We had a fireworks show like no other last night in Cincinnati…a game that will go down as an all-time Monday Night football classic as Jayden Daniels went shot-for-shot with Joe Burrow and came away with the win. It’s the first game since AT LEAST 1940 in which neither offense punted or turned the ball. Just rare and special stuff out of both offenses…but this was Jayden’s night.
The touchdown to Terry McLaurin on 3rd & 7…dropping a perfect ball right in the bucket…with an unblocked Geno Stone coming to destroy him is as close to a “Heisman Moment” as we’re going to see in the NFL. It doesn’t get better than this…and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a better overall performance from a rookie QB in my life. No seriously…I mean look at this…
Jayden set the NFL’s rookie record with 91.3% completion percentage…put up over 300 yards, threw 2 TD passes, ran in another, and had a near perfect passer rating. The Commanders put up points on all 6 of their drives last night…and have now scored on 14-straight possessions (excluding kneel downs to end the half or end the game). Jayden is currently leading the NFL in completion percentage, still hasn’t thrown an interception…and nothing about the way he’s playing looks like a rookie.
The Commanders have taken over 1st place in the NFC East now at 2-1. The defense still has some things to figure out for sure, but with Jayden playing the way he’s playing, I’ll continue to maintain that these Commanders are going to be in the mix for an NFC playoff spot this year.
I’m going to dig into the Bengals side more tomorrow…but this defense has some issues. They finally did better with stopping the running backs - holding Brian Robinson to just 2 yards per carry - but they had big breakdowns in coverage…and the QB runs were a problem. I was worried about the d-line…and I think we saw Cincy get more aggressive at the line of scrimmage and with blitzes to try to make up for what they’re lacking there…and it led to some of the issues in coverage we saw. They miss DJ reader. Sam Hubbard… i said this to hamilton yesterday… he doesnt look sam hubbardy to me. I dont think he’s at 100% from his training camp injury.. I think he d line is a big problem that affects everything else and i dont know how they fix it. Trade?
The Bengals offense was as good as it gets last night - this defense was the let down. There’s an inbalance going on. We gotta get it together… all phases. Last week it was the opposite. It’s like they just can’t get everything clicking at the same time right now.
Next week’s game at a suddenly red-hot Carolina - the Andy Dalton revenge game - is now an absolute must-win. Luke Kuechly told me yesterday that he’s not writing the Bengals off at 0-and-3…Burrow said yesterday by no means the seasons is not over. Im a realist, the numbers are not pretty …teams that start 0-3 have only made the playoffs 2.5% of the time- that nightmare statistic is floating around… but that was mostly with a 16-game season before the extra wild card spot was added. It’s possible. They showed it on offense. They showed it on defense against patrick mahomes. Get it together - and be the first team ever, in nfl history… to start 0-3 and win the superbowl. Do the most bengals thing ever. What do i means? It can never be easy for the bengals, there’s an allergy to being a favorite… they dont want it easy, you dont wanna take advantage of a healthy burrow to start the season.. You wanna be in a hole, disregarded, left for dead. The underdog. Now you are. Go get it.
