@@Justthemow It surprised me and John too that they do a nice finish cut as well. But you wouldn't really want those winglets hanging down all day. In regular yards they would have a high likelihood of catching something. Hang tight, I think there's a surprise coming from Kavli...
Installed these on a riding mower ru-vid.comUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.
I just got my Finisha blades for my mower, and replaced the Beast blades. The Beast Blades hardly showed any wear, except where I hit some rebar, but still not major damage. My deck was very clean, after a season of mowing, and I could have left the blades on for another season, without much quality loss, but changed them to inspect my mower. There was a fingertip of old grass in the blade corners, which I plucked out with my fingers, but everything else was surprisingly clean. The new blades didn’t look hardly any different, but surprised me with an excellent finish cutting, on a single cut. I would never go back to factory blades, because I have never been stopped by an overloaded deck, no mater the height of the growth. I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to another superior product. Now that I have my new blades, I will have my John Deere dealer change my blades, while servicing my machine, every season. At 74 years old, crawling around on the ground, is way to painful for me.
I had the same thing with a bit of grass buildup in the blade corners, but you get the same thing happening on Gator blades. I always get some grass stuck on the teeth on those. I think that regular mowing is probably removing and reclogging those areas over and over and it's normal. Certainly doesn't effect performance. Glad they are working out for you.
Something 2LookAt my results also. Hard to comprehend if a person hasn’t seen your videos. Leaves my yard like a fairway, don’t have the right type of grass, for a green! These blades almost make me think I’m running a Skaggs mower. Lot of power, no strain, very productive, love mowing, finally!
Got my Kavli blades yesterday couldn't wait to put them on my ride on . Mike is right there is not a blade out there you can compare it to. It surpassed all my expectations it did better than those hogs with one pass. Unbelievable bloody amazing as every one is saying. I am telling everyone that will listen. I am sure those blade manufacturers are going to be watching and scratching their heads. Thanks Mike!!!
With tall grass and brush and normal blades, the grass is pushed down and the blades pass over requiring a second and third pass. With these down turned wings, it takes up and chops the tall stuff in one pass !! Great product, why didn't anyone think of it before ????👍👍👍👍
Exactly! And yes, perfect description of what is happening. I wish I had explained that in the video but I didn't realize it until after. You really DO want the winglets sticking down below the edge of the deck! Yes. It's genius. :)
They didn't think of it because finish mowers are not designed to cut 8+ inches of grass. The deck and spindles are not robust enough for true brush hogging.
Wow, those blades are amazing... I agree with B&M Land Management CO's assessment, those wings seem to cut the brush that has been pushed over by the mower deck. That one change seems to have made a major difference in the ability of the mower to become a "bush hog". Thanks for the video , it was very cool to watch. Keep those videos coming... really enjoy them for some reason!!
I agree. If you can dedicate a mower to brush hog cutting really tall grass and weeds this is a real time saver since you don’t have to double mow to get the tall stems. But they also leave a pretty ragged finish cut. So probably not suitable for normal lawn maintenance.
Go to production now I need those I cut around 15 acres a week just like the stuff your cutting above your head with my 72's. Game changer.... customer waiting
Very innovative Blades. The turn down wing continuously chips away at brush pushed over and laid down by the deck. The wings probably helps to detain large clippings under the mower so they can be further pulverized before they can escape. This could become the style of the future.
Just an observation, building on my prior post - people have commented that the winglets serve to chop up material that is laying down. I think they serve a dual purpose: If you've ever seen a pasture 'windrower' or 'tedder', it features downward-pointing tines that sweep grass out of the path into neat rows for collection. The winglets kick the grass out AND chop it up before they can bind the blades and bog the mower down. Kavli is a genius.
Hey Mike, Boy, Let me Tell you I’m Impressed on how They Mulched all that Grass up with Ease. He Really Needs to Patton that Idea 💡 and start Thinking of Sales. He is Correct on what they are Great For .... Bush Hogging 👍🏻 Thanks for Sharing that Mike, I Enjoyed watching those Blades being put to the Test. Awesome Stuff, Take Care Mike & Be Safe Out Their 🇺🇸
That’s Great to Hear, By the Way, very Cool Design Idea on those Blades 👍🏻 Hope it Really works out for you. I would Definitely Purchase some for my 2 Wright Mowers for when I do Big Clean Ups. Good Luck .....
