The former Sussex University professor Kathleen Stock, who resigned after protests over her views on gender identity, spoke to Iain Dale - and you can watch it in full here.
Kathleen Stock, a professor of philosophy, left the university after what she called "an absolutely horrible time" and "a very difficult few years".
Prof Stock recently published a book questioning the idea that gender identity is more "socially significant" than biological sex.
She rejects the claim that she or her work is transphobic.
"Why are you basically here?" Iain Dale asked.
Ms Stock explained that after she shared her views on "gender self-ID" she began to get "flack".
"I was worried, along with lots of other people, mostly women, that [gender self-ID] would make a difference in practice, because being a women, normally as understood in terms of sex, grants you access to changing rooms, domestic violence refuges, rape crisis shelters, prisons and so on," she said.
"And the idea was that this was all going to be unpicked and changed."

I realise now that Kathleen Stock's key issue is about safe-guarding of women. And that she was one of the people who first realised the disadvantages of self-declaring gender id and ill-thought out laws and regulations around it.

@@strangelittlegirl no, it's not working out perfectly well in other countries - lobbied politicians in some countries have made laws that the majority of the population do not agree with. Demonstrate any country where it is as you claim. But you don't get the point that the public realises only too well. That it is not self-identification that is the problem (it's not, you can tell yourself you are anything if you wish), it is the attempted imposition and changes that are being wrought on society. You think of yourself, but what do you think of women and girls, of their rights?

I think that the people who were objecting to Kathleen's position were not actually listening to what she was saying for the most part, particularly the trans folk who called in... They kept asking why she wanted to ban trans people from women's spaces and that trans people weren't causing injury. They refused to hear that she didn't want to ban trans people, that she didn't think that trans people were causing injury, that she wanted MEN out of women's spaces and that MEN caused injury. The trans people then condemned her for saying she wanted to ban trans people and that she thought trans people were causing injury...You could hear her frustration, I'm afraid that I would have found it very difficult to have been so diplomatic as she was...

Supporting 'Self ID' is like supporting the removal of lockable doors. Of course if no one had locks on their doors the vast, vast majority of people wouldn't go around walking into other people's houses and taking things, but unfortunately that small majority that would mean the rest of us have to put in some very minor safeguards against that. But having a lock on your door doesn't mean you are against the concept of people that don't live with you coming into your house, it doesn't make you anti-visitor. It's just a sensible way of keeping those would would do you harm away

@@stevenrichardson1843 all I know of her is that she lies and dissembles in interviews like this, including claiming she's been silenced as she goes from a bbc studio to lunch with a newspaper journalist, none of which involve any push back about her views or the events she describes. It doesn't endear me to her, but there are valid elements to her position. That actually makes it worse because her use of bad rhetoric just prevents any real discussion or progress.

Great debate and thankyou. I've worked around vulnerable adults and children most of my 20+ career and the current activists are dangerously short sighted. There will always be people in the world that commit crimes and hurt others trans or not, the only way to safeguard everybody is to have debates like these. However if you listen to the callers from both sides I think you can easily tell which are balanced opinions and which aren't. Kathleen you hit the nail on the head, the activists are only after a gotcha moment and will never alter any view they have,its like dogmatic religious zealots.

People seem get this whole debate wrong. It's not about being exclusionary against trans people. It's about protecting people from those who will use the self-identity laws/guildlines purely to commit crime and work the system to their own ends. Most of the callers were so irrational and even impertinent; and we can assume that they don’t realize they served primarily to bolster Prof. Stock’s authority and credibility. I feel sorry for Kathleen Stock, having to endure such tedious nonsense, but - even more - I feel grateful for her enduring commitment and action on behalf of women and LGB people. One thing I disagree on with Kathleen is the third type of changing rooms as a potential solution. As a tax payer, I don't want my money to fund someone's delusion. Give transwomen their own spaces and before long, there will be a demand for separate space for all 78+ (sorry, I lost track) genders. It's male or female. Let's stick with that.

JK Rowling's house address is not readily available online. She is very rich, ONE of the properties she owns is a historical castle. That is the property that is available online, and is shown in house tours you can pay for as a tourist. That is not JK Rowling's home address. JK Rowling was in fact doxxed, and during the protest outside of her actual home address, the protestors repeatedly showed her home and flaunted her address while her grandchildren were visiting her. Agree with her or not, that is a disgusting tactic and the myth that you can simply google where she lives actually feeds into transphobic rhetoric being that this lie is so easily disproven it leans into the stereotype that the trans community and it's allies are prone to lying and approving of harrasing women... stop it.

@@paolonutinisshoe The whole thing about pronouns seems rather silly to me. If I'm talking to someone then I use their name. If I'm talking about someone to another person, then I use a pronoun, but the person in question isn't there, so it hardly matters.

