Thanks for posting this vid, as it will teach so many people not to play with waves like this. the kayak is way to small for this kind of waves. Hitting waves always with paddling not stopping. Glad you guys made safe :)
WOW, brings back memories of my first season off shore kayak fishing in south Florida. Unfortunately, you have to pay your do's, getting humbled trying to pass the breakers, also landing on the beach, and the old losing expensive gear not having them leashed up, also no cheapo Walmart brand kayaks, get yourself a Hobie Revo 13 or the Hobie Ouback. Hope you pass your initiation to BTB KAYAK FISHING, it's the only way to fish. On my fifth year Kayak fishing in south Florida.
That looked a nightmare...I know with the surf you just have to paddle full on straight through it until your clear...with my Kayak ultra 4.7 I have a rod shoot and I can keep everything tucked away nicely just incase it does turn...maybe worth looking at 1 of those kayaks...a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.
Shouldn't underestimate the ocean. I would have looked for a better spot to launch after seeing those waves. Don't listen to the commenters dissing your kayak saying you need a better one, there are folks in Africa doing it with a wooden board and some empty water bottles. You just chose bad conditions and used poor kayak practices.
Where abouts did yous launch? Should've powered through those waves and lean back a little and don't ever stop and make sure your kayak is direct to the wave
+rotten flässkk i have an eagle talon 12 that handles up to 4ft. rolling surf just fine as a sit on top yak. its all in technique and knowing your limits. i fish for Spanish mack just past the fishing piers nearly every week. when in season of course.
+rotten flässkk -- Not sure why you are laughing, a sit on top kayak is ideal for ocean launches. A sit inside would get swamped with the first wave and you would be done.
idiot sit on tops were made for that. they are basically glorified surf boards. oh and with the exception of sea kayaks sit insides suck complete ass for surf. I live in fl where the surf is not as big as in cali yet I tried my buddy who swears by sit inside kayaks and got a shit load of water in the boat while launching.
When you do end up swimming, IMMEDIATELY get your body between the wave and Kayak, the kayak can then not slam into you and you can control it by holding (Tie a piece of parrachord onto the nose tip loop) the nose with one hand as a wave crash by. Don't ever paddle into the ocean with your rods up like that, tie shit down man!
Never ever stay between your kayak and the beach, always get on the ocean side. Always wear your life west. Secure those hooks and put some foam around your rods, so they will float. Attach everything to the kayak. You were doing pretty good, just need a new kayak and learn basic safety tricks. If you roll over, never try to flip the kayak back in the surf. First of all, your kayak should be on the shore side and you on the ocean side, then just tow kayak to the shore at 90 degree to the waves, flip it back in the calmer water, then hold either bow or stern and once your hit the sand, spin kayak around and drag it to the shore. now go and recover your gear. Remember, your well being in #1, then 2 nd the most important task it to get kayak to the beach, this prevents injuries of other people around, the last task is to recover your gear. Good luck.
Wow! Great job keeping it together despite the all the crap hitting the fan. Glad everyone was ok. Vids like this are very helpful to me since I'm new to yak fishing.
I winced when you went over then lined the kayak up sideways to the next wave, so it would be thrown nicely right at your face. Ouch. You only do that once!
Yep, that went very wrong indeed... it was very dangerous to stay in front of your boat with the waves coming in when you capsize! You could of broken your neck, I just learned to go under and let boat go and retrieve it further, watching this video.
Dude first off your going soo slow I thought u would of flipped along time agoo and your hitin waves at an angle .And y would u ever do that and not bungie your poles down flat .also that is a ridiculous place for those rod holders well I guess it takes a beating to learn sometimes .full speed next time and there are techniques to stay up if a wave takes u but it shouldn't if u hall ass
You don't leash your rods in the surf, it is a BAD idea. If you flip and a leash goes around your neck and next wave hits the kayak - your are dead. You need to either put something floatable around your pols or your put them in a long waterproof bag.
