On paper, the Ninja 400 may seem like a slow bike to some unknowing riders, but roads like this really show the advantages and fun to be had on a smaller CC bike. There's so much more to motorcycles than top speed, engine capacity, and horsepower.

Been riding most of my life and to be honest, I have more fun taking a twisty road leisurely at 60mph than blasting down the interstate at over 100. On a ninja 650 now I honestly think it has enough power, comfort and handling that I don't feel wanting for more.

I agree, back roads are always more fun and relaxing. I've ridden a 650 before and the riding position is almost the perfect mix of sport and comfort. Those are great all around bikes!

Agree. Started on 50cc. then 125cc Cagiva Mito Evo, now a 400cc (373) Husqy. On mountain roads i had days where i ate R6's and 1000cc fireblades for breakfast. When arriving at the top always have a good chat with the folks i ran it up with. They'd never believe when i tell them that im on a sub 400cc single cylinder and pulling away from them. I often get "No way! Man i dont wanna find out what you could do with a proper litre bike or something", and in all honesty? i dont blame thm, im kinda scared to find out myself..

i've ridden lots of motorcycles in the last 20 years and i've came to the conclusion that power is not a top 3 on my reason to like a motorcycle. i rode a 2023 ninja 400 for about 4 hours on a 80 mile ride, last 10 miles were in torrential downpour. the 400 is very nimble and easy to throw around, im 6ft 230lbs and the slim tank is very huggable. lane splitting was very easy compared to a supersport. for my weight it pulls surprisingly well 10-75mph. from 88-100, it took forever lol. braking was pretty good too, need better tires for aggressive riding with braking and cornering. but stock tires were great in the torrential downpour, i never lost faith in the tires at that point

Haha if only more people would come to the same conclusion. I'm actually surprised you find the bike comfortable given your height, how do your knees feel after longer rides? Finding good tires for a small bike is always hard, but have you tried the Dunlop Q3+s? The 400 in this video is actually running a set, although I'm not the biggest fan of the Q3 in the wet.

@@averagemoto I'm 6' and 205 with a 34" inseam. And bad knees. They never bother me when I get off my N400 after 4 or 5 hours so it's a surprisingly comfortable ride. I was a bit concerned when I bought it that I was going to be cramped but I'm not. Roads around me are mostly straight so next season I'm going Michelin Road 6's.

Thanks for the comment, I was thinking about something like this and your insights are very helpful to me. I dont have any experience except for the heavy 650 I learned on and I thought it wasn't that good to handle. Sure acceleration was nice but it didn't flick around corners as easily as I would have thought so I was wondering if I should just get a ninja 400. From your experience it sounds pretty much like what I'm hoping for from a bike

@@averagemotoThe rider is what separates a regular 400 and a proper 400. Many guys can’t keep it pinned through corners, takes some heavy skill. You guys are great, keep it up n stay safe 💪🏼🔥

@@RT22-pb2pp No one is saying you are nuts, I'm just trying to figure out the intention of your comment. Is it to make other riders less experienced feel like they arent "damn good"? If so why not paste this comment in a racing forum? Almost everyone we ride with understands the capabilities of their bikes and their own personal limitations, but the biggest thing we all understand is that the road isn't a track, and ones skills on track have to be tailored when re adjusting to riding on the street. Most of the riders riding along in these videos have various racing backgrounds, from local MX to Baja, Motoamerica, Ulster GP , TT, NAHA, GNCC and beyond, but the thing we all enjoy is just flowing on a nice road and exploring. As you said, it all comes down to the rider, on track a pro on a 600 will easily pull away from a intermediate on a 1000, but isn't that expected? It's not always about winning and knowing who is faster, we've all seen riders with that mindset not last very long, it's just about enjoyment at your own pace on rides like these.

Canyon riding with a group of friends creates great memories. My friend used to always lead in the curves with his Suzuki GS450. Wish we had Go Pros back in the day. Great video. Wouldn’t mind having that Ninja 400 foo!

