Composing, writing, singing.... true artist..... story telling with heart....traveling America & pioneering country music for female artists.....thank you for paying a price....making a path for others. Your gift has made room for you in the Halls of Country Music & most of all in the hearts of Americans.
@Gameplay Today - When I was a kid, I thought that she wrote Boots of Spanish Leather, and since my mom was a huge fan, I grew up knowing every song by heart. When I heard Bob Dylan sing it, I got really pissed & apparently told my mom “this man ruined Nanci’s song!” I was then distraught to learn it was, in fact, his song. It’s ok though, I grew into a deep appreciation for Dylan’s music and love to hear it covered. But no one will ever replace Nanci in my heart. The first lullaby I sang to my nieces the day each of them was born Little Love Affairs - When I wake in the night And find that I'm dreaming You're the first thought in mind Love's a fair weather friend when You're lonely You are my summer state of mind (Chorus:) Does it sing to you nightly? Does it lay down beside you? Does it make you hear songs On the radio? It once was my shadow Grown Weary of travel Till you gave it home When my parents renewed their vows in Ireland on their 25th anniversary, the couple who owned the B&B where we stayed threw a big celebration for them at Kate Kearney’s Cottage in Killarney. Not even knowing about how much we loved Nanci, the band played “From Claire to Here” for them. You very rarely cross paths with another fan of hers in the states, but my favorite thing about Ireland was that it was hard to find someone who wasn’t a fan. 😢
@@DrAnderson1 the key is that the singer sings the song from the heart with the intent of the song writer in mind. kris Kristofferson wrote the song about a sunday morning coming down. kris wrote it for johnny cash to sing. john did. kris dis and so did the highwaymen john kiris waylon and willie.
I am amazed at the number of people commenting here cannot simply appreciate a song sung with sincerity by a beautiful performers feel the need to criticize, particularly those saying that because Nanci Griffith wrote it she and only she should sing it. How terribly negative and narrow minded. Both Nanci and Kathy are great artists and performers who speak to the world through through music, giving us their wonderful gift. Those who write songs, or poetry, or novels, or whatever, do so with the desire to share their work with others. I've heard it said that there is no greater honor than to have your work performed by others. There are few gifts greater than the gift of music. Cherish it, appreciate it, give if freely.
I hate being the one to tell you this but you can quote me on it if the need arises. In general, People are assholes. That's it. What more needs be said? You can't fix it, why dwell on it.
Yes, nauticalguy1. I've never met Nancy Griffith but I'm a devoted follower, so I'll take a leap. The classy artist that she is, I'm confident that nobody loves Kathy's copy of Five & Dime more than Nancy. To think otherwise requires the dimensions of a very small mind. Not that rivalries never happen; half a century ago, Paul Simon waxed snarky on the Mike Douglas TV Show. He was obviously miffed at the fact that S & G's 59th St Bridge Song was a far greater success for Harper's Bizarre than it was for him and Art Garfunkle. Sometimes it happens that way, but Simon wasn't happy about it. No shade on the immortal Paul Simon, but it wasn't his finest day. Just think of Simon's pompousness for what it was-- the exception to the rule.
I'm totally with you R J Norgard. I play and sing everyones elses songs. Once in a while I entertain someone that way. My dog was giving me a hard time about going to bed, just last night . I grabbed my guitar and played the song I wrote to her, ...she jumped into the air, landing squarely in the middle of the bed. Cat Stevens' very first hit was a song called, " I Love My Dog". Music is of the soul, and almost always about love. It should be shared.
I not only love this song, I love all of Kathy Mattea's songs. I wish the radio would play this kind of music again. Not too long ago, I saw an interview about you being your Moms caregiver. I had that opportunity as well. love you Kathy and I love your new album, "Coal." You truly are a woman of substance.
Some years ago I saw these group live and she sang this song. It stuck in my mind and a Google search turned up Nanci Griffith. Nancy had many u-tube hits and I believe I saw them all. She was stunning. Kathy's version of Five and Dime is just as stunning.
Kathy Mattea is one of the greatest artists in country music, in my opinion. I have always loved and appreciated her music so much! She has such a beautiful and mellow voice and is a great guitarist as well. I love me some Kathy Mattea!
Absolutely beautiful. I saw Ms. Kathy Mattea in concert (Sonoma County) 1989 or 90 when I was 17 years old and her voice is still amazing and very important to hear. I know all of her songs by heart and this is my favorite.
I saw her at about the same time. It was at the Luther Burbank Theater of Performing Arts in Santa Rosa, California. Might have been the same show? It was one of the best shows I have ever seen. At one point, she decided to give the band a break. After they left the stage for a few minutes, she pulled up a stool and sat down and sang a song Acapella. I have yet to this day heard anything to compare! She remains my favorite female vocalist and I long for the day to see her again.
