It’s fascinating to see how flies were tied before the use of all the gadgets we now use in modern fly tying. This gentleman is a master with decades of experience, and it shows in his level of comfort when tying the fly. May we please see more of this man’s talent!? It would be interesting to see his progression when learning how to use a vise with modern tools. Would he even accept the opportunity to modernize?
Transplanted Midwesterner missing his PA trout streams living now at the foothills of the Sierras and need something new. This looks pretty pure. Tenkara makes perfect sense out here as most of the water appears to be pocket water and you've got to hike your butt off to find fish. Desolation wilderness, Tahoe regions, etc. tough for a newbie like me. Took me long enough to learn the PA ropes let alone try to tackle CA fly streams. Pretty cool tying your own eyes on eyeless hook. May try it.
I like your technique, no vice. I am Scottish, I have tied flied for 40 years, no vice. Clyde style, Loch style. I learned as a poor teenager, I had no money for a vice. I now have 2 very good vices, I cannot use them I still tie on my hands. its good to see another guy using his hands and fingers only. How small can you tie?
Amazing, but I can't help but think he would get the flies tied much faster if he did use a vise to hold his flies. He may not be going for production. He may like the control he has tying in hand. I couldn't do it. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean
Wow! Finally I've found some people who also tie viceless or in-hand. I've been doing it since January and I absolutely love it!!! I've tied down to a 20 and largest I've tied would be a size 2 Clouser for fishing in Mexico. None of my flies are ugly. I just love the fact that I can tie in the boat or on the bank in minutes.
Does Mr. Katsutoshi Amano never use a vise and always ties flies by hand ? The video text says size hook size ~10, but the hook package appears to say size 8. Is the sizing different in Japan or different for eyeless hooks ?? Thanks for posting this tying method.
I started 50 years ago fly tying and used a vice ,choice enough ,regal ,thompson,what this guy doing is making something easy very difficult and you can only ty big fly s this way
Ok is this a demonstration of tying the particular fly? or showing off his skill of viceless tying? What I want to know is, why is it his followers here at Tenkara USA still use a vice? and it doesn't look like they plan to give them up in the near future. What I see from this video is he's showing how simple it can be. Dr. Ishigaki also shows his skill and speed. From neither have I been able to grasp their methods of Reverse hackle. Many production tyers can tie crazy fast. but their not trying to teach. Lets see less of the tyer and more of the tying.
