Very nice perfect for the river well thought out seating position and layout.

Thanks, have been using it a lot lately, as I also do a lot of bird photography it makes a very stable dry platform for this especially when I have some expensive camera gear would not trust it on a normal kayak. Can also get very close with electric motor as well as stand and shoot photos.

The advantages of asymmetric hulls is to create a pressure difference much the same as a wing produces with a movement of air over its surfaces it adds lift and in the case of a water craft that lift is seen as an increase in push as a water melon seed is propelled forwards by an increase of pressure between the thumb and the index finger. Once a certain speed has been reached the push of asymmetric hulls provides that affect. Normally asymmetric hulls are used in sailing proas and small paddled fishing craft that may on occasions have a sail and the flattened hull side is always to the lee side and it’s also the side which mounts the single out rigger, which is rarely asymmetric but not exclusively so the size of the out rigger hull a determining factor, there is no bow or stern to such a craft the sail is physically lifted and repositioned “shunted” is the exact term fore and aft in tacking to the wind . Proas are really innovative and a celebration of sailing ingenuity. Because this craft in question is basically a fishing kayak it will generally be paddled slowly perhaps with an electric trolling motor or used stationary the twin hulls would certainly add stability with standing and with net casting but with that outboard well I just don’t know it should serve to reduce fuel costs marginally perhaps I see it’s green in colour that’s nice. To be honest I’m not sure I understand the advantages if any in this home built example perhaps it is more fanciful than realistic. To my thinking a regular catamaran hull set up would work better , certainly easier to construct, a round hull would work well in shallow waters while a V shaped hull would be so easy using marine ply in making a fat forwards bow and a tapered trailing stern but lose out with an increase of draft but gain slightly with the keel effect a V shaped hull confers. However I can’t deny the enjoyment factor of building such a craft to envisage an idea and pursue it to its completion which is its own reward so we’ll done to this DIY home builder. I am currently working with coroplast or coroflute ( trade names ) sheets often used as political signs ( thank goodness for elections to produce something useful.), which is rigid depending upon thickness ( I’m discussing the plastic sheeting and not the...... well never mind) and direction of fluting note that 2 layers opposed at 90degrees and heat bonded is incredibly rigid , it is of course water proof, light in weight, durable and mendable also easily transportable , and very cheap, and as mentioned easy to bond with a simple iron over parchment paper. It is also easy to cut and fold instructions are available within RU-vid on that. Ply requires a protective finish and is much more expensive the overall build make it heavier. Also the tools required the gluing , the sanding , the fibreglassing and painting add considerably to cost and equipment required . Coroplast sheeting comes in different thicknesses and colours however thicker sheets are increasingly difficult to bend so depending upon how innovative one is and a few evenings in the lounge room welding with the family iron (without steam ) might be better entertainment and more productive than watching syndicated USA whatever’s shows. Air Ventilation is only required should you start burning the plastic sheets as a revenge if your attempts go in a disordered direction away from intended design. Also using different coloured coroplast sheeting adds something depending upon ones innovation. Remember to recycle the unwanted plastics. Floatation devices adding rigidity can be made using plastic soft drink and milk bottles which can be heat shaped to fit into the design by using a heat gun or hairdryer on a high setting and squeezing between boards to get the shape required. A few bottles can bound together with cut up strips of the same drink bottle plastics that will shrink upon heating making the result very tightly bound. The several air chambers mean that in a disaster the little craft will in all likelihood float. A vessel with no chambers or a perhaps two well...your life jacket will prove useful and swimming is a wonderful exercise., myself I’m somewhat lazy. Reason it out one can build a raft of tethered heat moulded bottles and then cover it all in coroplast sheeting adding an intuitive nautical line research various hull designs in RU-vid for inspiration. If ever you do use the living room make sure the finished effort will fit through the door. Larger works can be fashioned in segments and assembled outside. Oh a few bottle caps and the screw design in the bottle can be fitted into the rear of the boat and after use any water can be drained out with gravity . Recycle please and with innovation there are many other projects that can follow on from these principles and experience. A transportable unfolding tent made with that flexible water proof super tape , I’ll leave you to research the exact product is one idea that with a boat or a few boats can make a holiday cheaper and more fun . Simply pack up a trailer or roof rack with these light weight innovations and assemble on site .

Geoff, Congratulations on this near-exact replica of the patented Wavewalk 700, launched in 2015. They say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery 😄 The extensions on the sides of your boat are redundant, IMO, since they add little stability, and interfere with efficient paddling. The original W700 doesn't feature such extensions, and neither did the now discontinued W500 that preceded it.

Hi, what are the advantages of the asymmetrical hulls? Build looks great. What is your top speed?

Asymmettrical hulls are built this way, main reason easier to build with the one straight edge and lock together with the cross braces/bulkheads, makes it extremely strong and durable, top speed around 15-18klm per hour with 3.5hp tohatsu, 10klm with 1hp electric.

Awesome boat. I've been looking all over internet a design like this. Did you build it? Can you share a plan?

Thanks for the compliment, sorry I do not have a plan as such, I just drew a rough sketch with guess measurement after watching similar cat kayaks like the Wave walk kayaks from the USA and others, as I suffer back pain paddling a normal kayak/canoe I needed something that I could sit in the normal position with feet down, so that idea of the cat kayak suited the bill. luckily I have had a fair bit of experience in building yachts, caravans etc, using ply and fiberglass. So like any building project it is just a matter if you have an idea sketch it down on paper and go for it. My business website has a page on building caravans if you are interested in viewing at "etcamperhire.com" from the web site you can see my other interest is in woodwork and making fine jewellery, storage boxes

yeah i've seen wavewalk and i like the design. I wanna build something like that. could you tell me how did you made your boat? what are the materials? is it stitch and glue and glassed? and what's that fin like thing that is on each side? nice caravans you've got there but I'm into small boats, kayak right now.

Yes have had a few inquiries for plans so hope in the next month sit down a draw up a detail plane of materials how to build and tips etc and make them available in a format that can be emailed for a small fee. if interested email me at geoffreyvardy@telstra.com