I have been riding almost my entire life. Big bikes and small bikes. In 1984 i bought the very first Ninja. The 900 Ninja. I really loved that bike. But in recent years riding on small streets i have been riding a Ninja 250 and a small little scooter. But then i started feeling like i wanted a big bike again. So i spent a couple of years test riding many different bikes. From a Honda 500 and 650. Kawasaki 400 and 650. And z900. Yamaha Xsr 900. Mt07 and mt09. And R6. Triumph speed twin 1200. Speed triple RS. And other bikes. But then i ended up buying a bike that wasnt even on my radar. I just came across a 2nd hand Ducati 939 Supersport with 2159 km on it. The bike looked like new and i bought it without even test riding it first. And i am happy with my decision. I love the bike. But it is powerful and heavy. And is at its best on really big sweeping turns. But not on smaller canyons or in the city. And i started thinking about how much i loved my test ride on the little 400 Ninja. so i kept my eyes open for one. And i came across a great deal on a 2nd hand one with 288km on it fora great orice And i could not resist getting it. The bike is a joy to ride. Its so easy to make the bike go where you want it to go. With power that you use all the time instead of power you use ocasionally. I love both my bikes for different reasons. They are both great bikes. But i also love the Triump 765 Speed Tripple. It handles like a small and light bike in the city. But can also really fly when you want it to. But i wish it had a fairing. Anyway the Ninja 400 is a great bike. And its not just for beginners. I think on most small to mid size canyon twisties you will beat the bigger bikes on it. But dont expect it to rip your arms off with its low end power.

Unfortunately as you know there is just no one bike that does it all, so I think you have the right idea of getting that bike that makes you happy😀. Glad you were able to find a 400 with such low miles, now that motorcycles have gotten even more popular over the years they are getting hard to find. Deep down, I still miss my old FZ-09 and the sound of its tripple Quick shifting through the gears. Have fun and stay safe out there🛵🏍🚀

nice riding man , i ride big bikes for a long time and recently bought a husqvarna 701 as second bike , smaller bikes are more fun 100% ! i was looking at these bikes as tracktool to have fun on , nice to see you trowing it around as its ment for 🤘🤘

I own several bikes, some quite powerful and my newest one is the 2023 Ninja 400. My 1999 Honada VFR 800 Interceptor is quite fast as well very quick, it's tuned with a full exhaust. I also have a 2022 Ninja 636, also fast and quick, no tune, only slip on exhaust change, it's fun but you get sore after a while. Last year we purchased a 23 Ninja 400 to upgrade my son from a CBR 250R. He loved the 400, but after a while, he wanted more power, what young man doesn't?! He is tall enough to flatfoot the VFR, so I started riding the 400 he started putting miles on the VFR. I tell ya, it's been a long time since I had this much fun on something quick and nimble that is also comfortable. Yes, of course I tuned it, a $285 ECU flash gave the 400 quite a bit more juice, but it really didn't need it, believe me, this is not the 400cc bike from the 90's, in stock form, this is quite the pocket rocket. You really don't need a 175Mph machine, you will ride 99% of the time at speeds this 400 can achieve with ease.

Man, just when I thought I was set on getting the cfmoto 450ss, I start getting recommended videos like these making me torn between that and the ninja 400. Videos online say I can't go wrong with both, but man the ninja400 gets so much praise about its lightweight / maneuverability. Its a shame we don't have good twisties in NYC/Long Island

😂 hey It all comes down to personal preference. I have zero experience with Cfmoto, but hear good things. Also I prefer a bike that has more proven reliability and aftermarket support, but go with the bike that makes you happy regardless of what others may say because that is all that really matters. If it helps, you could always make a pros and cons list of each bike and compare the two to help you decide. Maybe take a road trip upstate someday to test your new bike out. Let me know what you decide on, just curious. 😎🛵🏍🚀

I can't speak much about the 400 as I skipped it when I was riding. However I've owned both a Ninja 250r and a Ninja 650, if you're looking for reliability and aftermarket support for the long run, you really cannot go wrong with the Kawasaki Ninja.

