath does have thighs that do make grown men cry.
It's not a critic opinion, it's the quality of art, it's ability to last as well. Bizet's Carmen was booed on the opening night and he died in poverty. Mozart died in poverty as well. It doesn't mean they weren't great composers. They created great art - something lasting. This is what you don't seem to get. Art is created for the sake of art itself, an artist wants to create something great, sure he has to make a living but his primary purpose isn't to cater to tastes this moment.
Katherine has coached Joe MacEldereey who went on to win not only the4 X Factor but Pop Star To Opera Star, she is the best vocal coach in the country and is fluent in Italian, Spanish, German, French, Norwegian and Pakistani and can sing high quality opera on all the stages of the world!!
I listen to this song and I remember Luciano Pavarotti and it makes me want to cry because I won't be able to go to his concert anymore... but I can still listen to this beautiful song
I find it so sad that people can listen to this and not like it. How difficult for them to find pleasure in life if this is awful. Me, whether boof head or not find exceptional enjoyment listening to Katherine Jenkins.
+Ihdc1 Hi, Thanks for your comments which help me understand some of the angst. As I don't understand the words I lose this distraction. Therefore my ignorance is a blessing. ed
So what? Are you saying only Tenors are allowed to sing this? I'm not a Tenor but a register above are you saying I'm not to sing it? I have over 50 years experience as a singer & musician. The words are unimportant as 99% of those that hear it don't understand them anyway. Katherine Jenkins gave a magnificent performance and did it justice. You are simply being an elitist snob.
Katherine deserved her Brit awarda her UNESCO Mozart medal and her 8 grammies because she is the epitome of musical evolution, she is the greatest opera singer on the planet and a angel on earth, a beautiful humble child of god
Nice, really nice. Bravisssssima, Katherine - you have broken the barrier of "fach" or whatever experts have invented to spoil the fun. Impossible? No. There we have a mezzo singing and aria for tenor, a lovable result. The dear critics before they start yelling, please see the enormous crowd acclaiming her. Do you really believe your own negative review are going to have any impact?
I know that I have faults, but I'm not awful. Your angry/defensive words to my true statement about Ms. Jenkins prove that I have a foundation behind. Thank you. I would be happy to sing for you/her any day. Your judgement is welcomed as that's what we as humans do. My opinion of Ms. Jenkins is just as valid as yours of me. Thank you.
A singers vibrato gets faster and faster as they get older and as the voice matures, and it could also be a bit of nerves. Regardless of what you think of her her technique, she is still one of the most talented and genuinely beautiful singers I have ever seen.
But you're mistaken. I'm not "living in the past" by being a fan of opera. Opera has been developing steadily for the past 500 years. Some of the biggest innovations to the genre have come in the past century, including recent decades. There are hundreds of new operas written every year by composers from all over the planet. It's not an obsolete, novelty of an art form - it's just executed in a much different way than other types of musical entertainment.
:)) her voice is pumped from her throat. she never resonates naturally, thus her vibrato is beginning to cause wobble in the voice. She would never be heard in even a small opera house with that technique. She could do baroque but I guess she can`t read music.
You're welcome! Ms Yende is bound to be a huge star; she's very intelligent, and she's turned down all of the offers she received after her debut because she is spending the rest of the year studying. It's actually quite fascinating, the New York Times did an article on her a week ago and apparently the African voice translates very well into opera, because the concept of projection and acoustic resonance is very present in their own music, hence the very natural, distinctive timbre of her voice
***** No, she's definitely not a contralto. She's more of a mezzo, though I sometimes wonder if she's a soprano with a small range, since her tone sometimes comes off as forced
Katherine has sung last year in Beijeng with the Chinese National Orchestra along with Yang Yang ,however that's the closest she would be to Chinese. Her family has deep roots (over 500 years) in Wales. Her sister and mother are also beautiful. With her puppy-dog blue eyes Kath can melt a man's heart at 30 paces. Luv Her
You saw maybe one ad for a Happy Hour and you immediately jumped to conclusion that it's a common occurrence. Any genre needs advertising by the way, Broadway as well, opera hasn't been doing any for a long time, so now they realized that hey, it may be a good idea. Oh, and for a 3800 seat theater with as many performances, 80-90% ticket sales aren't that bad, Broadway gets a lot less. There are also Met HD broadcasts to the movie theaters, and those are generally sold out.
