My son graduated from UVA a few years ago. It's evolved a lot since these celebrities were in Charlottesville. There is thankfully more diversity and less snobbery.
I graduated from there not too long ago. I don’t know how much worse it was before my time, but it still was pretty pretentious while I was a student there. I am a minority, and I definitely was reminded of my difference every time I went to class, despite being born and raised in America. Nonetheless, it was still a good experience, and could’ve definitely been worse and perhaps even more violent if it were a different time.
I graduated in the 80s. I didn't find it snobby at all. I found a SUBculture of snobbiness, but most people were just regular folks. Certainly more snobs than at my public high school though.
Watson here!!! I must say UVA was great when I went there eons ago. But I am sad to see the direction in which UVA is heading. It has been unnecessarily pouring money into a mediocre athletics program while ignoring academics. When I went there, UVA used the be rated the #1 public school in the country (tied with Berkeley) and #20 overall. It has since slipped or stayed at the same ranking each subsequent year while other schools have passed us by (e.g. UCLA). Amidst Presidential scandals, poor performing athletics, poor rankings, the ENTIRE Board of Visitors needs to be fired and major reforms need to be put in place. It makes me sad to see the school the way it is, TJ would be ashamed. I have stopped donating money to this school and would rather place it somewhere else with more promise.
lol, UVA has been alternating between being the #1 and #2 public university for years, and is currently --gasp-- ranked 23rd in the nation overall. but go ahead and keep your money, it's not like we don't have plenty.
That's great! Although it'd be more convincing if the alumni association didn't pester me with unsolicited emails and pamphlets asking me for money. Also let's keep it real, UVa hasn't been #1 for a long time and when I went there, the school was #20 overall...so if you call that progress so be it.
Paul Rachel Paul, US News and World Report has had UVA ranked as the NUMBER 1 or 2 Public School for years, since the days I went there (CLAS 94), and ranked around 20-25 overall. Nothing's changed. Also, the athletic program damn near won the Sears cup last year, narrowly losing out when baseball failed to win the College World Series. Outside of football, I would hardly call our athletics "mediocre".
Do you think you could have gotten in if you reapplied this year? My friend got accepted into Princeton and was straight rejected, not even waitlisted, from uva. It's certainly gotten a lot tougher.
She was probably only rejected because they found out she applied to Princeton. UVA probably figured she would never choose them over Princeton so why waste the admit. Admissions tends to think that way.
Tina does not know what studying abroad is really like until you have gone to a carney(otherwise known as the Hairfair) thirty miles outside of C-ville.Try mid sixties. It was the essence of deep southern incipient Faulknerism. 'Say have you heard who is hidden in the attic?' Two generations ago UVa was all men and much more southern than it is now. I was a 'Yankee' from Tony Soprano country, On the very first episode of the sopranos I realized I used to swim in the very river where they threatened the medical guy. I arrived at UVa with a shiny sharkskin suit with slanted pockets. Hey it was OK for Frank Sinatra. After four years I was glad to leave UVa and thought i would never go back. But now I think.... In the public forum people are taught to ridicule the former Wasp Establishment as all-kinds-of-bad. It is one fo the few groups you can openly dislike and disparage. Good job out there. follow the leader. Get your hints from TV shows and act accordingly. But(here it comes) over the years I have come to really respect UVa as an unregenerate institution of higher learning. UVa is unique in that it has not climbed on board the lemming bus of Higher Ed and gone full bore weasel and turned on its founders....yet. But the long knives are out for UVa. Witness the last few comments right here, condemning UVa before it has even been convicted. "Is UVa accused of sexual misconduct? Must be guilty. Look at how it acts!!! Close UVa down. At least get rid of those...what do you call them? ...fraternities!" We live in an age of lemmings where conformity of opinion is rigidly enforced( by employment consequences), and the facts do not matter. Where are the recantations from the accusing commenters? Wah f**kin' Hoo(the Jersey form)
9 years later...they've renamed Alderman Library because they decided to cancel him. They're working their way through all the founders just as you predicted
Interesting. If Katie and Tina were in the same class, I feel like they would probably not have ever crossed paths. Sorority girl Katie and theatre geek Tina.
Contrary to the way it was in Katie's day, it is now tougher for in-state students to get accepted into this state tax supported school (unless their parents attended). Out of state students are charged more in tuition !............
My son moved into Kellogg in August 2011. Dorm for first-years was at most 2 years old. Two other nearly-near dorms in vicinity. The earthquake with epicenter in Mineral, Virginia, hit on their first day of class. Go, 'Hoos.
I don't care if you dont like her as an actress or an entertainer..? what you said just made no sense. So i'm guessing you're a republican ok, do you have any idea how common it is to publicly state your political views if you are a celebrity or just famous for some reason. That's all she ever did and i am sure you wouldn't have cared if she'd have the same opinions as you. you dont have to agree with her but you can't shame her for stating her democracy publicly, that is obviously crazy