I have the 450ss. The ninja 400 is lighter and feels more flickable but it just has a lil bit less power to it. Then knowing the 400 is Japanese you ain't gone be questioning reliability which is still running through my head after 700 miles on my 450ss.

The top speed is not that short. What's lacking is the mid-to-late acceleration. From 60mph, acceleration is noticeably slower, and from 90mph, it feels like it's barely accelerating. The biggest advantage of this bike would be its cheerful movement, which comes from light weight when passing through short corners or consecutive corners. Also, the quarter-class, which is light and has a short wheel base, has a higher cornering speed than a liter-class bike.

I had my 2018 Ninja 400 KRT in the UK, on Sunday breakfast runs on tiny, curvy, damp roads at 40-70 mph most of the time the Ninja can't be beat. Also UK there are speed cameras everywhere & easy to lose points based licence, a bigger bike is mostly pointless unless touring (ADV's are popular )Also I used it for bit commuting so light and easy between traffic in crowded London (where can lane split) and also did a 2000 mile tour up and around Scotland... Most comfortable experience. Best bike I ever sold... On a R7 in North Carolina now. I was a returning rider when I picked up my N400, it was great value to keep and get back into it....but would also highly recommend the N400/Z400 for anyone starting out/anyone who wants to improve how to carry speed well in corners. Whenever people ask me which bike I would prefer to be on, I always ask them where I would be riding it first...

@@101BadBreath With such restrictive riding conditions and roadway speeds in the UK I can see where the 400 would be plenty for comutting and what not. As you said the Z400 would in my opinion make for an even better beginner bike with its upright riding position. R7 is also a fun bike, hope you are able to find some nice roads and have some fun in NC without having to worry about those speed cameras haha.

Most riders are not mature enough to understand this. It is fun to make a "slow" bike fast. I once bought the Suzuki TU-250. When I was picking it up new at the dealership, the salesman asked me if I was a new rider. I laughed and said my main ride was a Bandit 1250, but I also had a Valkyrie and a VTR1000 and an RC51 race bike. To that he replied "Why do you want THAT bike?" I just laughed. That thing was a hoot! I banged it off the redline with every shift. I also remember once stopping at a popular riding hangout and was talking to a rider of an R6. I was riding my F4 (so you can tell this was in '99). I asked him how he liked his R6. He said, "it's okay, but I have already outgrown it". I could see his homies were all on CBR1000's and R1's. I didn't say anything to him, but his words were saying one thing, and his bike was telling a different story, because as he was talking, I was checking out his tires. The tires had 1" wide "wanker strips" of unused, virgin rubber! Outgrew indeed! The overarching VAST majority of riders do not possess the skills needed to even use 25% of the capability of the modern open class sportbike. If they do and use that on the street, it is a recipe for disaster. If they take it to the track, most will be humbled. I was at a track day once at VIR and got passed like I was standing still by Rich Oliver (AMA 250cc Champion) who was doing the track day to get some riding and setup time in.

Haha like anything in life there will always be someone better or in this sport's case, "faster", but a quick glimpse at the front and rear tires can potentially reveal a lot about a riders comfort level in most cases. As you mentioned smaller bikes can be ridden harder and feel more fun depending on the riders desire. From street to track its all just personal preference so I'm glad you bought the bike you wanted, stay safe out there!🛵🏍🚀

I have a ninja 400 and love riding on back roads and absolutely love tearing those bad boys up. I am about to sell it though, and get a zx6r, but I feel like that will be extremely balanced in weight and horsepower compared to the power and weight of most 1000ccs and I'm hoping it will be the perfect bike for me.

