Camping trip on bikes. Starring Kawasaki Versys 650 off road, doing some gravel roads and 5 creek/ river crossings.
First time off road on a bike. SW-Motech parts(crash bars, barbasters, bash plate) performed quite well.

Hint, when the bike decides to take an unexpected nap, turn the key off. Once you are upright and ready go turn it back on. Fuel pump kick in again and the computer recalculates starting conditions. It should fire right up ... I have the same bike.

It would not have been a proper trip without some spills and thrills. :-) Thanks for posting.

Beautiful country. Nice to see what you do with the bike as I am considering one. Or the KTM Super Duke. I will suggest standing up in the rougher portions will help considerable. And don't be afraid of revving the motor.

Great video mate! The versys is a tough bike. And kudos to you for roughing it :-)

thanks mate. It was a first time for me off-road and bike didn't fail me. It was funny when I stopped at the lights a week ago next to a brand new "KAWA KLR 650", I had asked the guy , -"how is the bike, have you taken it off-road yet?". He replied: "the bike is not good off-road, its too heavy"- and pointing at my Versys, he added - "Your bike should be much better off-road because it looks more like BMW GS " Im also planning on doing a bigger 2 weeks long camping off-road trip in couple of months, hopefully will have some more videos to share.

Finaly some real video, thank you! And what do you think about that bike? Would you recomend it to a beginner in that class over 600cc?

I'm doing the same on my 08 Versys 650. That river is an example of the lack of a 21inch front wheel come in to play, and the weight! I'm going to keep mine for distance rides and get a 300 lightweight.

Thanks for posting the video mate. And for not cutting out the spills, good learning for others. How do you feel the Versys does off road? Good bike? Or better with a V-Strom, KLR?

Hi Please see the spec comparison below model Ground clearance mm Wet weight kg front wheel size inch suspension travel mm front rear Versys 180 209 17 150 145 Vstrom 175 215 19 150 159 KLR650 210 194 21 200 185 DR650 265 166(13l fuel) 21 259 259 KTM 640 Enduro 310 164( with 12 litres) 21 270 300 less weight easier to handle bigger wheel more offroad tyre choise and easier to roll over bumps more suspension travel easier to roll over the bumps and rocks Suzuki DR650 beats most of them and is probably the cheapest option i just got the 2004 KTM 640 Enduro couple of weeks ago and based on the above parameters it beats in every category off road and its still not bad on the road If you are doing lots of off road try KTM 690 maybe if mostly road Vstrom is good too

I like this video. I am torn between a 300 or 650. I want the long hwy travel capabilities of the 650. But wasnt sure if it could offroad. Looks like your 650 had no issue. I want the offroad capabilities of the 300 but with more hwy traveling.
@adventurehungry
@adventurehungry 7 лет назад
300 will be better and easier to handle offload as its lighter. the lighter the better. I'm now trying to stick to lighter bikes like KTM 690. also considering Yamaha WR250R. i now learnt that basically any bike can do ROAD, but not all bikes can do off road. its a lot easier to pickup light bike when you drop it offroad

What tires are you using? What would you recommend for 95/5 on a Versys? Have you softened preload and rebound damping for off pavement riding?
@adventurehungry
@adventurehungry 8 лет назад
+You_Tube_Person the best tyres were pirelli mt 60 corsa they are good for bitumen and off road. but they don't last too long

Hi I had Metzeler Tourance at the back 150/70/17 tyre And Dunlop on the front I don't remember the model of Dunlop something similar to trailmax I sold the bike last month so can't find the exact model name. You can run both Metzeler Tourance front and back. I also liked Pirelli MT60Rs they were very soft and sticky You can put TKC80s they are great for off road too.

I’m riding my 2007 Kawasaki Versys in the Victorian High Country in February 2018. I have a bash plate and engine crash bars fitted. I have Avian Trail Rider Tyres. Hope I can do the creek crossings too 👍. Any tips you can give me from your experience?
@adventurehungry
@adventurehungry 6 лет назад
stand on footpegs , constant throttle and feather clutch 20-30% . Throttle probably should be increased by 20% to compare if there was no water. once you hit the water bike is trying to stall. your tyre pattern looks somewhat similar to what i had. Goodluck !!!

@adventurehungry
@adventurehungry 9 лет назад

DUDE c'mon. Maybe you need to step down on another size bike. Like a 125 enduro to get your off road skills up to par. That's to nice of a bike to mess up. But at least you tried.

jaime Contreras He's riding within his ability. And you obviously know jack shit about bikes, or you would realize that some of the terrain he tackles is WAY beyond what a Versys was ever designed to do. This guy puts this bike through its paces.

>>>And what do you think about that bike? Would you recomend it to a beginner in that class over 600cc? hi, thoughts about the bike: i think its quite good(especially for the money you can't find many alternatives), its capable of doing a lot. its good on road and not bad off road, especially with good tyres. you can see from other youtube members , other people scraping foot pegs on Versys and take it to the tracks. so bike can do it all, its up to the riders ability. im not peg scraper. and this was my first off road trip ever. I got this bike last year sep-oct just 6 months after i got my learners(never been on the bike before). so I was still a beginner(i think I still need to learn a lot on and off road skills) i bought suzuki gs500 first , brand new and sold it in 6 months after i test rode Versys. as i found suzuki uncomfortable on long trips, because of the posture setup( too leaned forward and cramps in the knees) Versys is very upright and very comfortable. I have done 11 day (4-5000kms) trip through the outback in june(videos are still coming) and never found it uncomfortable. some stretches were 1000-2000kms of continuous gravel/dirt road. Versys performed flawlessly.I had Pirelli MT60 tyres on the trip, very grippy, little knobies ,capable of doing REALLY high speeds on gravel with the load. now I'm running Pirelli Scorpion Trails , less knobbly. I think Its ok for learners, just don't rev from day one, get used to it first.Also depends on your size , how tall you are. If you have never been on the bike before maybe find/borrow a 250cc to practice for few weeks before jumping on Versys, as I was intimidated by the seat height at the start, I'm not tall and tip toe on it. my understanding was you need to flat foot on the bike. but after riding for few months i find its fine now. and i always stop with left foot on the ground and right on the rear brake. i have now done 18000kms on Versys in a year and still finding it good for commuting, weekend riding, camping etc. Although i want to try other bikes too :) (KTMs,BMWs, Triumphs, Ducaties etc) install engine crash bars to protect the plastics and the engine. i guess you can even start on a 1000cc bike straight away if you control your throttle , it just takes longer to learn stuff on the bigger bike. good luck and happy to answer any questions

Just watching this again as I’ve been doing more back roads on my Versys. I have to say this is a really ballsy ride for your first time doing this on a bike! I’ve now got SW Motech engine bars and bash plate plus bark busters. Only time I e dropped it was in mud.
@stoneblue1795
@stoneblue1795 6 лет назад
I agree with the swap to a 150 on the rear. It gets you out of that mode where the stock Ninja size tires eventually square off, and you sort of drop off the edge of that eventual flat spot. That all is a non factor on the 150 profile, plus it just fills up the spot under the fender better. Also puts you in a league of being able to shop for a wider range of dual sport tires like the other popular bikes.

+Sawar hi , i dont own KLR and never ridden one, but i have seen them riding side by side next to my KTM and they are quite capable and look alright. i think its a good bike on budget to do a lot of things, but i gonna do a lot of off road you might want to go lighter bike have a look at the advrider.com they got lots of threads on KLR650
