Kawai's Flagship Console Piano - The CA99

Kawai's highest-end console piano was launched at the beginning of 2020, featuring the latest and greatest edition of the Grand Feel Action, the GF3, and an interesting method of sound production where some of the audio is piped through a wooden soundboard to produce a more authentic sound. I liked the instrument and its playing experience, and don't typically review instruments like this, so here is a mini-review!

Another great review James. Your videos are always so informative, touching all the relevant aspects of what goes into choosing a piano/digital piano. This is a bit outside of your usual choice of digital pianos/keyboards to review but I would like to see you review the Yamaha MX88 and even comparing it to the likes of the kawai es520 etc.

I have had my CA99 for about a year and I love it. The piano sound never gets old. I have had and still have other stage pianos, but the pianos, and the feel of the CA99 beats them all. Also, I use the built-in wireless midi to link to Mainstage on my laptop, and I use the wired midi to link to the Ketron SD90 module for unlimited sounds and layers. The organs are not bad on the CA99, but I use my 1963 A100 and Leslie for organ. Of course, it is for the studio, but the stage piano and xk3c are good for travel.

On why I choose console digital and why I'm considering upgrading to CA79 or CA99 from my CA34 even if there are good acoustic pianos in my country at that price range: I want the look and feel of an acoustic piano, and the freedom to be able to practice whenever I want at the same time. The acoustic makes life very difficult for other people in the house and for the neighbours as well. Not just about the volume, t but considering the many hours of sloppy sounding repetition of parts of a piece, I really don't think neighbours must be subjected to that torture. :) Also, as I am single, I can practice whenever I want, so sometimes I practice late in the night. With the top notch digitals like these, you get the freedom without much compromise on the sound and action. Just love it! Brilliant job!

I seem to remember that you played a CVP-809 at NAMM last year; I remain a big CVP-809 fan since, as you noted, hybrid pianos can't hide their underlying digital samples; their underlying digital reproduction techniques; and their electronic amplifiers! While making my decision to buy a CVP-809, or not, I tried out some Kawai's; I can only say that I love the Yamaha sound a lot more. Before I added this comment, I listened to some other CA99 reviews and, like the CVP-809, CA99's seem to come with killer organ sounds, etc... just like the CVP-809. please note: I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll run into a CVP-809 that you can deeply review.... With all that said: the CA99 definitely looks like it raises the bar given what it sounds like and what it's being priced at... It will be interesting to see how Yamaha responds!

I do own a CA-99 and did ask for a review. When I saw this I got the movie blockbuster feel before watching. I can't agree more with your review - a great digital with superb action, sounds really good, but by no means can beat the sound signature of a good old well-made non-digital (but the soundboard makes it the closest to that I've heard). That's why I am looking at and will testplay the Kawai GX-2 ATX at the end of the summer, it's a big baby grand, all traditional, except when you press and lock the middle pedal. Then it goes digital with the same tech as the CA-99. So sort of the next level in the technology stack if you will. Now I am not asking you to review it as it is simply too costly for most mortals, but I do think the new tech Kawai (and other manufacturers) are coming up with is a great addition to the piano market. Edit: I believe you can set when the transducers kick in, haven't done it myself but the piano guy who brought it in mentioned it.

Sounds pretty killer, to me. Kawai get a lot of things right, when they set out to make a nice, digital piano. When it's time to upgrade, from my slab...the 99 is there, making the choice more (or maybe less?) difficult. Our climate (southeast), and our residence...could make an unsuitable environment, for a higher-end, acoustic. Something like this (hybrid style), gives us so much tone; and asks relatively little, in return. Again, it's a downright, killer option...for a nice fixed piano, in our place. Thank you so much, for this review!