If you've mastered the 400 on back roads, then I'm sure you are ready for the 600😎! Also not sure if you are aware, but you could try renting one before buying. There are a few popular rental apps like Riders Share, and Twisted Road if you wanted to be sure before committing.

i’ve had my ninja 400 for about 5 months now, i am constantly approached by the bigger bike guys after we hit the twisties. They can never understand why the “slow” bike is always riding there tails, but i’ve definitely out grown the 400 and i wanna get a zx6 to really hone in my riding skills

Sounds like you've mastered the smaller bike so a 600 would be a great upgrade! Would you ever considered getting a naked bike like a MT-09 or KTM 790/890? Those are alot of fun on the backroads and comfortable for commuting.

Great video man. I've had a ninja 400 for a good while now and agree that smaller bikes have their innate strengths on backroads like this. Not that they're necessarily "better", but bigger bikes have a completely different experience than smaller ones and both are fun. It's all preference, and as you said there's so much more to bikes and cars than spec sheets. I'm probably gonna get a zx-4rr next. I just love smaller bikes, and eventually I'll probably have a sport tourer for the best of both worlds, its a blessing that motorcycles are so much cheaper than cars.

I agree with what you said about the pricing of bikes compared to cars especially for performance value. As a warning, once you go to a sporty sport touring bike you may never look at a sportbike the same lol. 🛵🏍🚀

Do you know if there is anything a little bigger than the 400 because I learned on my friends 400 I like the size but wish it was a little bigger and I really want to buy my own.

Are you looking for a bike that is physically larger, or are you referring to its engine size when you say bigger? The Ninja 400 is hard to beat size and power wise, a newer option could be to upgrade to a Ninja ZX4R or Ninja 500, but honestly I don't think they are worth the additional cost for such a small power gain. If you are looking for a physically larger bike then their are a few options I can list if you are interested. Let me know 🤓

I agree with everything said. However, I just purchased my fist liter bike 2 months ago and I must say the feeling I get riding that bike is incomparable to any bike I have rode in my 10 years of riding.

@@averagemoto I have a 2015 s1000rr so far I love it. Is it overkill hahah hell yeah it is, but that bike makes me enjoy my commute every day here in CA. I knew owning a liter bike would always be in the back of my mind if I never made the jump. I'm 29 so I thought this is the time to go for it haha

Great video quality. I remember when I first started riding, all of the "old guys" saying "you don't need this", "you don't need that", you'd be better off with this" and the one that it took a long time to really understand "spec sheets don't tell you a darned thing about how fast a bike is on the actual roads that you ride it on". Well, it turns out that those "old guys" knew a thing or two more than me. It's interesting watching this video with a young rider that I know in mind. He started riding on a Yamaha R3. He traded "up" to a Triumph 675 Daytona which he has now determined to be far too powerful for the roads that we have around our parts, citing that he has to nurse it too much and can't thrash it like he wants to. He wants something that's a bit faster than his old R3. On his wish list is the new Kawasaki ZX-4R, which he reckons should lie about halfway between the two bikes that he's had.

Thank you, and thanks for stopping by! Over the years I found that it all comes down to personal preference and riding styles/abilities. The 675 is a really nimble and capable bike, but maybe the step back down in power may be what helps the rider you mentioned gain more confidence, and there's nothing wrong with that. I keep hearing the ZX4R being mentioned more frequently so maybe that will be a bike newer riders gravitate towards as a bike in the middle. Either way I hope they are able to find the bike that makes them happy.😎🛵🏍🚀

I been riding a 400 for 3 years now and i'll say its a blast and PLENTY of power for city streets, back roads, twistys...everything but straight line hwy trying to keep up with litre bikes! Lol but i dont worry bout that anyways! I let them fly mach jesus and i fly mach peter or paul!

Hey man awesome video you can really ride, thinking of getting a 400 as my first bike in the next month or two since it is warming up. I was also wondering is that digital gauge factory? I cant seem to find ninjas with that wherever I look, def would love to have that. Great vid again.

