We live in rural South Australia where adventure and trail bikes are the go. So riding a retro Kawasaki to create meaningful content is “challenging”. Life however just would not be the same without ICE powered two wheels, so we’re doing our best to create for your entertainment ;-)
We have BIG plans for 2024 as 2023 has been a bit of disaster with the major hit and run in India, but that is behind us now (see separate video documentary on the crash and the aftermath).

Great video. I love your explanation of seat height. You are so very correct in your analogy of how different seat height statistics can be. I agree, one must actually sit on the bike to get an accurate assessment.

Thank you. Having done a lot of kms on it now I can say for certain it will comfortably get 280kms with 20kms left to get to fuel station. Ran it really low the other week and the refill took 11.2 litres at 279kms on the trip. We’re doing a longer trip in October to Tasmania so route planning and fuel stations will be a definite factor.x

Very nice review, I’m from the Philippines and I have the same bike. I like the retro vibes and the comfort of this machine. Mine is a year old as well and I’m still watching reviews 😂 The power is just in my sweet spot. I love it!

Thankyou. It’s a really good bike. 300kms from a 12 litre tank. Lightweight with grunt. Great for learners but also for those who prefer playing with twisty roads rather than long straight highways.

It was a total fluke. We hunted everywhere in Adelaide (not many dealerships) and actually found our local dealership had two in stock. One of those times thought the local dealership couldn’t possibly have one and they had two. A 50th Anniversary edition the Jaffa and this Candy Green. Looked so retro it was a no brainer. 🎉

Good review of a Z650RS I own a 2019 ZR900B with R3 Nitron suspension front/rear. Some of your comments cross over to the Z900 Gears ratio is very close, but makes for an awesome road bike with plenty of torque..in any gear. I too, keep grinding the foot pegs/boots on the Z900

Very nice bike.Flat foot is important for me for stability.You pointed out something very important in that the seat width makes a difference to that.Very good review. Who was playing the insrumental music at the end? Loved that.

It's simply amazing just how close they got to the original 70s Z650 and Z900 with their respective retro remakes. My father had a pair of '76 Zeds, a 900 and a 650. The Z900 got sold last year to a restorer somewhere on the east, can't remember if Sydney or Melbourne and hasn't found a home for the Z650 yet, so I know the reference points for these are very closely remade with just enough modernity

They got it spot on with the 900. The exhaust is wrong on the 650 and spoils the retro look imo.

I've got one in grey with a splash of orange; was torn between the two premium colours but have no regrets at all....both look stunning. It is a top bike, I love it. I came off a 2019 Ninja 650 (loved that too) but the RS suits my ageing bones better and whilst still very nippy doesn't encourage me to push on quite so much. I'm more than happy with the well-proven parallel twin; it's a fine engine and suits the character of the bike. It's a modern take on the original whilst not trying to be the original. Yep, a smashing reliable bike and well worth a look. Cheers, Popeye.

Kawasaki got it right! It really is a good looking bike. I owned a 2012 650 Versys and it was a good bike, just wish they would do a 270 degree crank to give the motor a little character.

Yes the motor is now practically vintage! I suppose they’re thinking if it ain’t broke….. I passed my test 25 years ago on its predecessor in the ER5 so in a way it’s good they’ve just developed a universal solution but at some point perhaps they’ll up their game. All the same I love the ride. I’m not a fan of straight line riding so it really handles the twisties but isn’t a comfortable bike for long distance. Having said that it’s in the budget category and for that reason it’s a bargain given the quality. Thanks for commenting really appreciate it.

A number of reviewers complain about the vibrations as the revs increase. Some say things improve as it breaks in. What are your experience with vibrations in all the wrong places and numb bits.

Hi there thanks for your comment. We have two of these bikes. Mine is the green version and the hubby has the anniversary edition. We both have experience of the vibrations but only in the foot pegs and it isn’t very much but it is there. We are wondering if the reason we’re not getting the vibrations others have reported is because the ECU has been flashed and remapped. We are both very experienced riders and this bike only comes in the learner friendly version in Australia. A company called Woollich do the harness kits to be installed by a Kawasaki dealer (to maintain the warranty) and is of course only legal if a rider can prove they have the licence category to ride the modified bike. So on long rides where we’re maybe on a straight road for quite a few kilometres it is noticeable in the pegs but it seriously isn’t a lot. I do tend to ride though on the balls of my feet rather than the arch of my foot so don’t know if that makes any difference either. The hubby also reports minor vibration. Neither of us feel it when riding bends and twisties probably because we’re concentrating on the road more. I know that probably doesn’t answer your question but maybe ask around for info from those with the restricted version as opposed to the unrestricted! All the best.

