I played the Yamaha GB1k a couple of times - its surprisingly balanced and expressive. Didn't have the chance to play the Kawai. In fact I have yet to play a Kawai which I liked - but perhaps I was unlucky. With Yamahas - it's a mixed bag - some are great (and some great artists are using them - e.g. Jacob Collier, the Late Chick Corea, I also saw Kenny Werner playing them), some are meh .. But GB1k was actually quite nice.

The Kawai is far superior in sound in every way. Kawai's builds pianos. Yamaha make some great motorcycles and dabble in good piano's too. But if I'm buying, by sound and quality. It's Kawai every time.

I agree the Kawai sound better, but to say Yamaha simply "dabbles in pianos" is simply not true. The CFX is widely considered one of best grand pianos and is used worldiwde in all sorts of music.

@@thedigitalemotion They don't dabble. They make some of the finest pianos out there. Kawai makes fine pianos as well and are underrated.

Yamaha brighhhhhhttttttness, no way. The GL10 is balanced and sounds incredibly amazing for a baby grand.

In my local town there is a university of protestant church music. They only use Kawai baby grands and Steinway for the big ones. Not even one Yamaha in the whole university.

Come on you can’t even compare Yamaha and kawai. Kawai is SO much better. From their upright, to the baby grands, to the Shigeru kawai concert grands. Kawai is the superior company.

I prefer Kawai pianos in general. But Yamahas are a little more consistent, IMHO. Yamaha is absolutely a better company - more innovative and makes more money. But Kawai holds a place in the market because their pianos are a little more unique and special. I have owned both and I miss my Kawai more than I will ever miss my Yamaha. Actually my Kawai(s), I owned two before I got my Steinway.

Yes, I hear he has also the microphone on a different place and distance by both pianos. By Yamaha it is much more close. That is why Yamaha sounds sooo briiiiighhhht like somebody writes. And he also plays much more harder on Yamaha and also different art of improvisation. Both pianos are nice, Yamaha is for me more intense and personal. I have Yamaha S5X. Another category of instrument and is sounds beautiful.

S5X is on a way higher tier. The GB1K is entry level where SX is the tier right below the highest CF. Yamahas should be played with a soft to moderate touch and only with a hard touch for timbre variety where you really sometimes need to really play almost triple forte to maximize it.

I own a Yamaha personally, and I have played other yamaha and kawai baby grand a few years back. But to be fair, I think Bluthner is the better one, end of discussion

The sound in tthe yamaha is noticeably more clear than the gl10, the gl10 sounds a bit more blurry and rich plus the gl10 is about 3k more expensive than the gb1k in msrp pricess

I tried both GB1 & GL10 errrr... sound really like a blocked nose. Go to at least made in Japan & 170cm in length minimum (C3X or GL30).

I had to google this one. Not really a competition. Too niche. Have you even played a Kawai Grand before? Many people in Germany buy German (sounding) piano brands but in reality the mechanics are imported and overall they are not that great. Kawai has it's own research on material and sound.
