About the Film
Part classical, part avant-garde, part flamenco - the legendary piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque are impossible to label. The documentary film "The Labèque Way" follows these unique artists as they trace their Basque roots, playing Ravel´s Bolero with traditional Basque percussion, premiering a daring new concerto “Nazareno” which they had commissioned, and participating in diverse artistic and personal adventures. Featuring friends and collaborators such as Sir Simon Rattle, Semyon Bychkov and Alessandro Baricco among others, the film includes amazing performances, such as an exciting performance of The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

Thanks for uploading that documentary to YT. It captures something that "traditional" documentaries fail to do : fleeting emotions, bits of life in and between performances, all with very few words. I guess the director and the team behind the movie are genuine artists, not art historians. Kudos!

The sisters were famous also in Japan, but decades ago. I have been wondering how active they are. I'm happy about this video. I feel relieved.

Once upon a time, it must have been about 1981, I was taking an elective course at Orange Coast College in Southern California. I can't remember the name of the course, but it was essentially "history of rock and roll". I really enjoyed the class, and one day the instructor asked me and the 3 girls I sat next to in class to help him make a decision. He asked us if he should hire Mahavishnu Orchestra, or someone else (I can't remember who it was... Tommy Tutone?). Well, I had heard a Mahavishnu record, and was aware of John McLaughlin's guitar awesomeness, at least dimly, so I convinced our little group to choose Mahavishnu. So, a couple months later, they came. The opening act was the Labeque sisters. None of us had heard of them, and the audience was not interested in a couple of grand pianos facing each other. The girls were introduced, and they sat and began playing, very softly. One would play a little, and the other would play a sort of "answer". Each time, it built just a little in loudness, and complexity. The audience ignored them, simply talking right over them. I was actually getting very annoyed, because it sounded like they were playing beautifully, but I couldn't really hear it. But it kept building, and soon these sisters were raging on the pianos, and the audience suddenly hushed. There was a momentary break in the musical piece, a dramatic pause, and you could hear a pin drop. The audience was now captivated, and gave standing ovations after each of the 3 or 4 pieces they played. It was an amazing performance that I will never forget! Then Mahavishnu was introduced, and one of the Labeque sisters was in that band. The audience saw John McLaughlin sit classical style on a stool with a classical acoustic guitar, and began talking rudely again, showing no interest for the act that they paid to see. And then McLaughlin ripped into an incredibly intricate guitar solo, essentially "shredding" on classical guitar, and suddenly the audience was again riveted for the rest of the show... It was very memorable for me, the first time I ever had my socks really blown off. The only other musical act who has done that to me was the first time I saw Jeff Beck, which was a couple years later, in 1983.