There is a couple issues I have with these pianos: 1. it is almost as expensive as decent upright piano 2. The repair costs are ridiculous post warranty , as technicians even charge hourly rate for travel time . ( technicians can be 2+ hours away ) 3. If sounds get outdated you are stuck with this big thing and can be difficult to trade since it is so difficult to take or to potential buyers 4. Lots of time it can sound boxy depending on placement and your house acoustics With that said I can understand the appeal if you are for certain you cannot have an acoustic due to living situations

I agree. With console digital pianos the synthesiser reproduces a close approximation of the sound of a flagship piano. The wooden casework holds the lids and speakers. However, the casework colours the sound. It needs to be as good as an acoustic pianos casework and soundboard. Getting the colouring right is a very difficult job and is likely to be sensitive to the wood used. I would expect to see a factory set acoustic equaliser to neutralise the most detrimental effects of the wooden casework. Surely you get a better sound for less cost from a stage piano (MP11SE in my case) and high quality amplifier and speakers (e.g. near field monitors or keyboard amplifier and speakers). So the key advantage of console piano is to make the piano look like a nice piece of furniture for a living room.

Not an easy task. Kawai's GF actions are top notch in terms of realism, dynamics, texture, feeling. They are indeed more complex and sophisticated, therefore more expensive. In addition to that, the units featuring the GF action are heavier and much less portable than its competitors (MP11SE is a good example). By installing the GF into the ES, the unit would be significantly heavier, bigger and much more expensive. The ES920 features the RHIII action, which is simply amazing and outstanding. Nord installed a modified version of the RHIII into their Grand model but Kawai had to make multiple adjustments in order to build the light and compact keybed that Nord urged them to do. The outcome, as far as I'm concerned, was awful and terrible. The Nord Grand action is a joke.

I can use the sounds directly from the instrument or any of the sounds in garageband. It's pretty awesome.
@napilopez
@napilopez 3 года назад
Hi Dax, while I'm just a beginner at the piano I do have expertise in loudspeaker acoustics and I definitely think studio monitors are a great idea, because most piano speakers, well, aren't very good. They tend to be optimized more for fitting the form factor than for actually reproducing sound correctly. However, it's important you get studio monitors with a flat frequency response and good 'dispersion' or 'directivity' for the most accurate sound. Unfortunately the presonus Eris don't have a flat frequency response, with an undue emphasis in the bass and treble in particular, as well as a dip in the upper mids. If you have access to EQ they can be fixed though (Look up Eris 5xt audio science review). In that price range, the Kali LP-6 is a much better option that will give you a more linear response and deeper bass extension as well. The JBL 305P as well. Their main issues is that they might have a little hiss. I'm also a big fan of the iLoud Micro monitors, which have a rather linear response and are super small with good bass. They just can't get very loud. Good luck!
@thepocketboy
@thepocketboy 3 года назад
@@napilopez thanks for the info...but I did already purchase them. I understand the importance of flatness and if I had equipment I'm sure I could measure and tweak.. But as I am a novice of the ear.. They sound fine to me for now. I def don't need loud just fuller sound and less rolloff for the low end. So far I very much like them. I smile more when I play so that's good enough for me (as of now)
@napilopez
@napilopez 3 года назад
@@thepocketboy hi Dax! Don't get me wrong, you should definitely enjoy the speakers -- they're still quite good, just thought I'd suggest some tweaks should you want a free 'upgrade' for the Eris's or if you still have the option to return them. Happy playing! Getting decent speakers for my digital piano is definitely one one of the best choices I made and studio monitors are the way to go!

The thing that puzzles me about digital pianos is this: it doesn't sound like a real piano because why really? If you hear a recording of an acoustic piano on youtube or on a CD, it sounds like an acoustic piano. So why shouldn't a recording of an acoustic piano also sound like an acoustic piano in a digital instrument? Maybe the digital piano makers try to hard to "clean up" the samples, thereby removing essential information, or they cripple the sounds on purpose because they fear they won't sell any acoustics anymore? One of the mysteries of life :)
@gegervary
@gegervary 3 года назад
In my opinion it's not simply a matter of sound. In a recording the dynamics are already established by the pianist, whereas on a digital piano the sound is constantly being modulated by how much speed and strength you put into each note, so it's a lot more complex to mimic? Also in my opinion, this piano actually sounds amazing.