Hey, thanks for riding along! The Ninja 400 is a great first bike. To clarify, the onboard footage was recorded on a Yamaha R1 and the Ninja 400 is the bike in front being followed by the R1. The digital display is the R1s, not the Ninja 400s.

I have a 2018 candy plasma blue (rare color) ninja 400 and I agree, they are fantastic bikes. Did a full exhaust, velocity stacks, high performance air filter and ECU tune and that REALLY wakes the bike up. Very smooth riding. Haven't tried the Ninja 400, more interested in the upright Z400. I gotta say, I started on a ninja 300, which I didn't like, very gutless, hard to get away from traffic when I filter to the front of the lights, poor suspension, no torque at all to pass cars on moutain roads, and I just don't like the sport ergo, feels awkward on very tight turns. Now on a DRZ400S, I really enjoy it, completely different riding style, way lighter than the ninja 300, great bottom end torque, has decent stock suspension (gonna do the racetech on it in the future), really enjoy it in the twisties, but the vibration and lack of 6 speed starts does suck when the speed picks up. If they can put a ninja 400 engine into a DRZsm, I think that would be a very interesting ride. I need to test ride that ktm 390 adv also...

Thank you! The DRZ is a bulletproof bike and a great all arounder. I bet it is a lot more comfortable than the the Ninja 400 with the seating position and wide bars. The gutlessness of the Ninja 250 and 300 is the exact reason I try to convince newer riders to go the 400 route instead! I think you might be onto something with the Ninja 400 in a DRZ chassis😀. I know people have swapped CBR 300r engines into CRF 230L chassis so maybe it will catch on.

Yeah that's about right I used to own a ninja 400 the twisties are where it shines. Few were the times that I had to be careful of how much throttle I was utilising.

I know you guys love going fast but you gotta understand we have speed limits and usually a 200/300cc can already go way past those speed limits. A 400cc is definetely not slow. Maybe in moto GP race it is slow, definetely not for the road tho.

Going "fast" isn't the goal when riding, I prefer tight roads that require a lot of short shifting and tossing the bike around. The whole point of the video is to show that the Ninja 400 is not slow despite what people keep saying. Regardless of how "fast" a bike is, you can only go as fast as a road allows, so the goal is just having fun, which is what this pace is to us. Ultimately you will have two different riding experiences but still arrive at the same destination.

I still have my 2015 Ninja 300 abs, put 41K miles on it. With K&N high performance filter, Two Brothers Carbon exhaust, Actual sport tires and always fresh oil in it - I can follow 600cc bikes on mountain twisty roads - no problem. Can imagine what 400cc will do with just some mods, that's gonna be next bike - 400. P.S absolutely must to make sure you always have a fresh oil, never overdue the change, 3000K mile intervals is max, I do mostly every about 2500k miles and tire PSI must be correct, check it in the morning before you start ride for correct reading. I'd say roughly 98 percent of riders on the road can't even utilize all the potential of even a 600. 750cc are rare now a days and was the most potent all around bike on the road. GSXR 750 in 98 I believe it was was a 600 frame with a 750 stuffed in. It was a monster

Bought a ninja 400 krt edition last year...super comfortable bike....rev it like hell... totally fun on twisties...you can take the outside or inside lane around litre classess...but it was too comfortable for me that i wanted to upgrade..and i upgraded to z900 this month...still happy and fun .....but yes 400 is no small bike...it is fun and fast

Uh yeah it is lol. I was soooo happy to get away from parallel twins 😅 (in Australia we have to start on bikes under certain power/power-weight) Where I am we don't have roads like that, so I suppose that's a factor for me too, preferring more poweful bikes. Currently daily a 2020 Street Triple RS (765cc) and looking at getting a used 2021+ Ninja 1000SX to replace that and my Kawasaki Meanstreak 1600 (havent ridden that in a few months I think). Looking at the 1000SX for a more comfortable long distance ride and power, as whenever I go see family it's a 7 hour ride on straight highway and always have 30-40+km/h headwinds for at least 2-3 hours. (Hurts the neck at 110 or worse at 130+km/h so need to tuck which isn't all the comfortable outside of twisties 😅

Haha yeah for long highway riding, 600ccs is the minimum I would consider to avoid being on the revlimiter for hours and risk being run off the road by a tailgating Toyota Prius😂. Sport touring is the way to go, which is why I love my 1290 SDGT.