@Sticky_BEAK no, that's great. I had a 2015 versys 650 which had a rubber mounted engine and had some vibes in spots but never numbing. It was buttery smooth in other spots.

Z650RS is much more fuel efficient than Z900RS. If you going to do a lot of miles, Z650Rs could be better. z650 does about 25KM per liter. z900 about 16KM /liter

@@johntheaccountant5594 Cb650r is a better motorcycle overall. I think z650RS is a Flop. But, z650rs is a bit more fuel efficient than cb650r. Gasoline in US is not that expensive, here in Brazil its about 6 BRL(about 1.5 dólar per liter).

Here in Australia it looks like it’s red or green with gold wheels, and a new black version with black wheels. It’s a very “flicky” little bike which just loves corners. Thanks for your comment appreciate you taking time to watch.

I agree 250 kms range is not really much for any ordinary Australian weekend run out! Good for trips to local meeting points and biker cafes but for trips well it’s a concern.

@@Sticky_BEAK . Personally , in my experience , your ARSE tells you when you should stop for a bit . Nonetheless I am a BIG believer in being able to Stretch to 400 km range , just in case you MUST . Australia is HUGE and very empty in places . Just a point of view .

Yep it’s not a bike for big touring although they said that about my R1 and I managed to use it for 20,000 miles (in the UK), to tour and daily commute and never even thought about tank size! My very first bike was an SV650S which did a miserly 150 miles on a tank. Like everything planning is the key.

very nice bike thanks for the info... it looks like there is no open spot to bolt on a center stand,, the exhaust unit is there. do you know if this type of extra stand is available to add on?

Hi Peter, thanks for the question. I would say with the extensive stock exhaust and catalytic converter a centre stand will be impossible. If an after market exhaust were fitted which removed the bulk of the exhaust to one side then possibly. Things to consider though would be balance. They must have designed the bike for the current exhaust system and put everything where it currently is with balance and weight in mind (just saying). So it’s always something to consider when modifying a machine which adds weight to one side with an exhaust where it was fairly central. We get by with bobbins added at the back so we can use a paddock stand. There is also an option for a front paddock stand. At least using the paddock stand makes lubing the chain easier. I’ve had a few bikes with a centre stand and they are extremely convenient. Sadly, it’s not an option for the Z650RS.

I had to admit when I first saw it I was wondering about which after market to fit but it has a surprisingly good “note” to it especially when rolling through the 7000rpm level. The problem is the Euro 5 requirement for a catalytic converter which makes up the huge box sitting under the bike. Like many bike buyers I wanted to ditch this in the first weeks but to be honest, I really don’t notice it now except when having to clean chain lube off it. It is odd though not having a can running along the side of the bike or up under the seat. X

That bike is a real beauty. In my country they only sell it in depressing grey and the used market is non-existant so I can't justify having a cheap example resprayed to something less miserable. Ended up going for a Bonnie instead due to this. Nice review.

I got my 1973 cb 750 for 1800! My 1979 cb 750f with 16 VALVES for 2850! ( Wish I still had that one) I wish someone would bring back simple air-cooled motorcycles for everyday driving. ( Probably have to be made in China and sold by Walmart! Gees, better come with life insurance policy 😂!)

There are still one or two simple bikes but not at those prices (sadly) - Kawasaki W800, the Harleys and Guzzis I think are all air cooled, the Ducati Scrambler (ok not cheap), CB350 and a lot of the Enfields. Some more budget than others. When I went searching for a “simple” bike I was after less electronics, less gadgets and simple to ride. The Z650RS uses an “old” engine which they use in many of their models and it doesn’t have modes. It does have ABS and a slipper clutch! I’ve never been a fan of ABS but the slipper is a good addition for new riders although some would say makes it a bit too easy to make mistakes and not learn from them. You’re right though about the Chinese bikes but don’t know about reliability of any of them. Ah the good ‘ole days seem to be long gone.