It took you three weeks to basically say: "I don't care that I sound like an ignorant windbag" How enlightening. Please, continue to love Katherine Jenkins. You deserve each other
The St Cecila is only awarded to a handful of choristers a decade and is personally bestowed by the Pope in the presents of the Archbishop of Canterberry, Katherine is the greatest church music scholar and is a reincarnation of the Virgin Mary Herself!!
I've been going to the Met forever, and I've not seen a single "happy hour". I did get an invitation for one exactly once. They have at most one or two of those per season that by the way lasts from September to May with 7 performances a week (in a 3800 house), and I seriously doubt they boost the attendance. As to support - arts have always been supported by donations, from the very beginning. Do you know how expensive it is to put an opera production?
People who want to dis her vocal talent try singing that yourself infront of thousands of people !!! See how good you are at opera then!! She's amazing xxx
Katherine Jenkins is the best opera singert trained Jo Mc Eldery who won the X factor, and then he won Pop Star to opera star as well. Roland Villazon has lessons with her because she leaned vocal teaching at the Royal Academy in London ao she is qualified to direct operas and tech opera singers. She won the Unesco Mozart award as well for her contributions to opera and Joan sutherland or Mariah callas never won that so that proves she is the best and her 19 Brit awards and her grammys.
I love all the stuck up people on here complaining about how terrible her voice is. I'd like to see YOU try to gain international stardom with your singing.
I really cannot believe how many jelous haters there are on youtube.... my god Kath is a fucking goddess, she is a bloody opera singer, she can dance as well as any anorexic diva at Saddelers Wells, she is the most talented british performer foe centuies and she has still got thighs to make a grown man cry.
People would say Bob Dylan is a great singer, because he was a fabulous communicator who understood the limits of his instruments and used them effectively. But his success cannot be limited to his singing alone; arguably his lyrics were the biggest selling point of his art, not necessarily his vocal talent. But this is also in the context of rock, and to a greater extent, folk music, neither of which KJ is a part of. She bills herself as a classical singer, so she is judged as such
I totally agree with you Therealmensa, no one wants to buy tickets because they are all crap I am afraid, I had to pay $40 to go to my high school choral society WTF?
Broadway hasn't replaced opera, it existed alongside it. Also, in case you don't know the Metropolitan Opera fills up its seats much better than Broadway. As to proper acoustics, the singers still have to be heard over the orchestra, don't you think acoustics helps the orchestra too? Oh, and I am a research scientist not a singer,, so why would I be jealous of a singer? I love my job. Oh, and logic please. Why being jealous of Kj yet not be jealous of Netrebko for example?
Netrebko and other opera singers make most money from live performances in opera not from CD sales though a concert tour with a CD release is more lucrative. Oh, and she is also an official "ambassador" of Chopard since 2006. But really, making money and being popular isn't a sign of greatness or artistry.
Netrebko has many things that I admire. The instrument itself really is quite stunning, and she is by no means a mediocre musician. There are just some things I can't get past, mainly the inventive diction, throaty lower middle (which sort of mangles the language), and inelegant coloratura. The recent Elisir didn't compliment her too well, but I must say her Decker Traviata is pretty fab. I'm looking forward to her Tatiana (and rumored Iolanta) next season, so I guess i'm a *sort of* fan ;)
Katherine could easily be a great dancer to rival Darcy Bussell she is a fantastic sexy siren, the best from the Uk, she so should have won, I think the voting was fixed!!
Exactly. BTW - I really do like Ms Yende very much. I actually do agree with some of the criticism of Netrebko (e.g. her coloratura) even while I like her timbre, but she is a great example of a beautiful singer for this ignorant and arrogant teenager (?), Therealmensa. Pretty Yende is actually quite pretty too.
