Just got back from a road trip in Malaysia (including recent MotoGP) on a hired Versys 650. Very capable bike and did 90% of what I asked it to do. Just started to run out of top end steam when 2 up and with luggage - pretty good for a 650, though. Currently own a GS1200, and may consider a trade in new year for something a bit more practical and manageable.
Thanks for sharing! Having owned a Versys 650, that's my experience with this engine. Great for 1 person to do everything. Loses some fun with 2 up at higher speeds. If you're mostly going solo, it's a great engine for just about anyone.
Me too , have owned the 2007 versys and now ktm 1190 but thinking about the new versys 650 tourer, just practical and enough power for the small roads and I like the new colour 2023.
On interstate I need to power from XX to XXX quickly many times with full luggage sides/top to pass safely or evade aggressive drivers with traffic. Had a 700cc with 59 torque and it was inadequate on interstate with of without luggage. This bike is better for local roads. Need 100+ torque on interstate.
One of the best Versys reviews! I loved my 2017. For me, the initial "reviness" high rpm's on the freeway got to me. I changed the rear sprocket to a 43tooth from 46. That totally changed the bike to my preference (such an easy way to completely change the bike's character). Reliable, fun, plenty of carrying capacity andenough power for me. I only sold mine because I'm 6'2 and wanted to ride some with my 6' daughter. Otherwise, no real disappointments. The heated grips and top box were great. I ended up with rare (in the US) VFR1200X.

I bought a 2009 (1st generation) Kawasaki Versys 650 used, with only 5,000 miles on it. Candy Lime Green.💚 My Versys has Monster Energy Graphics and mostly street mods. I love the Seat, (Super Comfort)and the Suspension, (Upside Down Forks & Fully Adjustable Rear Suspension). 🕵🏻♂️ I love the Styling, the Functionality, (On or Off road / With or Without Luggage) the Engine Performance, (smooth power delivery) the Sporty Road Handling, (17" front & rear) I run Dunlop Q3+ tires now, and they're a great tire. I also love the handlebar risers that give the Versys 650 a Perfect, Safe & Comfortable Riding Position. You can't beat the price of the Versys 650 ✌️🤑👍 especially when you're buying one, used. I wouldn't want a faster motorcycle, (but I don't want a slower one either). I wouldn't want a bigger, heavier motorcycle, either. The Versys 650 weighs 450 lbs. (Not, too heavy or hard to manage). Perhaps the Versys 650 "IS" the Best Motorcycle in the World ? 🤷🏼♂️ ?
I bought my 2021 Versys in July 22. I use Shinko E 705 tires and have ridden some serious gravel, some sand, and various non paved places. Not my preference but the bike handles it all very well. It has dropped five times at extreme low speeds and shows some scars. One day I rode it for 750 km with no problems. Last summer in one session I spent 18 hours with the bike. I had to get away from forest fires in BC. I like my bike. It also looks great in its dark grey, red and silver livery. I have added a windshield extension, Givi crash bars, wider foot pegs, heated grips and plugs ins for USB and cigarette lighter. I am just short of 24,000 km on the odometer and ready for its next complete warranty check over before that expires in August. Fastest speed I reached was 180 km/hr. An American rider clocked me at 110 miles per hour last summer on Hwy 93, the Banff/Jasper Parkway. I am 73. If your life is boring, get a motorcycle. It is Never 2 Late.
Have had my 2021 Versus 650 for 3 years now. Put 28,000 km on it so far. Use it mainly as a commuter. Easy around the city and comfortable on the highway. After 15,000 km I changed the original Dunlop tires and put on Michelin Road 5's. Big difference. I enjoy riding even more now. All in all a great, dependable bike.
I got a question, if you fit pannier on the side does it protrude out further than the tank? I'm looking into getting one but my commute is through dense traffic so filtering is a must lol
As a 64 yr old getting a first bike after 40+ since first having one. Shopping between this and the Honda CB500X. Maybe I should go smaller but this sure looks nice. Excellent video.
Honestly, I used to own this bike, and it really feels like a class above the CB500X. Get the bike you want, don't let me sway you, but that's my (biased) opinion.
I'm the same with you! Thinking either cb500x or versys650. At where I'm living now, the price difference is around $500 more for versys. So yeah, I'm very very veryyy seriously contemplating it
I have this exact bike but my wife, daughter, and son have a Honda Rebel 1100, Kawasaki Ninja 650, and a CFMoto 650 respectively and they all love how my bike rides better than theirs. They all say they want mine.