Watching you in action, convinced me to order a set. I’m waiting for my order now. They aren’t cheap, and you order the blades separately, prices are per blade. Which means you can order a replacement blade, if you don’t want a complete set. It’s still worth it, if you need them!
I knocked down 2.5 acres with my standard blades, but had to use half my deck, and cut the grass N/S, E/W, AND DIAGONALLY, and still had stragglers sticking up. After 3 mowings it was tamed. Used a lot of gas & time, and still didn’t do as well as you did. It was hard on my blades, too. I really look forward to my new blades!👍🏻👌🏻
I was so excited when i saw those blades lol. I started nudging my husband to look at them! LOL. You went over all that brush no problem. Didn't hear any bogging down, no binding, and the deck was nice and clean!. Those wing's really pushed that debris out like nothin. Almost like you were on a combine! LOL. Wonderful video, AWESOME blades!!!. ☺☺☺☺
Thank you very much RLROSE1986 we are hoping that the professional gardeners out there will be saying the same. We have had some feedback and it has been extremely positive.
This is cool, I have the exact same Craftsman 33" you have in other videos, that I use for cutting thick stuff just like this, instead of taking my mower or bush hog in it. Usually cutting between planted pines and fence lines. I need something like this on that mower since I use it as a brush mower. Thanks for the review.
I hope you have a patent on this idea. I think it's brilliant. It solves a big problem of mowing tall grass and weeds with a finish mower deck that pushes the tall stuff flat. If I were still in the business I would definitely use them for that kind of job.
I got mine & they do a great job on my John Deere Z540M. Did my front yard, and it looks perfect! Best yard in the neighborhood! I’m going to put them to work on 2&1/2 acre estate, tomorrow! Very wet Spring, 12 “ wet lawn! It never would’ve got that long, if I wasn’t mowing my yard, in between rains, & 80 degree weather!
Something 2LookAt yes, and I’m getting stripping out of them! I’ve hit quite a bit of small branches, over the season, & they just keep being smaller and fewer every time I mow! I have to travel to my daughter’s place, 55 miles away, and I don’t have time for BS! These get the job done, excellently, the first time! I do the 2.5 acres for free, for my Great Grandchildren’s safety! Working on a new Son-in-law!
Mike I just got my Kavli Beast blades from John. They arrived Friday. Used them yesterday and 1 time is all it took to sell me on the fact I’ll be ordering more sets from him. I also plan on trying a set of the finisha blades soon. I love these blades and they are appropriately named lol
Mike did tell you they were good. We try telling people but if you haven't used them you can't understand how good they really are. Thanks for making that public, cheers.
@@johnkavli8181 Mike did not lie about their abilities nor did you. I have an even better video planned for them as soon as it stops raining where I live.
If you have ever used an Oregon mulching blade then these make perfect sense, I had this very idea myself last night and then I find this video the next day lol! Brilliant xD
I could see those wings being useful. As you cut tall weeds with a regular blade the weeds will just lay flat and wont get cut but with the wings its able to grab the weeds and chop'em up.
That's pretty amazing. Ordinarily you would hear the motor change pitch as it fought against the buildup of grass, but here it sounds like your average weekly lawn cut. Was gonna comment about the winglets cutting the stuff that gets pushed over, but I see people already did. the view at 20:00 looks and sounds like you're in a skid steer with a forestry mower attachment.
@@Something2LookAt I sure hope so. I bought them after watching your videos on them. I’ll post my videos of them in these southern Louisiana Jungles haha
The advantage of a blade like this, is that it will cut the blades of grass lying horizontally, making for a smoother cut. It may work on regular lawns if the wings we're only a half inch or so, could experiment with different length wings.
Should make larger versions for actual rotary cutters like Brush Hogs for tractors. Would leave a better and finer cut. I've been considering getting rid of my bush hog so I can replace it with a Flail Mower.
