Katsushika Hokusai is perhaps the best known Japanese artist in western art history, and as such his work played an important role in the development of what we now call modern art. European artists such as Van Gogh, Degas and Manet were all influenced by his work with its bright colours, flowing shapes and love of nature. This next part in our Understanding Modern Art series looks at the role this non western artist played in the development of western art.

Japanese culture and art fascinate me. Isn't it marvelous, how people were making paper from plant fibers before the year 800 C.E., when we in the west had only parchment made from animal skin? And they were making so many wood block prints with color in the seventeenth Century that folks who were not very wealthy could have them in their homes.

Been a while since the last one but were finally back with a look at Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his impact on the development of modern art. Hopefully I didn't get too much wrong, Japanese art is, like most things, complex enough to warrant a six hour video but in the interests of time and maintaining my sanity we have to be somewhat concise. Feel free to let me know if there's any egregious mistakes and enjoy my terrible pronunciations. I had enough trouble with the French lads, never mind the Japanese. Also while i'm here, thank you to everyone who has subscribed! We're well over the thousand mark now and going strong. For the first time ever I will be sticking to a release schedule so check back each month for new videos, starting with Van Gogh in March. Thanks again for all the support, the views and the nice(and the not so nice!) comments. All of it has encouraged me to keep going and develop this channel into a useful resource for anyone interested in visual art. Any feedback you have is useful so let me know in the comments and thanks again!

I learned to love Japanese art when I was stationed there in the navy in the late 60s. I still love it. Thanks for this bit on Hokusai.

Rewatching this after watching the Van Gogh video makes the influence Hakusai had on him more noticeable. Especially the Horizontal layers of fore ground, mid ground and background. And the vertical trees connecting the earth and sky in the paintings at 6:25 & 11:34 and 7:15 of this videos bring to mind Van Gogh's use of the Cyprus tree in his paintings.

Well done, again!! Thank you!! Re Prussian blue - why does modern Prussian Blue look so ugly in colour when held against the prints (original) which look bright and vibrant? (Maybe an episode on paint colours & their history?!)
@theartshole311
@theartshole311 4 года назад
An episode on paint colours sounds like a great idea, as for modern Prussian blue the colour quality can vary wildly by manufacturer. When it comes to paint there's a big difference between artists quality and the more commonly available standard quality paints you'll find in most art shops so that might explain some of the difference.

@@theartshole311 Any thoughts on john constable? He's been a sort of guilty pleasure for so long. I'd love to see you're take on it.

I'm a bit of a fan of Constable myself, there's a few of his pieces in the Hugh lane Gallery in Dublin I've been admiring for years and I love landscape painting from that era in general, especially Turner. So yes I will definitely do one one on him, could be a while though. Will be doing a few bits on Romanticism some time soon so might cover a bit of his work then.

Heres the thing ive seen this painting my entire life but never did i do reserach or knew the person behind the painting until i played a game called Fate Grand Order, without the amount of awesome characters some of them i have never heard about i just had to do research. As a huge fate fan and a huge fan of history in general this is possibly one of my favorite historical figures.

Only vaguely familiar with the whole Fate thing, think I saw a couple of episodes of the anime many years ago. Is Hokusai a character in it or something? A historical battle royal featuring painters from across centuries is something I never knew I wanted until now

@@theartshole311 no Fate grand order is way different than the anime, ok the anime mostly covers the stories behind many of the characters seen in fate grand order. Just think of fate grand order as a fighting game like street fighter and mortal Kombat, but this time it adds characters that where either in the original anime or not. Fate is a complex series because it isn’t like other anime where their is multiple series. It’s like tolkein for example Lotr comes right after the hobbit but then theirs books and games that take place after or before Lotr. So its basically like that because the anime series fate mentions allot of charcters and things that are never shown in the anime because the informations is so long and complex. So that’s why they fate grand order, the only problem is some charcters are rare to get so your going to be purchasing allot of quartz and once you get that rare character you’ll find out why. But to answer your question no the series isn’t necessarily in order, just like history itself you can’t just type medieval times and expect to get all information about the Middle Ages. This is the same thing with fate not every single information is connected and even if they were it still isn’t the same. Anyway I highly suggest you get into the series I think it’s the best anime series ever especially the music is just amazing it’s like a better version of all of those famous jrpgs final fantasy, Zelda, and so much more. Also after you watch the animes play fate grand order eventhough it will be a pain in the ass at first, but eversince aniplex owns fate grand order they have been making these special events to get the cool characters. Theirs still a few I’m missing and I hope I will get them in the future.

@@theartshole311 lastly to answer your question about Hokusai, their are allot of characters that were never seen in the anime as I know of. For example Abigail Williams, Hokusai, Tomoe Gozen, Okita Souji and so much more. I haven’t done research about these characters because it’s a pain in the ass but if I would have to guess maybe it’s a character that they added here which they would later put on in the other fate animes. Yeah I’ve only seen fate stay night and apocrypha. No she isnt and Hokusai and many historical characters in fate are female for some odd reason, no she isnt a fighter shes just a character heres an example of what i mean. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uHbYlZm42uk.html You see the reason why lots of the male historical figures are females is because of the fan service this is why they made stuff like fate/protype which is a novel series where Saber is supposed to be male and Shirou the main character is supposed to female but named something else amazing series but see what i mean. I like this idea of making the characters female because for example Atilla the hun is female in here however she isnt your evil psycopathic killer anymore thats why shes named Altera because its sound of a heroic name than Atilla.