Very well tought out video: detailed but simple, you really took your time with the facts and all the reasoning for them. I really enjoyed that. I am currently in the process of buying a new motorcycle. I am considering Versys 650 and Tracer 700. Compared to the Tracer 7 the Versys is heavier but Tracer but doesn't have traction control. I like the Versys LCD display, TC and the implementation of modern technologies. I also really like that the rear suspension is easily adjustable without tools. I've had the chance to ride the ER6N a lot and I owned MT07. I can see that some parts on the new Versys are the same as on the old ER6N from 10 years ago (probably they stick to the "if it works don't change it" :) ). The engine probably underwent minimal changes to meet eco standards, but that 650cc is installed in many Kawasaki models, just like Yamaha's CP2. It would be great if there was a direct comparison between the new Versys 650 and the Tracer 7 2022/23 models. What Tracer users point out as the main advantage is that the bike is light and nimble while the Versys is allegedly not so much. I like that the Versys is more massive and feels bigger and more serious than the Tracer. Somehow it seems to me that the Versys would satisfy my needs, and yet I'm in a dilemma whether to make a mistake and not take a lighter bike because I use it a lot for commuting as well. 🤯🤯🤯
So I don't have any experience with the Tracer. I've sat on it, but that's about it. I can tell you from owning the Versys that it's an AWESOME bike to own and do just about everything with. It's still very nimble while underway, and to be honest, the bike has far more capability than most people have skills. I've never met anyone who owns a Versys 650 who isn't happy with it. The Tracer seems nice too, and I can see the appeal of it, and whoever is fans of one brand over the other is going to recommend their preferred brand (which is probably what I'm doing) but yeah, the Versys is a fantastic bike. So you can take that from me for what it's worth. Good luck in your search!
Yes I bought the Versys, I like the looks , tft is very good, yes traction control , luggage looks good on Versys 650 and better for longer distance . I just like the Versys more on the looks but just buy what you like , both bikes are great so do not make a dilemma.
I had a 2018 Versys 650. He talked a little about it, but it's a real top heavy bike....made worse by a real high gas tank. I had to constantly be aware of the top heaviness combined with the high seat height....thinks could get out of hand in the blink of an eye. I'm 5'10" and I could not flat foot the bike. And that top heaviness made for difficult slow speed 'parking lot' maneuvers. But over 15mph, it was a great bike. More power than I'll ever need, and the engine was smooth and vibration free.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I also found it to be more top heavy than other bikes, but I didn't find it difficult to drive at slow speeds. I think it just takes a little bit of practice because to me, it's not that it's difficult, just different than other bikes which have a lower centre of gravity. The Versys 650 definitely feels bigger than other 650 bikes in the Kawasaki lineup, and part of that is because of where it carries some of it's weight.
I’m 5”5” and have to tip toe I found it ok except when you had a three quarter tank if your at the lights with a slight side wind the fuel inside the tank slops side to side and the bike sways slightly , but you get used to it Loved my old bike and contemplating a new one , or the new 660 triumph adventure