95% of Moto guzzi are still air cooled,the Guzzi V7 850 is air cooled,EU5 compliant,shaft drive and the valves take 30 minutes to do with basic knowledge,they are also still made in Italy and pretty cheap new.@@Sticky_BEAK

Any motorcycle can be “tuned” in Australia as long as it doesn’t invalidate the warranty, unless the owner isn’t concerned about the warranty. Where people fall foul is flashing an ECU or tuning a bike when they have a restricted licence. In Australia that would be any kind of learner licence or probationary class of licence. I’ve been riding for 26 years with continuous motorcycle ownership throughout. If I were a learner I would be riding a modified motorcycle unsuitable for my type of licence. All this means to me is when I sell this motorcycle, I must check the class of licence of the buyer OR have the dealership remove the harness and return the motorcycle to its factory ECU settings. Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for watching the video and commenting. The bike with fuel is claimed by Kawasaki to weigh 186kgs and the manual shows a maximum carrying weight of 180kgs. So rider and luggage, or rider and passenger, or rider and passenger and luggage must not exceed 180kgs. I ride solo and weigh 80kgs which leaves me 80kgs in soft bags on the rear end. I’m not a hard case fan anyway so I use Krieger bags, but Lone Rider is another good brand as is mosko. As for the rider, it is an excellent first bike with its forgiving slipper clutch and ABS. But, it is also very quick and I suspect the light throttle can catch new riders out. Off the shelf in Australia it is LAMS friendly so is restricted which is excellent for a years worth of learning. Then there is a Woolich ECU flash which is available, which a dealer can do & this brings the bike up to unrestricted full power levels. We had the bikes flashed before we collected them new, so have not ridden the restricted bikes except for test riding. We have been riding for 25/40 years between us but it meant we could pay for a LAMS bike yet get full power. Couldn’t be happier with these bikes. They are extremely agile, light clutch and serious fun. Hope that helps.

I loved the firebird when it came out with its gorgeous seat but yes pretty tall 😬 I have a 30” inseam. They used to say women had wider hips for child bearing but I reckon men have wider hips so as not to squash things. My hubby has a 29” inseam and can get both feet flat on ground. Or…… are his boots thicker on the sole! I guess a way to solve the problem is some built up soles on the boots!!!!! X

Ciao, non c'è un notevole eccesso di calore del motore durante la guida. Il sedile e la posizione di guida sono ben lontani dal motore principale e lo scarico è ben al di sotto del piolo, quindi nessun calore da lì. Posso dire che il calore non è un problema. Cordiali saluti x

Perhaps future MCs will sport gyros so when one slows to a crawl or even stops the bike totally self balances or even 90% or whatever would make it ultra easy. no feet down at intersections! Seat height becomes moot,,,, Totally doable of course and probably in store for future Ebikes when battery tech catches up with potentials. Something else I see is power steering making otherwise ridiculous geometries totally doable meaning the bikes can be both more agile AND more stable at speed yes will be heavier (imagine WAY bigger tires with HUGE contact patch!) but extra wight matters not if it works better and never falls over! I can hear the moaning already....change pisses off the currently skilled.....but not me I LOVE "better" period....assuming I can afford it lol

Some great ideas there. Yes everything moves on and changes as it must in changing times. But I do wonder if long long rides and cross nation adventures will stand up to the changes or perhaps as with the bikes the way we ride and length of the rides will also change. The future will always be fun as long as there’s some form of motorcycle in it. I wonder if Capt Kirk’s bike will soon be built. X

I was considering this bike last year when I got my license, but that engine pushed me away from it, it sound horrible, no matter what you do to it. Thanks for the review though!

Thanks for your comment. When it revs up beyond 7000k it howls and sounds awesome but is a bit quiet below that as a result of the pain in the neck cat added to meet standards. There are aftermarket exhausts for people who like a baffle out howl. The worst engine/exhaust note I ever had was a VFR800i which sounded like a sewing machine, and the best were twin termignoni exhausts on a Ducati 748R. I’m too old now to kind of worry about riding a growler but hope you find a bike sound you love. All the best.

@@Sticky_BEAK Yes, I did :) . I got an Suzuki Sv 650, it sounds really nice, and looks great with some aftermarket bits on it. It does not look as good as a z650rs, but I love the sound of it :D. Ride safe !

Very similar tank. We saw an original 900 recently in a motor museum and the “look” is very similar especially the tail end. The seat is comfy but could be better. About 200kms and start to feel pressure on butt bones but then I’ve got a fat a-e so maybe that’s just me.