I have a 2023 ninja 400 love it stock tires are scary but anyway, my freinds ride a mt09 and daytona 675 i leave them on the twisties if i want to, its nimble easy and fun, just got some new clip ons and rearsets for it, wating to install them and, are getting some new rosso corsa 4 to put on it im stoked for next season

Recently bought a 2019 ninja 400 no abs and was able to ride with a couple on a bmw 1200gs adventure (with luggage) for a small trip and in a free straight we topped the ninja at 125 the guys on the gs got surprised and now want one!

I couldn't agree more. They are all varying degrees of fast. Yes, "fast" might be defined to an extent by the environment in which one is operating the vehicle, but let's face it, for most of the world's users, 100mph is still a magic number. It's about 5 times faster than what it takes to seriously injure yourself, and in most jurisdictions, it's your license down the drain and a big fine kind of fast, too. Race tracks are a different matter, but that's a discussion for another day.

Unfortunately as you mentioned that is one area smaller displacement bikes tend to suffer. For safety reasons (commuting on highways or needing to pass) I prefer 600ccs and up. The 400s are great bikes, but sometimes you just need a little more power to make passes quickly and safely. Any idea what you want your next bike to be?

Yeah I'd say so, im one that tends to hang back during the higher speed stuff and always maintain a gap for safety. Each ride and road require different limitations. On road I constantly think about "what if scenarios", so I just slow down, or keep the bike more upright in some corners, or chose a different line than most and so on, it's a continuous process as I'm sure you know. My issue with 600s is ergonomics and pricing here in North America. I got my R1 for less than any newer R6, and the experience of a 600 is just so different since they make their power high in the revs requiring you to "push" them in order to come alive. I've ridden a few 600s over the years, and while they would meet all road needs, they just aren't as comfortable for a rider my size.

I will never stop saying this, but 120 mph is not slow. sure its not 600/liter bike speed, but who cares? twisties are way more fun than highway rides for the majority of riders (or at least the riders I know) so you really dont need crazy top end or even crazy acceleration to have fun. plus its a lot more fun if youre not just in one gear the whole time! Im on a 636 now, but there are many days I miss the 400. dont underestimate them!

Ima comp rider and I love my sisters 400 but to me it is slow, I ride my v4 to work and use the 600 to race with and it's just not as fun for me to be passed by altimas and only be able to keep up on twisties especially in my area where there aren't alot of tight corners and twisties the 400 is a little slow, like even when we rideaeound the city we frequently have to sorta slow down and let my sister catch up simply bc she can't go faster than 125 mph

So I’ve been in the woods since I was a kid, but I never had a street bike. I picked up a ninja 400 and to say that I’m in love would be an understatement. However, I feel like a novice rider on the twisties. I’m trying to learn as much as I can about riding position, lean angles, braking etc…. I noticed that the guy on the 400 was flying, yet seemed to be in a neutral position pretty much the whole time. Almost seemed to counter steer on some of the corners, while the guys I’ve seen on the track are leaning hard to the inside. I’m so confused! Anyone know where I can find more info on this?

