As someone who is old enough to have ridden the original, I can say that the first thing we did in the US after purchasing a Z, was to replace the original exhaust with a 4 into 1 system. Gladly I do not have to take that step with my new one. Although the stock exhaust on the RS is a little mild compared to my old Kerkers!

I took off the Akra that the previous owner had installed and replaced with a Yosh Cyclone that I sourced from Europe. I may replace the Yosh with a K-Factory "long can" slip on from Japan, what pipe are you running?

Was the ECU "flashed" to cure poor fuelling at lower revs? My friend has a demo model and it's pretty jerky as it pulls off. Fine when rolling, iffy pulling out of slower bends...

Looking at my next bike and this is in the running. When I look at this bike is see the history of the original Z which was a benchmark of performance. That makes liquid cooling, mono shock, 4-1 exhaust all logical. A true Modern Classic. As always, great work.

Guys if you think twin shocks are a good idea then you’re mistaken, reason being due to different forces exerted on both sides the Fran experiences a twisting motion that can destabilize a bike, especially if you hit bumps while cornering.

I sprang for the Akro header and Muffler (oh sorry...silencer). Just picked it up from the dealer last week and took the long way home to the tune of a couple hundred miles... It's as fast as I would want a bike to be, because of course I tested that out. Coming from a 850 lb bagger, the Z900RS is a feather flicking into curves. I haven't been this pleased with a motorcycle in ages. Pure joy.

This is a true “modern classic.” Like the Triumph Bonneville range it takes its styling cues from the original bikes and combines it with the most modern technology in one beautiful package. I really appreciate the ‘improvements’ such as the single real shock, the 4-into-1 exhaust and the water cooling. My current bike is a T120 Bonneville. If I change it for anything it will be for a Z900RS.

I had an original Z900 back in 1976 yeah I’m an old guy. Took the 4x4 off in favor of 4x1. I could take the baffle out to replace the fiberglass with steel wool. I am patiently waiting for the day when the big 4 revisit and make modern versions of the 90s sportbikes, 1992 zx7r, cbr900rr, gsxr750, fzr600. The twin headlights, analog clocks, and crazy graphics were so cool. And they would be even better now with LEDs, modern power, electronics, fuel injection, and ABS. Those were the bikes that my generation fell in love with, and that is now the generation with the disposable income. Come on, big 4, make it happen.

My Father bought a new 1975 Z-1 900. It was the last year of the Z-1 before it became the KZ-900 in 1976. He gave it to me when he felt he was "too old to ride anymore," one year before he passed. It was the fastest thing on the road in 1975 but by the time it was mine, it wasn't as fast as 600cc sport bikes. It didn't handle very well & the breaks were terrible. It WAS a super cool bike that always got complements at bike nights & it was a perfectly competent commuter that still had enough power to get you thrown in jail if you were trying to. The Z-900 RS is one of the bikes I'm most interested in today as it still has the "Cool Factor" of my Father's Z-1 & there's not a doubt in my mind that it's head & shoulders above the original Z-1 on every level.

Gets a lot of attention here in the states from strangers at gas stations who used to ride the original one years & years ago. I started looking at the cb1100, but the modern wheels & tires & power of the Z won me over.

I had new ‘74 and ‘75 Z1 900’s in those years. On both, I cut the exhaust mufflers off at a point under the motor where the mufflers were welded to the pipes from the engine. I welded VW muffler extensions to the four pipes. It looked like it had straight pipes, was muffled enough, and sounded like an Indy car. We had to reduce the carb jetting a little to get the mixture right ( more back pressure), but it still ran 135mph. Most fun I’ve ever had on a motorcycle.

Hey Motobob thanks a lot for thorough info! Gonna ask you to give us a hand here. Coming from a Yamaha FZ6 myself which is a very decent all rounder (unbeatable bang for the buck ratio) and my shortlist for a substitute is this z900rs and the new awaited xsr900. I know by heart all the specs on both, but gonna have to trust you on the feels since where I live it's just impossible to get your hands on a demo bike of these. I measure 1.70m and weigh 70kg (mind the metric system) and I know ergonomics will be an important feature to help me make up my mind. I did test the r nine t and felt too large and heavy, and the speed twin which ergonomically was great, but I prefer the smoothness of the 4 pot engine I think. Cheers!!

Still got my Jaffa after buying it in 2018. I don’t think I’ll ever part with it, and it’s the best colour. Done plenty of miles on it now, and it’s been faultless apart from the snatchy throttle which is easily fixed with a ECU flash. Only problem if you buy the 4 into 4s is you can’t apparently use the centre stand if you have one fitted, and a centre stand is essential in my books. I’ve got the Kawasaki centre stand, Kawasaki heated grips and grab rail. I haven’t touched the exhaust and don’t intend to either.

