Make Your bike run cooler and smoother by NOT routing some of your exhaust and crank-case gasses back into the engine.
Sounds good to me, just make sure you follow all state and federal regulations and don't tell them I told you how to do it ;}
Pretty simple on these bikes, but here are some parts that you might want:

Those reed valves direct air the opposite way to an EGR valve, they send a little timed puff of clean air into the exhaust only after the exhaust valve closes. Objective effects are hotter exhaust from cleaner burning of carbon monoxide and NOX fumes, and some describe less popping during engine assisted deceleration. Unless they have failed, the reed valves won't let exhaust gasses flow backwards into the engine, they are one way valves pointing the other way. The vacuum is a control line designed to close this pathway off during the high vacuum conditions of idle, air suction flow only happens when vacuum drops as the throttle opens. When operating normally this should not influence power output or torque at all.
@willsrestorations
@willsrestorations 2 года назад
Hey buddy, how you been. Are you saying that this is not advisable because that's what I'm saying, I think this is a very bad idea, please advise
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 2 года назад
@@willsrestorations I left mine alone for 26 years and have had no issue. That said, many guys modify their exhaust for some reason, and I suppose a modified exhaust might behave differently. Or, a bike with a vacuum leak might allow the air suction system to open at idle when vacuum should snap it shut. Rather than fixing a vacuum leak properly, some might remove the air suction system, and notice improvement if the leak was there. In a properly functioning system, there should be no noticeable improvement at all. If those valves stick closed, it would be like not having them at all, though if they stick open from carbon buildup I suppose there could be an issue. It's easy to clean those reed valves at every valve lash adjustment. I don't believe this system affects crankcase pressure, since the rudimentary free flowing "PCV" in this old bike is just a vent tube going to the outside of the air filter, with a dangling tube to drip oil onto the ground from there.

@@spelunkerd So blocking these intakes of clean air through the valve covers does not really affect performce and does not risk damaging the engine either? The effect would mainly be related to the exhaust fumes being less clean? I am making a VN800 bobber and would like a cleaner look by removing ”unneccessary” tubes etc. Would leaving the intakes open to suck unfiltered air be better or worse than blocking them with caps in your opinion? this is not EGR and it is not connected to the crankcase. This valve allow fresh air from air filter to be sucked to exhaust pipes directly to burn unburned fuel. You want only remove this when you tune your carb with AFR sensor because extra air in exhaust make problems. The crankcase has vent near bottom of second cylinder. This is not performance mod but it helps tune carb and makes exhaust pipes a little cooler

Are you sure that's EGR? It looks like its a PCV system. Usually it will keep the crankcase under a slight vacuum and if removed will promote oil leaks from blowby pressure.
@hossesarse
@hossesarse 6 лет назад
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed. A V-twin engine's crankcase undergoes a lot of pressure changes while the engine is running (high crankcase pressure when both pistons are down, and low pressure when both pistons are up) and the slight negative crankcase pressure actually reduces pumping losses and helps the engine run slightly smoother and more efficiently. Mr. Kawasaki knows a lot more about making an engine run strongly and efficiently than Mr. Cruizerdaze.

Best thing to do is just remove the hoses and vent the breathers straight to atmosphere.
@willsrestorations
@willsrestorations 4 года назад
As a Master motorcycle mechanic for more thanI'm not saying that that should matter all that much but I will tell you this that is not a good idea, first of all you need to understand what positive crankcase ventilation is, and removing this will only cause long-lasting long-term an understanding that excess blow-by needs to be removed from the motor it also helps the motor breathe properly and this will not make the motor run that is wrong, it will make it run hotter it will also trop access blow-by in the long run this will damaged valves and cause uneven pressure inside the motor. I understand people are trying to help but sometimes it will hurt and if you choose to do this I can guarantee you most of the time you will do serious damage. You could take my advice or his but you've been warned.
@CruiserDayz

I think it might be a bad idea. The system is not directly connected to the exhaust system. Other commenters on this video say this is a PVC system. I think they are right. Plugging this will trap blow-by gasses. It will accelerate the degradation of your oil. I’m not doing this one. I think my next mod is a tach, so I can see when I’m approaching 8000 rpm. again folks, this is NOT an EGR. this is a fresh air intake valve providing fresh air into the exhaust manifold via the rocker covers. the fresh air comes in thru the vacume valve from the air intake filter housing. the fresh air mixes into the exhaust manifold as the exhaust comes out of the head creating a leaner and cleaner exhaust at the end of the pipes. the crankcase vent is low on the #2 cyl. capping the rocker coverhose ports will help the motor run better, and cooler and will balance out the fuel mixture if u were to remove the exhaust pipe baffels or install aftermarket pipes.

DON’T do this to your bike! Dude has no clue what he is talking about! He messing with the PCV which is positive crankcase ventilation. It lets piston/cylinder blow by get re-introduced into the air intake tract for emissions. Sense when does exhaust gas come out of the cylinder head valve cover!? It doesn’t, Vulcans of these years don’t have an EGR system. If you look at your exhaust pipes do you see anything pulling exhaust from them for recirculation? Nope, sure don’t! Doing anything he’s doing is not going to help your performance, it’s all in your head, placebo.

As a master of motorcycle mechanic and a shop owner I advise strongly against doing a hack like this as you can cause some serious problems with your bike. Blow by is an essential part of elimination gases out of the heads. If you listen to guys on RU-vid they will destroy everything you own.

@@willsrestorations does leaving them open to the atmosphere make any difference?

@@criticalthinkerguy first you have to understand that there are reeds under the valve covers that will not work properly when leaving these open to the atmosphere and can only draw a tremendous amount of contaminants into the top half of the motor causing catastrophic failure. I don't understand why people want to modify something that's not modifiable.

Be very weary of all these weekend mechanics giving "fix" advice on here. Engineers designed these motors and the parts on there were put there for a reason. Unless you're an engineer knowledgeable on these engines, don't go "modifying" your bike without knowing how you will be affecting the engine's longevity.