To me its a featherweight bike, i used to ride hd's for 8 years (did 32 year of sportbikes before) the versys turns on a dime compared to a hd ( all is relative)
I owned the Versys 2007 version , then owned a ktm 1190 for 5 years but now I own again a Versys 650 metallic gold smoke since 1 month , super happy , very good for the Netherlands more than enough power.
It's a perfect bike in every aspect. I just have two changes that would make ideal bike for me: 19 inch front wheels And spoked tubeless wheels. It would what we need to hit some trail riding also.
I’ve got a 2022 Versys 650 LT. I love the bike, already have 2500 miles on it. Great fuel mileage and a comfortable ride. A big draw back for the, is the throttle fueling. Very abrupt and choppy. At this point in time, I’ve been unable to find a fix…
Great review! I've always liked the Versys, especially the styling of the previous model..would be nice to get all the tech upgrades with the look of the previous model. Still, this may well be my next bike if and when my old ST1100 dies (it probably never will!). I'm new to your channel and was also very pleased to hear you mention Jim Gilbert's as I just moved to just outside Fredericton last year!
Yeah, the Versys is such a great bike. Sporty enough to be fun, powerful enough to tour, practical enough to replace much less exciting and heavier bikes. It's great! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm also new to the area. I had a successful career in Ontario, but it was time for us to make a change and re-focus on family and this area, and the changes that we've made have really helped us to do that. Jim Gilbert's is an absolutely amazing place with fantastic people!

Interesting that Revzilla recently rated the Versys higher than the Triumph Tiger Sport 660. I was sure the 660 would be rated "better" based on all the hype around its release but they didn't think so. I love them both, but it was too easy to choose the Versys by the availability of a gently used one and savings of $5000 compared to a new Triumph. Have you ridden the Triumph ?
I haven't ridden the Triumph yet, I'd like to. One thing that I'll point out is that a LOT of motorcycle publications choose the LATEST bike over the best bike. I used to review cars for a living, and there are good reasons for reviewers to choose the latest vehicles, over the better vehicles. I have to give Revzilla credit, I think they still maintain their integrity. I don't always agree with all of their opinions, but I don't think they're showing a bias that isn't fair in most of what they do.
I own a 2009 Versys 650. I love it. It doesn't have a center stand, because the Versys is considered to be a Versitile ON Road / Off Road System. Center stands aren't the safest item for offroading, because when you're landing from a jump, they can flop down and hit the ground, (possibly causing an accident). They also account for extra weight on a motorcycle. Aftermarket centerstands for the Kawasaki Versys 650 are available. They cost about $130 (and up), but I really don't even want one on my motorcycle. 🤷🏼♂️ I also don't want ABS or Cruise Control on my motorcycle. However, I DID buy a $12 (wide version) Crampbuster Throttle Grip Attachment for my Versys 650. It's almost as comfortable as having cruise control, (in town,.. even more comfortable) and just slightly safer than cruise control, too. It took me a little bit of time getting used to using it, but after a month of usage, I feel much more comfortable riding with it on now, than without it. It helps out a lot, on long rides. It does what it claims to do, and I like it, A LOT ! 😎👍
@@intergalacticbasketballdro7186 Yeah, it's the electronic cruise of the bigger Versys 1000 that I think a lot of people would like on this bike. That would be my preference, but as you say. You can do several mods to get these to be perfect for you.
@@intergalacticbasketballdro7186 The Versys isn't designed to be an off road bike in any way. It's definitely not designed to jump. I think the biggest reason that this doesn't have a centre stand is because of the design of the underslung exhaust. But yeah. It's an EXCELLENT bike.
Why though? The larger front wheel would only be useful off road, and the rest of this bike isn't designed to be an off road bike. The fuel filter is exposed, the suspension is set up for road use etc. etc. I think what you really want is for a proper modern adventure bike from Kawasaki that could sit alongside the KLR. That's what I'd love to see from Kawasaki.