I’d love to try one of these blades on my DR field & Brush mower and see what it does? Being even my field & brush mower will still push some tall grass/weeds over to the ground instead of cutting it. Especially if it’s wet at all. Personally I think those wings on the end of the blade with them being sharp too is ingenious! Giving the blade the ability to cut from two directions as I see it. Sure be interesting trying the blade on my DR!
Great video, it answered a hundred questions. Namely which way the blade goes. Questions, why are folks calling them Kavli blades, while the website says Fuyo and Fuyoal? And is sharpening frequency the same as ordinary blades? I figure they are, just wondering. Also it's so cool that it says grass side. I saw one replacement blade that said UP. But which up?? The up toward my chin when the deck is upside down for installation, or up to the sky AFTER install, when in use??
They are called Kavli blades simply because it's John Kavli's company. Yes, same frequency of sharpening. But quite a bit trickier to sharpen. Ha, just remember "teeth down" for installation.
I can't imagen going into cut something like that and not knowing if there is a rock or something else you mite run over. Kept waiting to hear you hit something. LUCKY
hoping myself to grab some Kavli blades for my husqvarna z560x soon. though have to say wont be using them outside grass mowing ( you neer know what people might have thrown on such properties - from fishing nets to metal things and/or even broken wirefence) as i got the green climber lv600 (remote controlled with flail mowing - upto 7cm wide brush - and forestry heads )
@@coffeebuzzz - Going to get with Oregon tomorrow, right after I throw on my coffee buzz, about picking up some of these blades that you speak of. Thanks for the tip!
From a lot of experience I say no. In stuff this tall and thick it would clog the deck using standard blades. Gators would do better than standard but would strain the engine more and clump up exiting the chute. I didn't see the deck clog once with these blades.
Great video, Mike. One of those 'why didn't I think of that' inventions. I've got a couple acres to mow that, in the heat of the season, I sometimes can't get to often enough to follow the one-third rule and watch as alot of blades are just flattened, not to be cut. I would buy these. But as I run an Exmark rear-discharge, with one blade running in reverse, I'd need one reverse cut. (ahem, Mr. Kavli, if you're listening...).
I have an NOS mulch blade kit for the 500 series MTD rear engine riding mower. (I don’t have a mower that it fits). It has a center plate and 8 individual blades that bolt to it. But it’s a 30” cut. I wish I could have 8 cutting blades per spindle on the 52” deck on my Toro 522xi assuming I could cut tall grass faster. I’m aware of the Meg-mow system but I’ve read they don’t cut well.
Oh yea, meg-mow. You know I tried to contact those people and got no reply. But the Kavli blades for sure work great! Sounds real interesting the NOS mulch blade you're describing for the MTD mower.
Any feelings about how the finisher blade would work as a mulching blade with a full mulch kit. Meaning, baffles end block off plate. And, how about under wet conditions?
I'd have to really do some comparing to give my opinion. ? The best blades I have ran on my 61" TURF TIGER have been the Bob Cat Blades - Gator ! These in this video don't appear to be mulching so well but it's also dry. What I have found is if the blades are flat even if they are Gator blades they don't pick up leaves and mulch as well but if they have an ark or bend in them they mulch much better. I'd like to hear what others have found to be the best blades please. !
But...they are mulching. I tried to show the aftermath with as much detail as I could film. If you heard my commentary, these blades are performing better than anything I've ever used. I'm 30 years mowing grass commercially and used many sets of Gator blades. These are better!
@@Something2LookAt I see well I will check them out closer. Thanks for the link. They are interesting. ! So with that blade turned down do they dig and do you have to raise the deck !
@@lbbradley55 Surprisingly no. And you would think that they would be leaving a kind of Spirograph pattern but they don't. Now, these are the Beast blades made for bush hogging really, but there is another type which they named Finisha which is more for every day use. I have them on all my machines.
You can see a clear benefit of the downward winglets, they do best at pre-cutting layed brush at odd angles of attack they also improve the finishing cut by further reducing any remaining thick Shawn stubble after the first & second passes to a finer consistency!. Oh an forgot to mention the blade design promotes reliable ALL WEATHER PERFORMANCE- The blades don't see a difference between the wet or dry seasons so to speak!