@MasterIsh91 ...because she's nervous, ..well wouldn't you be too? The Queen might have been looking out of the window at her..and anyway Katherine is lovely and everything and she got singing lessons at The Royal Academy of Music, so where did you get yours?..and anyway your mind might be unstable Mister, so there!
I think Katherine would be a great pick for the part of Prince Vlodimir Orlov in the ENO production of Turandot, don't let trouser roles put you off, she is a well fit bird, but it would suit her voice and her high academic standards and charicterisation.
I liked it, of course Luciano performed it better because it was written for him, but she certainly is entertaining, and talented, and very wealthy for someone who others think wabbles her voice. You know the ones who pick at the bones of the dead, and declare themselves as the true representatives of the opera world.
I will never understand why the hell will soprano ever preforms tenor part? I mean did you ever heard any tenor sining Queen of the night aria? And she really is talented and got beautiful voice. Did you critics heard her sining I believe with Andrea Bocelli?
@JGrimshawProductions Really?.wow was it good?..and was The Queen looking out of the window?.oh and did she have a collection box near the stage?...I'd have put £100 in, if, I had have been there.
Yes, thank you for this moment in time update, but of course I was referring to a great tenor voice and not Mr. Pavarotti specifically, and quite frankly his performance was much more magnificent while he was still among the living.
@MasterIsh91 Well anyway in an interview Katherine does not claim to be an opera singer, she said that she hopes to be, one day, so I'd guess she's a popera/classial singer, though I know nothing about singing technique etc. nevertheless she sounds good to me. Please, can't you find anything good about her performance? I have no reason to doubt your singing credentials at RNC, Manchester, so I might just listen to you singing,..you'd better be good Mister haha
Funny, if people prefer amplified sound so much why is the concert Broadway Unplugged in NYC where the Broadway performers sing without amplification is always sold out? Really, you are totally ignorant about opera, why do you want to talk about something you don't know anything about? But really, you are in love with KJ, we got it, no need to put down a genre you don't know absolutely anything about to praise your idol.
Actually, if you think that these ladies are not very well off financially you are sadly mistaken, I am not even sure KJ has a bigger net worth than say Netrebko (money seems to be the only measure of success in your book). And if you think that KJ doesn't want to get into an opera company, you clearly haven't read her interviews when she said how it was her dream to sing Carmen and Cherubino at La Scala. She simply was never good enough for opera, this is why it wasn't her major at RA.
LOL - Broadway has its own theaters singers and fans, opera has its own theaters, singers and fans, though there is a huge overlap between fans. Opera doesn't need to be defended, it existed before you were born and will exist long after you are gone. Given how KJ keeps talking about her dreams of singing in opera (google, plenty of her interviews there), she does care. As to Netrebko, my point was that her looks didn't hurt her opera career, yet you claim that KJ's looks hurt her. Logic?
She is so qualified she has a masters degree in Opera and opera production from the Royal College of Music, she is a genius and more qualified than the screaming bints you so revere
LOL, I am wondering if you are being purposely nasty towards opera fans to start arguments. Funny how the looks never hurt Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Juan-Diego Florez,Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros, Danielle DeNiese, Renee Fleming and zillion other good-looking opera singers. For some reason people just singled out poor KJ for her looks, but didn't mind good looks when it came to others. Oh, and have you ever seen how Anna Moffo looked like? But hey, don't let me confuse you with facts.