Does everyone else's Kawasaki snap or make a click noise when you shift? I own. 2017 and keep thinking I'm damaging the transmission whenever I shift. It goes into gear fine, but makes a snap noise. My ninja X10r doesn't do this.
The Versys definitely has a mechanical clunk to it. I don't know if I'd call it a snap. If you're in doubt about it, see if your local dealer can take a look at it. It's impossible for me to diagnose things online, but if it's what I think it is, then it wouldn't be abnormal.
Mine's making that noise always when I don't do perfect gear change (so most of the time). It's clunky but nothing to worry about. Had that since the beginning and no problems so far (+40k kms)
@@davidroos2 Yeah. I'm wondering if they're aiming for a price point. I've driven this bike on a cool morning and missed a smoothed downshift and had the rear step out on me. It wasn't scary or dangerous, but a slipper clutch would have helped prevent that. It's still a really great bike!
@@chrisw4215 Honestly, I don't think it should bother you too much. If you drive properly and don't really get extra aggressive, I don't think you'll notice the difference. Motorcycles have existed for decades without this rider aid. The biggest feature that people notice is that it has a lighter clutch pull... having said that, the Versys doesn't have a heavy clutch pull, so it may not matter to you at all. I had the Versys 650 for years and never thought about the clutch lever. So it's up to you, but it wouldn't stop me from buying it based on what you're saying.
The manufacturer doesn't list fuel efficiency numbers. I don't usually quote them either because it can really vary by rider. What I like to do is go on the forums for these bikes to see what everyone is getting. There is a range of numbers, but often in a forum, people will explain the types of riding that they do. I never specifically tracked my mileage when I owned this bike, but with the big tank and the decent efficiency, I remember being consistently impressed by my overall range.
I actually like that it still has the 17. It's a fairly sporty bike, and a 19 would change the feel of the bike, and lessen one of its strengths. Again, a lot of people want this to be an adventure bike, but it's not that, it's a sport tourer, and a very good one for the price.
@@PeterLoweOne but it WOULD be a great adventure bike with the addition of a 19" front wheel. As it is, it's still a very capable bike, and will handle more "adventure" than 95% of ADV riders would ever ask of it.
Hey there. Nice review, sir. One question. I plan to get my drivers license next year and would be interested either on the vulcan 650s or versys. Is the Versys suitable for a 5.6 person?
His Marius. I think it would be ok for you. It's definitely going to be a taller bike, and you'll notice that the centre of gravity is much higher on the Versys. It also has a large fuel tank, and that can add weight up high when you're full of fuel. Once you're riding, it's great, but standing over it, the bike does feel like a much bigger bike. You'd have to try it, and if you're nervous about it, it may not be the best seeing as you're a beginner, and you're at the shorter end of where this bike is best suited. It's always tough for me to judge, but it's one of those things where it may work great for you, but if you're uncomfortable, then you could go with another bike for 5 years, and see where you're at from there.

I'm much more keen on the Vulcan 650s because i'm absolutely in love with the bike's aspect but I don't know it behaves on longer trips, which I plan to do. I live in a crowded city but plan to go on country side on the weekends, mostly on the road, not off road...to give you an idea.
@@mariusik007 Honestly, if you're leaning towards the Vulcan S, that's the bike for you! I love the Vulcan S and would gladly take it on longer trips. The Versys comes with the better wind protection (windshield) and side cases, but you can get a windshield and luggage from Kawasaki for the Vulcan S and still come in under the Versys price point. So if you wanted to do overnight trips, you could probably do them just as comfortably on the Vulcan. Not saying you need the windshield etc... but it's an available accessory you DID want to go that direction.
Because it's based off of the Ninja 650 and it's more of a sporty tourer. It's also a great value. So adding a shaft drive would involve re-engineering, add weight, add cost, and probably slow the bike down. I think there's absolutely room for a shaft driven cruiser, but I think it would have to be based off the belt driven Vulcan 900 instead of this model.
I believe it's 33.3 inches. I will add that seat height can be a misleading figure because a 33.3 inch seat height thats also 24 inches wide would make it impossible to reach the ground. So comparing seat height between one motorcycle to another can make one appear harder to handle, when in fact seat width matters just as much. The Versys is a tall bike, but it's manageable for a wide range of riders in my opinion.
@@randycoloma846 It's going to be tall for you, but I don't think it will be too tall. It's the kind of bike that you'll need to try out to be sure. The fairing should give you great wind protection though!
I'm 5'10" and cannot flat foot this bike. It's also REAL top heavy. Even worse with a full tank. It can be difficult to control at slow speed or stopped....especially because of the tall seat height.