HI Alex I saw that someone replied to you. Yes we do ship to the UK, we also have a registered design there with a patent also pending. Thanks for the interest.
S2LA, ....I am thinking that the bent blade tips are meant to cut the tall growth that is laid over. It looks like it is working quite nicely. ....The different angle of the sharpened length of the blade.has me wondering if it was another experiment to see how the blades wear.
A number of years ago I bought a Snapper mower with a "Ninja" blade on it. I was so impressed with how well that blade cut grass it wasn't funny. I had a neighbor lady who'd let her grass get up too high while she was trying to get her worthless drug addicted grandson to come over and cut her grass. Finally, I went over with my new mower and made sure short work of her grass, didn't even have to rake afterward. It cut up everything to nothing. Seeing this blade design handle the high grass like that Ninja did is no surprise to me it cut that tall stuff like it did.
Those are CRAZY looking! But, if your cutting 8"-20" Tall Moist Brush, that'll do it for ya! A smaller (shallower) Winglet (3/8") "MAY WORK" for a Push Mower, just as long as there is enough "LIFT" for Mulching...🤔 I'd love to get my hands on a 21" Mulching Blade (for my Snapper) that has a STRAIGHT cutting edge, that also won't kill my Bank Account!!! Any recommendations? Thanks for sharing this new Blade Technology! 😎 Take care, 🤓 -Thomas Western Washington State
Look up Gator blades made by Oregon. They are straight and have teeth on the top. And they mulch great. They are what I normally run on my commercial machines. Sizing one for your Snapper would be that question. You'll have to measure your blade tip to tip and then try to find that size. Actually I'm seeing that they want to measure them diagonally so be careful. They are on Amazon.
I owned a 60” scag cheetah RD loved it but wasn’t a fan of the rear discharge at all.. too many windrows shouldn’t even be called a velocity+ IMO but now I have a scag cheetah 52” side discharge and MAN do I love it.. scag cheetah all the way! I’m selling a triple bagger setup if anyone is interest HMU I live in WNY
The no spacer setup may be needed where you must rely on the mowers shielding to catch /direct cuttings. I wonder how they work on a mulching mower. It seems a very good blade where you many have more than ordinary grass. Hmm are the blades addicting? " I''ll just mow a little more... " Then you are out gas on the backside a 300 Acre field :) God Bless you.
@@Something2LookAt Hi mike and Jeffrey if you could remember on our site Mike that odd husqvarna mower is a mulching mower and it did really well. Don't forget that the grass needs to be expelled asap. These blades are also a finishing blade and can cut shorter grass and leave a fine mulch.
@@johnkavli8181 Oh yes, I remember now John. And yes, I discovered in this video that they are actually finishing blades. I do plan on doing another video with these blades by the way. I'm waiting for Summer to get going. It's been pretty dry and things aren't growing as insane as they usually do here in Florida.
You could put shorter spacers , say maybe 3/8 spacer. If you noticed how long the blade was sharpened, it was a long way. But you have a very powerful mower which helps from bogging. Your deck is how wide? It looks to me to be 52 inch
Something 2LookAt well I’m absolutely positive your motor is in tip top shape, it never came close to stalling. Even still the blade as you said is bowed, that’s like mowing different heights at the same time. I’m still trying to wrap my brain around the bow. I’ll bet if you didn’t move and turned the blade on for 10 seconds your grass would be different levels.
Well, I don't know how you would tell the rpm. Mowers usually spin at about 3500rpm. Maybe you mean just low, medium, high throttle? Definitely high throttle.
I mean I doubt you’d be able to cut anything bigger around than 3/4” but hey it’ll put the hurt on thick and tall grass. Not the blades them selves I’ve hit small stumps and my mower hated me for it and I got off them pretty quick but I doubt you’d be able to push much stuff over to even cut it. I’d say these would be good for the year after getting land cleared to keep the new growth down and deal with roots and stuff that stick up as grass grows in more than actual clearing
