Katrin is a mother of a 3-year-old daughter and is expecting her second daughter soon. While her 3-year-old is fully vaccinated against measles, she worries about her unborn baby daughter, who will have to wait to be vaccinated against measles until she approaches her first birthday. For Katrin there is no question: she will vaccinate her child - but until she can, she will have to rely on others to vaccinate their children.
Measles, a highly infectious vaccine-preventable disease, remains one of the leading causes of childhood mortality globally. To prevent the measles virus from spreading and causing dangerous outbreaks, at least 95% immunization coverage with 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine is needed every year in every community, as well as efforts to reach children, adolescents and adults who missed routine vaccination in the past. The measles vaccine has been in use for over 50 years. It is safe, effective and inexpensive.
Katrin cannot manage to protect her newborn child alone. It takes all of society to ensure that the virus cannot reach her.