The BBC has this thing called "Producer Guidelines" which is essentially the gold standard for interviewers across the established media. These encourage people to challenge interviewees and to put them under pressure, rather than giving them an easy ride. I don't know how much or how little Iain Dale agrees with Prof Stock because he didn't express it, and he didn't give her an easy time. That's professional.

I heard Dale on the radio recently misrepresenting Stock. He claimed that her whole argument rested on men in dresses being dangerous in women's toilets. Either he is breathtakingly completely ignorant of the subject, stone deaf and didn't hear anything she said, or deliberately weighing in with the misogynists.

It's not unusual to share at least one viewpoint with someone you otherwise completely disagree with. All vegetarians and vegans share Hitler's belief that we shouldn't eat animals but we don't accuse them of sharing his anti-Semitic views. Very immature arguments.

OMG.... there's always a "Dave"! One of the best, well measured interviews on the subject I've seen. Unfortunately there will always be people who try to misrepresent her or put words in her mouth. I think the safeguarding/predatory argument is a bit of a red herring; I think it's more about spaces that provide for group privacy for (genuine) women. We are all entitled to our opinions on this, but it's a bit rich for such a tiny minority to expect to lay down the law for everyone else, and dictate what we should all think about these matters.

Phew, that's a brave woman submitting herself to questioning from the public on this subject. As a man, If I can self ID as a woman, I can also self ID as the Queen and demand royal treatment but will I get it? You might say I'm in dreamland and you certainly woulnd't write it into law. Identity is not only based on how I imagine I am, it is also based on how I am perceived. A genuine trans woman passing as a woman will never have a problem using a toilet for women.

This is honestly just embarrassing. I do believe that trans people have a right to exist and to access treatment when they become adults if they want to (although I really think there should be more research done into potential other treatments that don't involve hormones and surgery, so that people have more treatment options if they want to take them), but listening to fellow liberals on podcasts like this is truly embarrassing. The guilt by association guy was hard to sit through, it's such a weak argument. Kathleen isn't even saying anything particularly negative, she's literally saying that she approves of treatment for trans adults, that they have a right to privacy and fair treatment, that they shouldn't have to disclose that they're trans when not absolutely necessary, that they should be able to access resources and spaces that help them feel safe. She's very liberal. She's literally just saying, let's do all those things, but not at the expense of women.

True story : a couple of years ago a man went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains. They couldn’t find anything wrong with him. Then later it turned out he was pregnant. He didn’t bother to mention that he was trans ( a woman) . Now hospitals probably include that on the entry forms

It's not JUST about women and girls being attacked in changing rooms and the like. We simply need and want and deserve to have our own spaces. But one woman or girl attacked or abused is too many!! How can trans activists be ok with even just one girl or woman being hurt? Because they only care about themselves, is the only answer I can come up with.

Reading her book. It's great. Very deep - and actually unpicks some of the jargon that I'm sure some people who purport it cannot possibly understand, which is where it's very interesting. One callers refusal to acknowledge data speaks volumes here. These things matter, and I hope more women speak up about certain aspects of trans-activism. I think it's safe to say that, yet again, women are going to be dealing with the brunt of things when certain policies sink into the fabric...

Really want to thank Kathleen Stock for putting herself out there on behalf of women to protect our rights and keep us safe and for dealing with all the aggressive abuse from the bullying trans callers, like Katy, so gracefully. More and more women are signing up to prevent strident and aggressive trans activists from organisations like Stonewall bullying and intimidating women into silence while our rights our ridden over roughshod, the words used for our bodies is deleted and our uniqueness as mothers is erased, all with the support of short sighted, vote chasing, power hungry politicians. Assuming that you are just falling for the propaganda like most are; Yeah, selfID is baseless. So maybe cisgender people should stop using it, then? Like, the whole issue here is that cissies want to keep their precious gendered pronouns and gendered spaces, but just don't want to let non-conforming people use their same tools. If the cisgenders don't like the subjectivity with selfID, then they should join the non-conforming and ditch it. Trans people only use selfID to interface with cisgender-society because they demand it so much.

Might be because the argument is so one-sided. Trans-men don’t get nearly the same aggression targeted at them because it’s easier to pass the site test, if the women’s spaces though or whatever it is comes into play it would have to work for both sides, so then what happens to her safeguarding plans when a trans man enters a woman’s toilet or exits it and is scene? Activists are concerned for both genders

There would also be more chance of them being caught, people need to get out of the mentality that someone else will take care of it. If you think someone/hear someone and think they’re in trouble, there’s nothing wrong with asking and if you still feel uncertain call the police. Putting in more security measures to make it easier to contact local security would be a great start. Call this number for the police, call this number four shopping centre security etc.