Hey welcome to the road, the ninja 400 is a great all around bike! So just like in the dirt, everyone has their own riding style. The rider on the 400 likes to maintain a more neutral positioning on the bike because it is more comfortable for them and their smaller body frame makes it easier to do so. Some riders have a more aggressive "track" body position on the road if a corner is tight enough, along with decent speeds to maintain better traction, but it all comes down to what is comfortable for you. The 400 rider does move around on the seat, it's just hard to see because it is so subtle. There's nothing wrong with a more aggressive lean, but the problem we often see is riders that focus so much on trying to lean that they forget that the bike is supposed to lean with them, resulting in a very awkward looking riding position where they are leaned off the bike in a corner that most would not lean into and would likely take in the neutral upright position. Best way to practice is to find a nice road with with no traffic or driveways nearby to slowly go back an fourth on to find the body positions that are comfortable for you. Hope this helps🛵🏍🚀

Yeah no problem. Try to get out and ride as often as you can while focusing on being as smooth as possible in everything you do. Your shifting, braking, cornering and accelerating, once you feel more comfortable try gradually increasing your limitations in these areas until it becomes second nature.

Have you tried Cbr300r or R3 on same road? Wonder how they handle in comparison or newer SV650?

Out of the 3 bikes you mentioned, I would choose the SV650 for this type of riding. Depending on your height combined with your weight that you mentioned in the other comment, the SV650 would be more comfortable given its more upright, but still sporty position and just as capable making for a great all around bike. Are you upgrading from a different bike, or will this be your first?

If kawasaki would send me a couple I would be happy to test and compare them both haha. But I think the Ninja 650 would be a more comfortable compromise since the ZX 600s need to be reved alot higher before they come alive. The torque of the 650 would also be more fun.

I'm not 100%, but I believe so. Thanks for mentioning the v65, I was reading an older article about it the other day. I really wish honda would get back into leading the motorcycle space like they use to (I know they have so many other ventures that motorcycles aren't their priority). Honda's designs and innovations were way ahead of their time and really paved the way. Its amazing how far motorcycles have evolved with technology.

How much do you weigh? I weigh 206 without gear…wonder if the 400 suspension would not work well with my weight?

The rider on the 400 is probably around 130-140 lbs with gear I'd guess. I've seen riders 250 lb + on 300/400s, but you may want to make some adjustments or upgrades to the suspension if you want it to retain it's sharp handling.

I like the ninja 400s but hate the really upright clip ons. can you get replacements that put you in a more sporty position?

You could try by loosening and rotating the stock bars. If that isn't possible then I would just recommend a set of aftermarket clipons, that way you can adjust them to your liking and have a little bit more width and leverage behind the bars.

It's all up to you at the end of the day, you can't really go wrong with a kawasaki, and it all depends on what type of riding you plan on doing .The ZX4R will have significantly more power than the Ninja 400 if that makes any difference in your decision.

i helped a chick move from tampa bay the the florida keys. i had a 1200 sportster she had the 21 ninja 400. i had all her clothes and my clothes on my sportster, she could barely pull 90mph. its not about a tops speed. its about usable speed. she couldnt keep up on the on ramps. couldnt keep up passing trucks. i also put a few 100 miles on that ninja 400. its fast like a hatchback is fast. zippy is the right word

Yes there are a few other manufacturers that make bikes in the 380-400cc category. I believe the Ninja 400 is the most popular, followed closely by the KTM Duke 390 along with the Suzuki DRZ 400. All of these bikes mentioned have a few different variants available like the Ninja 400 and KTM which also have a naked versions, along with the DRZ 400 which has Supermoto and dualsport options. There are alot of other of manufacturers out there, but hopefully this gives you a few options when you start researching!🛵🏍🚀

If I wanted a bike that had a little bigger engine then the ninja what should I get the bike can be bigger but the bike size doesn’t really matter 2 me

Thanks for reposting. Since size is not a concern, and you are looking for something with a bit larger engine but still manageable, I would consider the Ninja 650, Yamaha R7, Suzuki SV650, or CBR 650 R if you want to stick with the sporty look. (I left out a few manufacturers such as Aprilia and Triumph) These are all great bikes to grow into. The majority of the models I listed have a naked variant as well if you want a more upright riding position and a bit more leg room. Honestly the best way to find out what feels the most comfortable is to go to a dealership and sit on all the bikes for a few minutes each to get a feel for which you like the best.