May Nanci Griffith have flown away to heaven, having caught some blackbird’s wing, with every sweet bluebonnet spring awaiting her arrival. It would be a fitting & proper tribute to her life and all she left us with if amazing, talented artists like Kathy Mattea continue to cover her music & breathe new life into her lyrics with the same brilliance as this. Never to be forgotten, aNGel. Nancy Caroline Griffith July 6, 1953 - August 13, 2021 “These days your face, in my memory, is in the folded hands of grace against these times”
I was partners in a music company in Nashville in the 80s. Mainly, we did jingles for radio & tv spots. Kathy was waiting tables at Fridays. She also sang both demos and final spots. Aside from her obvious talent, she was an absolutely kick-ass lady. A pleasure to work with. I was so glad when she got big.
Beautiful to hear Kathy sing this song again. The years have only made her voice more expressive. She remains one of the best performers I have ever heard live.
She is someone who should of been recognized in country music more so then she was. I have always loved her music and voice. She was right when she said the guys kinda took over those years.
This is my mom and dad. He's 71 and she's 70. They've been together since early teens married for 52 yrs, 4 kids, 6 grandkids and 2 great grandkids later....dad has been in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. Get better Dad
@@lewisc215 Lewis thanks for sharing that. A friend of mine and I sat through a bad storm to see Kathy Mattea. I am surprised they did not stop the concert but happy they didn't. Kathy is an awesome singer.
Simply divine! Thanks for sharing this performance with those of us who couldn't be there. Ms. Mattea is and has always been a class act, a truly beautiful soul.
They came out at the same time. Saw both of them in concert. Different artists. Can't compare. Frankly I think Kathy is easier to watch and listen too.
I listened to Nanci sing this song on one of her earliest cassettes long before I ever heard of Kathy Mattea. Before her long version came out on the live Anderson Fair album. Nanci wrote it.
Yep, You are absolutely right. I like them both but Kathy is one of MY faves. Nothing to argue over. Nancy is a great writer and story teller. I saw them both in concert the same year.
Nancy was singing, writing and performing in Texas and Boston long before Kathy Matea ever heard of her. Some here don't know the depth and breadth of Nancy. At one time, I had every cassette she ever did. Including one from the late 1970's with There's A Light Beyond these woods Mary Margret. My all time favorite Nancy song is "Michael's Song. If you know that one, you do really go back a ways. When I moved and retired to Florida Iost a lot of my treasures
I remember Mary Margaret and saw her and her wonderful band in concert in Orange County (CA) I may know Michaels' Song....my memory isn't as good as it used to be. We all have our faves. Respect Nancy's talent. I relate to Kathy's personality. Her latest, or maybe not, is an album about Coal Mining. Her family worked in the coal mines...both of them, along with me, seem to be in an era that's over. I never thought hip hop and rapping would last. Argh! Katia P.S. I lost my treasures too. Thank goodness for youtube. Will listen to Michaels' Song.
You have never really heard this lady until you see and hear her live. I got the pleasure of seeing her at Starwood in Nashville Tn way back when she was just hitting it big. We were listening and needing a beer real bad so we waited until she( so we thought) took a break. The band had walked off the stage and we thought the show was over so we got up and started heading to concessions for our beer. Then all of a sudden she started to sing another song only acapella. We waited and ended up not even moving it was that good. I have yet to hear a singer with the voice I heard that day it was simply put Perfection of sound. If you ever get the chance to see her go you will not be sorry.
Her, Nancy Griffith & Suzy Boggus can totally pick the crap out of a guitar and it seems second nature to them-??????? PHENOMINAL, MUSICAL ENTERTAINERS, IMO... (ALL of them, Ladies)-!!! HUGE FAN-!!!!!!! 🙂😆👍✌
Never heard Kathy's version, and I'm here for it. RIP Nanci. You were one of my faves and you made my life so much better. Your lyrics, your voice and your nuance was brilliant to experience. Thank you.
Kathy, Would have been nice that you mentioned the person that actually wrote this song. Thanks to Nancy Griffith for actually wrote this song and also performed it live as well!
Wow. Her voice sounds fantastic... better than when she was young. And in particular it sounds great considering the microphone is not set up like studio mikes... Excellent. Also nice, clear video. Thanks for posting this....
World-Class performance. Off the charts for quality in vocal performance and Picking. Every time I watch and listen, I see where we want to go with our band. My dreams in music find inspiration in this performance. Nemo
kathy is a very special artist.there is something very unique about her. not just a brilliant singer and guitarist, but also obviously a lovely person, even more, numinous!
This is and will always be Nancis song. Nice rendition but not up to snuff. The original can not be topped. sorry, she is just too cute and simply beautiful. It can not be improved on.
There are a LOT of wonderful singers who don't get proper exposure, like Kathy Mattea. It's a lot of chance and serendipity, and if you're what Nashville wants to promote.
Nanci might have written it but writers and performers are different species. Love Nanci, great song writer like so many others. They rely on popular recording artists to bring there work to recognition . Kathy does this song Great justice.
You should have been listening to me DJ'ing at KCAR back in 1988! I played Kathy Mattea music every day! ;-) Glad you found this great by an amazing artist!!!