It definitely has more weight higher up than the other Kawasaki bikes that share the same engine, but I would say that it's not difficult to control at slow speeds for me, it's just different. The V-Strom is great too! I reviewed that on this channel as well. The Versys is a little more sporty, while the V-Strom offers a little more all-road capability (dirt roads etc). If you gave me either one, I'd be happy!

@@podunkman2709 A lot of the motorcycle industry uses engines that were introduced years ago, and have been refined. This engine is extremely reliable, and in this class, that's a huge plus. I guess the question that I would have for you is what do you want to see in an engine, that fits this class, and hits this price point? We can all wish for the latest and greatest tech, but that costs money. This engine is great fun for the money, and I think sometimes people need to remember that.
@@podunkman2709 you really have no idea. There's newer engines that aren't any better from other manufacturers. The sound is a bit lawnmower at idle due to the crank, but it pulls well. You've never ridden one

Hey. Thans for the video, it was inspiring and very informative. I bought it brand new last August and drove 4000 km. I'm satisfied with what I got for the money - if it were several thousand difference more I would have gotten something a little more, would it be worth it, i'm not sure. I have bought a central support, a low bench and a large wind shield, now I am completely satisfied with my choice.

It seems to me one of these bikes with a sprocket change and ECU flash would be as much of a Ninja 650 as I want, but one I could be more comfortable driving on my local shitty roads.
I always found that it was more than sporty enough for me on the streets. I think you may find the same thing. It’s not identical to the Ninja, but it certainly is fun to ride.

Oooh that's a tough one!! I REALLY like the Versys-X 300 and you're right, I haven't reviewed it yet, but I will as soon as the 2023 model arrives. So I'll be honest.. the CB500X isn't the bike that I would choose... but I would probably choose it over the Versys-X 300. The 300 is in a different class. So then it comes down to, do you want a CB500X which is a perfectly fine motorcycle, but feels a bit like a Honda Civic to drive... Good in every aspect, but not fun in any one way. The Versys 650 is FUN, versatile, and experienced riders will keep a bike like that for life. So to me, the 500 does bridge the gap between the two Kawasaki's but you have to sacrifice some character and fun if you go with that middle ground. I'm biased... I admit it... but that's my opinion.
@@PeterLoweOne The Versys 300X is an Enduro sport, where as the Honda CBX500 is purely street, so if you're try to decide between them,...chose the 300X if you wanna ride aggressively, off road, getting it dirty frequently, and drop it a few times. 🤔👍 Chose the 500CBX if you're trying to ride tame, on the road, keeping it sparkling clean, and upright 100% of the time. 🧐👍
I’m 5’8” and I own this exact bike. I cannot flat foot it but I am doing fine with it. It takes some practice and getting used to but is manageable for me.

i agree you to 100%. I´m from germany and i had one too. I like it very much. Its so easy and handy. The Engine is enough for sporty driving. this was a good decision to buy them
I have a question plz. I cant see that the versus has n full frame that surrounds the engin, does the versus's engin also hang on the engin's head like the CB500X? That is a major weekpoint i.m.o a fatal one. Thar is so much unwanted stress on the head. Thanx in advance for your feed back. Isnit a issue or can die bike handle small jump over 10 - 20 years is you really must jump? Kind regards
So, a couple of things. Any bike with the engine as a stressed member has been tested to take the abuse well beyond what a typical rider would put it through. But in the case of the Versys, this isn't a bike that I would jump. It's very much an ON-road bike, not an off-road bike. Something like the KLR would be tested to take the type of riding that you're talking about.
Does it have a locking gas cap? Will it cruise all day at above 70 mph? What is the top speed while cruising? Does it struggle to pull long uphill mountain interstate roads?
Yes, I can't think of any current road bike by Kawasaki that doesn't have a locking gas cap. It will definitely cruise all day at 70mph. I don't know the top speed, but more than you'll ever need is probably a great statement. I've owned this bike, and while I won't admit to breaking any laws, let's just say that I'm confident that it goes 180 km/h (110 mph+) and still pulls from there! Speed isn't an issue for this bike in typical road use. You won't struggle going up hills. It's fun, sporty, and plenty quick. It seems to be geared a little more for good acceleration rather than ultimate top speed, but again, if you're on the roads, you'll love the power.
It's frustrating that manufacturers have so few paint color choices. The year you might like to buy a new bike, the color offerings may not be to your liking. No purchase results. I loved your white Versys, black, not so much.