My advice for newbies would be - Don't ever stop paddling momentum is your friend and with out it your a sitting duck. - Always stay square to the wave on your way out this is just as important as momentum, as soon as your even the slightest angle to a decent wave it's going to tip you (a rudder can help with this) - If there's some decent swell with numerous sets coming in maybe look at going somewhere else, I've loaded all my gear onto the yak before dragged it down to the water only to think bugger this and pack it back into vehicle to go somewhere else. - Don't cheap out on the yak, If your serious about yak fishing buy a decent one, They have compartments and things for your rods and all your tackle, everything is nice and organized so you don't lose anything. I have had f ups just like most yak fisherman, You learn through experience 👍👍
wow that was epic failed. looks like you guys were just sitting there waiting for the swell to past. Granted it did look bad but you need to power through them. and never get behind a kayak when a wave is roaring in. I've seen people getting hit and suffer broken bones. hopefully all you guys were ok.
@@dalethebelldiver7740 Simple. Water is malleable, a kayak is not. Wave hits you while you're touching the kayak that 6" gap between you isn't going to damage you. Wave hits the kayak mass and accelerates it into your body parts that's 150lbs of kayak and gear + water pressure being held behind a rigid kayak smacking into you. Plenty of energy to break bones. Adding more weight to the kayak isn't going to help. As you don't have the buoyancy to play with as kayak capacity limits are low already. Just makes you more likely to sink it.
ok big offshore kayak noob here. if your gear (reels) get splashed by sea water is it a good idea to continue the fishing trip or will the salt fuck them up quick while off shore (I have the same spin fisher reel). now lets say I capsize like u did what is the best coarse of action to avoid the death of your reel
Well I’m an old time canoeist I seriously would not try that condition in those tubs. At least in a sit in kayak with spray deck you can use the paddle to slap support
I was gonna say its a bit small. I own a 16 footer and still get pushed around and I'm in florida where the surf is no where near as big. I cant imagin being on your kayak in surf like that
Definitely power through, so you can get to the next one before it swells and crashes. Did you notice how easy it was at the top of a swell, as opposed to going through it as it crashed? Also, put a thin line on all your gear, so you don't lose anything. It's ok if it falls out of the boat, but at least you won't lose anything. Glad you made it out ok and no one was hurt. Thanks for taking the trouble to make a video!
@@LoletaEric Right, better to just strap them down along the kayak, or instead of using a "thin line" use a paddle leash. They aren't expensive. A thin line would be no good, too dangerous.
@@LoletaEric I personally don't use them for my fishing rods. I strap my rods down along the side. Just a better option than a line as some leashes are pretty short and elastic so there isn't much room to get tangled. Kayak fishing 13 years, sea kayaking 10 years and I've been a sea kayak instructor for 4 years.
Thats a bummer mate, try leashing everything down that way you shouldn't lose too much, momentum forward is your friend always keep enough so you can punch through that white water, thanks for sharing and hope you have better luck next time!
Yeah bud, that was a bummer! I've never wiped out on entry, but got drilled a few times on exit. You definitely need to be able to paddle faster and never, never, NEVER, get in front of a loose kayak!!! That thing will take your head off!!!!
Jgn ikot sgt tuan kalau ombak besar jgn diredah...laut ni bahaye kuat sgt manggilnye....ambe dh serik dah....ambe org kelaut...laut ni kuat panggil...tk puas sokmo....
I feel your pain. Nothing worse than getting tipped over in a kayak by a big wave then trying to salvage your stuff while the next waves bowl you over.
your gear has to be all secured down when going thru the surf. Also you are to paddle hard thru the surf when it comes in not let it ride you other wise for sure your going for a swim. BTW, that kayak was a kiddie kayak and I hope you were wearing your pfd. Never go out without in on an keep it on 100% of the time. Cheers
I always find that when I see a wave approaching I freeze like a deer in the headlights until it breaks right in front of me instead of paddling like a madman to cross it before it breaks...SMH. Bruh should stay in the kiddie pool
I can hear the fear in your breathing. The ocean isn't a safe playground for us. It's a majestic beast. Learn to love and respect it. Glad you all got out okay.
you need to get at least a 12ft kayak longer paddle and a seat...save your blue kayak for a small lake...doesn't look like it tours well in open water...
