I have to agree with you about the gold nib. I just got the Sterling Silver AL Sport which came with a matching monotone gold nib in medium and it’s extraordinary ! Thanks for your review !
I was super curious about this nib! Thank you for sharing your experience with it. The AL sport is probably my favorite fountain pen (with the steel nib), and I’ve thought about how I might prefer that to the entry level gold nib pens in the same price range.
I would have liked to have seen both pens use the same ink cartridges for a better, IMHO, comparison. Would love to get a gold nib for my AL Sport. Thank you for the review!
Great video. I've been a fan of Nomos for a while and am getting more into Kaweco fountain pens. Interesting to see what an upgrade the gold nib is to the already-nice Kaweco sport. It may be a little hard to justify that price jump, but am looking into getting the Nomos Kaweco AL Sport.
For how both come across the Audio , they both sound scratchy as hell! I have a Cheap ass Moonman with a med nib and writing on cheap typing paper there is no sound whatsoever when I write with it and it's the smoothest writing fountain pen I own. they both sound like you are writing with a pencil, as I have a TWSBI Go that feels just like writing with a #2 pencil no matter what ink I use. Not saying it's bad or good, just a different feel altogether. I was thinking of buying a KAWECO Sport transparent gray with silver trim in a Med nib, but with the way yours sounds, I may hold off and purchase a different brand.
Honestly they were scratchy as hell when I first got them but with use, they have gotten so much better! I still prefer the gold nib to the steel but this was my first time really writing with a Kaweco and now... I am a little addicted to them!
Why would you buy an expensive gold nib which is stiffer than the cheap steel nib? I am scared you break your index finger when you write... but you have a very nice handwriting!
Nice.. is it better to have gold or steel nibs out of curiosity? Is it worth it.... if it make s you happy and it isn't hurting you financially.. then there's no problem at all. It's a wonderful collection that can stand the test of time compared to all these ballpoint pens that are throw aways. Much respect Craig!
I like the feel of gold nibs more. Typically it’s smoother but it also depends on the tipping material and the grind. I’ve just had better experiences with them! I carry a ballpoint with me for work and EDC usage. The fountain pen is my creative writing and journal companion!
They are wonderful! They definitely need a good cleaning/flushing before use. Both nibs were hard starting and railroading right out of the box. After a couple flushes with warm water, they were perfect!
Craig, thank you for the awesome video - I really enjoyed your comparison. 😀 I think the upgrade is worth every penny! I recently upgraded to the STERLING SPORT LE and man I love that Kaweco! I wish they’d produce piston fillers again like the vintage Kaweco Sport fountain pens. Looking forward to upcoming videos!! 🙋🏻♂️ - Dominik
When Goldspot did an interview with the head of Kaweco, they said that making a piston filler is their goal for the future! I hope so too! That sterling sport sounds amazing!
Lamy for sure! They make their own nibs in-house and everything is made there. I do love Kaweco but Lamy is a real upgrade! I have a new video coming out this weekend on the Lamy Dialog 3 😃
I wouldn't give a dollar for the Lamy gold nib. It's smooth, but so is a one dolar Wing Sung. Smooth is nothing. The Lamy nib is seriously flawed in design, and has poor tipping. It looks great, writes smoothly, but wears our very, very, very fast, if you use it early and often.
@@CraigRoccanova An upgrade in what way? Lamy nibs are lousy. Of all the large, brand names pens out there, I get ten requests to repair Lamy nibs for every three from other companies. It's really worse than this because few people want a Lamy nib repaired, but prefer to just buy a replacement. I don't even try to repair Jinhao nibs because it's cheaper to just buy a replacement, but the requests I get are about equal between Jinhao and Lamy. Strictly with steel nibs, and discounting dropped pens, the number goes up to about fourteen to three. Making nibs inhouse is seldom a good thing, and only a very, very, very few companies have been able to do so successfully. Lamy is not one of them.
I have a brass and Steel Kaweco and really really interested in upgrading Both to Gold nibs. The total comes out to $380 : ( very pricy for two spare gold nibs for these pens. Gonna sit on it and wait till i can sell something for them. Should i pass?
For that price, I would look into some other pen options! To be perfectly honest, the steel nibs from Kaweco are perfect! I do like my gold nib but remember you can always swap it around to other pens. It's nice that they are so interchangeable!
These nibs are so easy to switch from pen to pen that you can really get by with one nib. Just put it on the pen you'll be using that day. But they really are overpriced when compared to what other companies charge for the same, or even much better, gold nibs.
