Udawlawe is famous for the large number of wild elephants found in the park scatters as small groups and large herds. Elephants and other animals are attracted to the park largely due to the Udawalawe tank (reservoir), which is the main source of water for animals right throughout the year. As a result of the dry climatic conditions Udawalwe National Park has a unique type of vegetation.
The easiest way to get to Udawalawa from Colombo is to come through Awissawella, Ratnapura, Palmadulla and along the Embilipitiya road. You need to take a left turn from Udawalawe junction at Thimbolketiya and proceed along the Thanamalwila road. The drive from Colombo could take approximately 4 hours.