Also as I mentioned in your other comment, the only reason I don't recommend the 500s is due to the price increase for such a negligible power gain. The 650s are a lot better value in the long run unless you are able to find a 400 for a really low price, which is very rare.

Is this a ninja 400 or a ZX4R? A plain twin cylinder 400 has about 44bhp and I couldn't see that keeping up with a much bigger bike like an R1.

This is the parallel twin Ninja 400. As discussed in this video, horsepower and top speed don't really matter on roads like this. A smaller bike has more of a maneuverability advantage which allows it to spend more time on the throttle rather than braking and trying to keep the front wheel down since it's power is also alot less. Think of race cars for example. An F1 car is fast, but if you took an F1 car and had it chase a rally car on a tight short circuit, the F1 car would never truly be able to put its power down, and would fight to find traction the whole time while the rally car would just pull away. Now put the F1 car on an open track with lots of high-speed sections and the rally car would struggle to keep up because it was built for a different type of speed and maneuverability when compared to the F1 car.

That's a good question. It's hard to give an easy answer to that because everyone has different things they are looking for, and budgets. One easy way to do it is to look at the average price of all of the 400s you come across in your area and see if there is one on the lower end of that mileage and price range that you are looking for. Personally I look for bikes with less than 7k miles on them that have been very well taken care of and hardly get ridden. Spend some time figuring out the year of the bike and everything else that you are looking for as this will make narrowing down your daily searches easier. Will this be your first bike, or an upgrade?

I used to have a vfr400 nc 30, i was almost always just as quick as my friends on much larger cc bikes for all the reasons you mention. Got a Superduke now which is effortlessly fast for completely different reasons. Also immensely enjoyable though.

Would cruise at 130mph on my cbr650r on the interstate with ease. I'm actually thinking about getting the zx4rr now just because it's unique. But I'm also gigantic and would like a bigger bike too

@averagemoto yeah, I'm looking at the triumphs, can't afford the insurance on a streetfighter (my favorite bike) currently on a sportster 1250 s, but the fuel range is worse than the ducati v4. Do miss my cbr, just wanted something with more power (torque especially). My thing is I prefer unique things over run if the mill items. And I love performance. Acceleration is also addicting, but so is taking a corner at speed whether on 2 or 4 wheels

Haha I definitely understand the pain of finding a bike that it's comfortable for riders over 6'. Triumph has some nice retro looking options. Would you ever consider anything in the KTM range? Or even the FZ/MT-10? I know insurance rates vary, but my KTM super Duke GT insurance is a lot less than my R1 (obviously), but the performance is just as good on road, and of course way more comfortable.

Now Is the time . We have variable vane turbochargers with inconel turbines . It's time to revisit the turbo bikes of the 80's. Imagine a 400 with literbike performance in a straight line .

Both bikes could go faster, but it increases the unnecessary risk factor. On a bumpy dirty road like this one, this is a enjoyable pace to us that many may find uncomfortable. The reason why I ask is because in the races on the Island of Man the max speed is about 120mph with 200 turns, very twistie, so if on the Island of Man you can't exceed certain speeds due to many turns how much less on public back roads and twisties.

​@@natvega1Ah I see why there may be some confusion. To clear things up, the speed you are referring to is the average speed, which is calculated from all completed laps. The current AVERAGE speed record is 136 MPH, with the TOP speed being above 200 MPH in some sections. This road in this video is nowhere near as open as the TT, which is also 37 miles for 1 lap, of which a rider does 6 of during the senior TT on a road with more open and long sweeping turns.

Guys I have a 2021 zx6r. I’m old. It’s way too powerful for me. Even in low power between 8k and 16k you better strap in. It’s scary. This guy knows what he is talking about. No one needs a liter bike. Most can’t even handle a 600. Smaller bikes are a blast and cops will not harass you. Ride responsible and people won’t run you off the road and will look out for you. Ride like a jerk be prepared