I think.. she has a beautiful voice, and she is pretty... she has some technical problems, i think. I dont like her high notes (not by this aria) , her vibrato is too much esp by high notes. It is the first aria from her what I like. But tell the truth is not a good opera singer's level. Okay, she is a popera singer, BUT she uses classical techincs, so it is not en excuse.Andrea Bocelli is also a popera singer. But i do think she can be really good. I love her voice
True you have faults and they make you AWFUL. I'm not angry or defending Katherine, I only meant to give you constructive advice, hoping it will help you end your long fruitless Quixote journey to become an opera singer. It worked!!! You've taken my "look in the mirror" advice and agree with me. Thank God - good for you, good boy. Acknowledgement is the first step. Now take the next and final step, end the journey. You may continue howling like a dog, just don't do publicly.:))
Hm no... Again, show the ad where the Met says they have a Happy Hour every time. You've never even been to an opera house, yet you attack a genre you no absolutely nothing about. Not only that you went to the videos of opera singers and posted a disparaging comment about opera in general without even bothering to listen to actual singers. Then you accuse me of lying.
If KJ stopped idolizing Villazon (*not* a good role model for vocal longevity), found and actual pedagogue to fix her technique (and not one of the "celebrity" coaches on Britain's Got Talent etc.) she would be able to sing opera in smaller houses. Obviously there's a voice there, but all of these mannerisms and manipulations make it impossible for her to sustain a consistent projected line (without a microphone, that is)
For a real masterpiece, and a song that fits her voice beautifully, check out RU-vid "Katherine Jenkins Quello Che Farro" (Everything I Do - Italian) If you can get through the terrible introduction from VEVO, it is one of the most MAGNIFICENT videos on RU-vid!
Well, we've already established through our enlightening detour into Bob Dylan that in addition to knowing absolutely nothing about opera you appear to know little about any style of music, so I won't bore you with the specific reasons that I dislike the interpretations of Netrebko. But, again, the idea that it has to do with looks is ludicrous. I recently attended the debut of the gorgeous and talented Pretty Yende, and I plan to see her many times in the future.
Oh another thing. As a mensa member (if you are) you should know that the word "pop" comes from "popular", so in pop music popularity is super-important. Then you proceed that KJ is somehow better than pop singers yet your arguments are all about popularity. Classical music has never been judged on popularity, but I guess the difference between popularity is artistry is beyond you. Incidentally, Coca Cola is popular too, does it mean it's great or good for you or healthy?
Ahhhh, see, you've used a bad example. Salome is, compositionally, one of the most innovative for it's use of chromaticism. The music speaks entirely for itself. I've been to sold-out performances where everyone is wearing tuxedos and standing still(a concertized, not staged performance). The fact that some people only want nudity has nothing to do with the quality of the music. Some people just want to see KJ nude, but I won't use that as a reason why her music is subpar.
Actually, no it's not a straw man argument, it shows that popularity isn't the same as greatness. She isn't a great singer. If Miley Syrus is a bad example, there are plenty of others e.g. Justin Bieber. Again, you don't seem to understand the difference between entertainment and art as well as pop and classical. In pop, popularity today is a sign of artistic achievement, a single most important measure of success. In arts - be it dance, music, painting, popularity isn't the same as greatness.
Hzsl Let her be what she is a classical crossover singer. If you dont like her style then move on to something else. She is a good singer and she is pretty. She is in a fortunate place. Let her be. Not everyone is destined to become a star. She would hav not been permitted into the Royal Academy if she as a terrible singer, believe me.
It is ridiculous to call her fenomenally talented. Yes, she is beautiful. And unfortunately the beauty is the only think she has. Not her voice and technique. I'm sad of the fact that persons like her are nowadays called "a musicians". And people in general have no musical taste and no clue how real musicians should sing and look like! :(((
I just explained that to you! I've been to nearly a dozen sold-out performances of Salome in different cities, and these were concert performances that had NO dancing. At all. I don't know how someone with grandchildren thinks it's okay to call people they disagree with "bitches" and "tight-assed. " Really, you should be embarrassed to speak like that.
So? Opera isn't popular today. Neither is classical music or for that matter ballet. Doesn't mean it's not great art. Again popularity is feeling. What you are trying to prove is that KJ is popular so she must be better. Well, this is what POP genre is all about, and again it proves that she is a pop singer - you judge her by the standard of pop music. But there is also an increase in interest in opera in younger generation. And the Met HD broadcasts are still sold out.