Always loved this bike. All of the "improvements" are, well, improvements. Why in the world would you compromise the livability and performance when you don't have to?! This, while they clearly have been able to maintain the classic look. Less weight, lower build cost, less complexity, more reliability. No complaints! I rode a brand new 1974 Z1 in 1974: 81bhp, 510 lbs. Scared the shite out of me :). And a lot of owners ditched that 4-into-4 for a lighter, louder 4-into-1...which simply made sense. Looking for new rig now, and I'm seriously considering this against the S1000GT, 1000SX, and a couple other nakeds mainly because of the looks (and it's a very competent piece)! Bags and fairings are out there!

like has been pointed out by other owners of the original z1, back then the very first mod we all did to our z1's was to buy a 4 into 1 exhaust, so anyone who bitched about the new bike not having 4 separate exhaust aren't old z1 owners, they are just trolls looking for something to complain about...... the scavenging effect associated with 4 into 1 exhaust will outperform 4 separate exhaust pipes every time......

A stunning looking bike and I was all ready to treat myself to one as a second bike this year, but this years colours are just so dull I had to pass on one.

I think they knocked it out of the park with this one, despite minor critiques, it’s arguable the best looking modern retro on the market

I figure it is the fastest, but I think the Triumphs look better. Z900RS is gorgeous, a real conversation piece.

The looks are incredible, but the open gap between the seat and wheel is too much for me. It could use a bit more body work to make up for the missing twin shocks, in my opinion.

Thanks. Great video. I happen to be filming this bike today. It's mostly amazing as you said, however , did you notice a snatchy throttle? It somewhat spoils it for me.
@elevationmoto6208
@elevationmoto6208 2 года назад
Yes. Fuel cut on decel causes it. ECU flash is said to fix it. 9000 miles with stock ECU: it does not bother me much with my moderate pace of riding. If I rode twisty roads very fast in 3rd gear I would care about fixing it.
@namduran
@namduran 2 года назад
The snatchy throttle can take a bit of getting used to, especially when you come from a silky smooth one. It takes a bit of gentle caressing to smooth it out but you get used to it after a while. You can of course spend £300 to remap the ECU but it doesn’t bother me so much as to warrant forking that kind of cash out. Overall it’s a cracking bike with plenty of power and great handling for the road.

Well, in fact I did ride a Z-1 back in the day. Mine had a 4 to 1 exhaust, so this bike looks the part for me. With modern suspension and brakes, I like everything about it. If I could just sell the wife on the idea there would be one in my garage.

'Jaffa' paint scheme for the win. Having said that, I do like the black/yellow colour scheme of the Z900 SE.

Great video 👍 A great bike but just a bit too tall for me. I did ride one with a lower seat but it just spoilt the geometry for me. Some may complain about the exhaust but it's no where near as bad as the one on the z650RS. It's just a shame they didn't add the cooling fins and a proper scilencer to the 650 RS. The lack of attention to detail on the 650RS against the 900 spoils it for me

Got an alternative in mind that has a lower seat? Triumph Street Twin has a fairly low seat.

@@elevationmoto6208 yes your right it has or if you really wanted to go full retro both the T100 & T 120 have lower seats. However I like Kawasaki but I just wish I I could love that z650 rs a little more

I will say, owning this bike, as cool as the wheels look, the size of the rotor combined with the location of the air stem makes it virtually impossible to maintain proper air pressure using your average fuel station air compressors. I,m literally riding with my tires way out of whack because I can,t finds decent compressor. Nothing 90* valve stems wouldn’t cure i guess. 🤔

Another good production. Thank you. I like this bike and want to ride one. In the ‘80s I had a 1975 Z1 900. It was a fun bike and I put a lot of miles on it. As for the exhaust, almost everyone with a Z1 replaced the stock exhaust with an aftermarket brand called Kerker. They had a unique sound.

You should definitely try to get ahold of a Honda CB1100. Would love your opinion on one as a modern retro!
@LA_Commander

I've owned one for three years now and love it. But I have to admit, this new Kawasaki Z900RS is a little bit better in every category. If I had to choose now, I would get the Kawasaki. But Honda sold the CB1100 from 2013 to 2018 here in the US and it was kind of a niche bike and didn't have high sales. But I love mine. Get compliments on it everywhere I go. But the Honda is air cooled so it looks more authentic and less maintenance. But because of emissions Honda had to cancel the 1140cc air cooled inline 4. A big shame.

Twin shocks don t have the same stability as a mono shock when taking a corner. I have a honda monkey and while in a corner the twin shocks seem to make the back wheel wobble just slightly. I really appreciate the mono shock on my z900 rs. thanks for the video.

Love your studio Bob! The lighting reflection on the bikes suck. Maybe you could put a sheer curtain or something to to hide the honey comb effects of the bikes. To me it takes away from the fit and finish of the bike(s) especially on a glossy paint. Just something to think about.

right , the reflections are confusing and detract from the bikes design