I don't find either of those to be uncomfortable, but the Versys is definitely very comfortable. I used to own one, and I've done plenty of all day rides without issue on that bike.
I'm not sure about that. Both would add a lot of expense to the buyer and the shaft drive would make it less sporty. Part of the joy of this bike is that it's just a blast to ride. I wouldn't want to dull that in any way with a drive system that adds a lot of weight and saps more power.
Same engine as a Vulcan S, yes. I would say that the Versys is better for 2 up riding because it has a standard rear seat (the Vulcan does not) and more suspension travel. The Versys also has a remote preload adjustment that makes adjustments for passengers and gear a simple and tool free adjustment.
The 1000 is a better bike with 2 riders, especially at high speed. But the 650 is lighter and more playful overall than the 1000. So once you get on the highway with 2 riders, you lose that quick acceleration that you still have at lower speeds. Overall the handling of the 650 is lighter and quicker to react. The 1000 has about 140 hp. I haven’t seen the spec for the 650 but it’s probably about 70 or so. At higher speeds, with extra weight, you begin to lose the extra power that you still have at lower speeds, and the handling is less quick to react, which you don't notice on the 1000 because it's a little less quick to react overall. Having said that, both bikes handle well and would be considered Sport Touring bikes by me.
@@PeterLoweOne Thanks for your reply. I will mostly be riding single with other bikes, but occasionally with my wife as passenger. I'm torn between nimbleness and power at this point and am having trouble deciding. I'm used to heavy bikes since I had a Harley Road King and then a Harley Road Glide Limited. I guess I'm leaning more towards the 1000 because I'm afraid that I will outgrow the 650.
@@patrickh709 I can't make a decision for you, but here's what I can add. The Versys 650 is probably just as quick (and likely quicker) than your other bikes, but it'll have to rev to be quick. If you're used to the bikes that you talk about, you may appreciate the larger engine of the 1000, and the handling of that bike will be a big step up from what you have been riding. The 650 is hard to beat from a value perspective. It is significantly less expensive than the latest 1000. So that's something to keep in mind. I'd happily by the 650 again, but I have my eye on something else in the Kawasaki lineup... But that's another video! 😉
I've owned both the 2018 Versys 650 and 2019 1000 SE with the electronic suspension. If I was going to do a solo day with just Twisties I would choose the 650 for sure. For two-up in Twisties it would be a toss-up but I'd lean towards the 1000. If the Twisties included a lot of hills and steep inclines then the 1000 for sure. For highway I would pick the 1000. The 1000 is quite a bit heavier but it's well balanced imo. You should consider your riding experience, confidence and weight of you and your pillion in making your decision
@@PeterLoweOne the reason I asked is because it seems that at least for the air filter+plugs+valves, the fairing must be removed, and then the seat + fuel tank. I guess I can live with that, but I am hoping that most other nuts+bolt+components are directly accessible. Sometimes things are engineered without any care as to accessing nuts+bolts+components, and sometimes service+maintenance is part of the design.
@@chadkline4268 I don't think the fairing is all that difficult to remove. I usually let the dealer take care of things for me, but I haven't heard that this bike is too difficult. I hope that helps!
@@ricksilver7398 I don't have that information memorized, but you can find the owner's manual on the Kawasaki website. I would say that when I owned it, it wasn't something that I worried about. Things were pretty simple and not too expensive.
I think, for a lot of people, if you can pick up a new, previous year model, that makes sense. If it were me, I'd go for the 2022 or newer with that TFT dash, traction control, and Rideology app. I think the updates do just what they're supposed to do, they bring this bike up to date and keep it competitive for years to come. Having said that, I really enjoyed my previous generation Versys 650. It's a great bike!