In Australia this bike is restricted to make it learner legal. When we purchased them we had the dealer flash the ECU with a Woolich harness specifically designed to remap for top performance. This took the output up by 10+hp. Without putting it on a dyno can’t get an exact figure but performance is excellent.

My husband has the same bike but 50th Anniversary edition (I’ll do a video soon comparing the two as they are slightly different) and on one ride he had a warning triangle pop up. The dealer hooked the bike up to their diagnostic computer and it seems to suggest the bike had at some point got too warm. Not engine overheating but an unknown something else. As the fault number didn’t require anything but recognising the fault it cleared itself and has never re-occurred since. We were riding the same roads, same air temperature, same fuel loads same everything. Bikes are same age purchased on same day. My bike has never shown any kind of fault. Dealer said it just could be an anomaly. The fault light didn’t result in any changes to the bike while the fault was active eg not being able to start engine or ride. We put it down to “technology”. We’ve never had any kind of issues with either of them so far. As brand new bikes we expect a certain level of reliability and apart from my Ducati 748R we’ve only ever owned Japanese bikes which have always proved to be extremely reliable although these are our very first Kawasakis. Anyway hope this helps.

@@meshplates it’s going to depend on how handy you are with the throttle but the bike easily returns 250kms but on lengthy runs we’ve been closer to 280kms. However, we live in South Australia where the upper speed limit is 110kph and the fines are high. This tends to curb the temptation to wind on the power regardless as police love hiding behind bushes. The tank is 3 litres lighter than the bikes brother the Z650, and I think this is for the retro styling but it doesn’t limit our riding as we are hunting for a coffee shop or lunch break after a couple of hours.

Oh wow would LOVE to know how you go with ebikes. Here in Australia very slow to get a grip on ebikes unless riding in cities as the rest of the country is fairly large so distance and charging is a problem. Cars started to pick up in sales but now dropped right back as the infrastructure is slow to be installed with Teslas sitting at the dock for over a year with no takers. Think we’re a bit backward down under but all watching with interest. Not many brands here but a bit of innovation. Chinese EVs selling at half price of Teslas is becoming a factor. Interesting times.

OBVIOUSLY seat height is simply the lowest point of the TOP of a seat to the ground while the motorcycle is perfectly vertical. Well that is simply the technical height of a bike's seat but I dont think there is any perfect way of conveying the effective seat height simply because bikes are all different as far as WIDTH at various points which can have a massive effect on how one's legs make it to the ground ....with long flexible legs one could perhaps negate all the hindrances the identical model might inflict on a shorter legged rider. There are a number of specs on motorcycles that become difficult to quantify by measured numbers alone...even peak horse power might be largely meaningless if it is so high up and so briefly encountered in the rpm range that in real life one never even gets it there! Ya know? ...Maybe specs should use an average test subject and use effective numbers to convey the real life effect? Sort of like those weather reports where it says something like "Well it is 50 degrees F on thermometer but it FEELS just like 35 degrees" Why? well wind chill which has to do with moisture and wind and how much sunlight is making it to the surface of the planet in a given location it can be HUGE! The difference between being totally comfortable or absolutely miserable even!

Really! I’ve had a lot of different bikes in my life and find this bike is a bit too quick and easy to steer. If anything it oversteers but that’s possibly due to low weight and low centre of gravity. I was after a bike which took the weight off my wrists so it’s awesome for those who want higher bars than a sports ride. My last bike was an MT09 and being a street sport body weight was transferred to the wrists. This is what it says on the label, retro styling with sports tech. Simple, without modes (never used them on the MT09 even though it had three of them), a trusted engine which is used right across the range, and very very tipable for the twisties. For aggressive sports bike riders or straight line low down cruiser riders it’s probably not going to fit the bill but I (we have one each) love it.

I wanted to buy a nice commuter/everyday bike, and this one caught my eye. However, I was disappointed when I found out that these bikes still cost around $8500 usd secondhand and a whopping $10,000 usd new. Especially when I learned that the bike has entry-level features, which I think is a huge rip-off.

I guess the bikes are priced differently around the world. Here in Australia they are $13500 (give or take) new on the road. That’s Australian dollars. Personally I love its old school vibe. Less about the features and more about just the riding. Have you considered any of the Royal Enfields? They might be cheaper and they’re developing all of the time and getting better and better.
